Title: My son points
Post by: BK_Adores_Chase on November 07, 2011, 08:16:35 pm
He used to be the biggest chatter box EVER and now he points and uses body language -- I'm wondering if it's because of his 6 month old sister.  He also started chewing on his hand, another thing his sister does.

I don't know the whole situation but here are some general bits of information.
That is quite common for an older sibling to copy a younger sibling actions. After all the younger sibling is getting almost all of your much needed time & attention now. It seems he is competing for your attention.  The way to deal with this is, of course, to give your son more attention. He still needs "me time" with Mommy. He is still working out and trying understand the new addition to the family.   How you do give this attention is important and it depends on the age difference between the 2 siblings.  A noted child psychologist, Dr. James Dobson, had written several books on this subject. A trip to the library may prove useful. Another book is called "Mommy & Me are having a baby" (or something like that). Even though this series is for the time before the birth, it could offer suggestion and give you some ideas. You also might consider consulting a family counselor who can look at your situation and developed a specific plan of action to guide you along the way.

I wish you all the best, and wish I could be there to help you.

BK_Adores_Chase, I agree your son may need some me & mom time as well but it could also be a way for your son to communicate with his new sister. It may be his way of cooping in order to accept this new person by going down to his sister's level of communication. It's probably just a phase, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Once, little sis starts talking, big bro will go back to being a chatter box just to out chatter his little sister. Keep an eye on them but at the same time go do your research on childhood behavior on line. Just to help you sort out what is the proper developmental behaviors of children at certain ages.
