it's not that my place smells bad, but i live with
a smoker and our cat. we keep the litter box tidy but
it still just seems... stale. i want to walk in the door and
be greeted with an inviting scent that is long-lasting...
any suggestions? what do YOU like to use to keep your house fresh?
-
There are different type of air freshener on the market, I use febreze it has a warm smell to it.
-
it is really hard to get that smoke smell out bc it actually permeates furniture and walls, etc.
i would use glade oil candles, sprays, etc.
-
Some cat litters are better than others at keeping it from smelling. We use tidy cats and have no problems.
As for smoking.....don't smoke inside maybe?.... :dontknow: Like someone else mentioned, it'll get into the carpet and walls and everywhere; using other scents just covers it up.
My sister smokes and they have a cat; she's always smoked outside. So the house smells fresh and clean all the time.
-
I have the automatic sprays, candles. You should use a humidifier and baking soda in the cat box.
-
i love candles i think burning candles will make a house smell great.

- Make them smoke outside as they should to be anyway.
- Litter Robot : http://www.litter-robot.com/ (http://www.litter-robot.com/)
- Use oust.
- If you have your laundry room inside use allot of fabric softener.
- Clean your walls and wet vac the whole house.
- Potpourri.
- Scented candles
- Glade

At this time of year I put a pot of water on low on the stove. Slice up an apple and an orange to put in to simmer. Add some cloves (not too many) and wait for the great smells. Don't forget to turn off the stove if you leave the house or go to bed. :)

I love Mr. Clean or even the cheap knock-off. I pour it in vases and along the baseboard on the carpet. When my son was small, I told a friend that he had peed on a fabric couch and how could I get rid of the odor. She said wipe it with Mr. Clean. It worked and I've used it ever since. It has a lemon scent.

clean it, and then keep a nice smelling candle going...old yankeehas the best candles
-
My husband smokes and we have 3 cats. To keep our house smelling good, I clean the cat boxes every morning using clumping cat liter. I spray with Febreze air freshener and also spray the furniture with Febreze fabric spray. I love burning candles so they are constantly burning with different scents- whatever I am in the mood for.
-
keep the litter clean and smoke outside or only in one room . air freshners and candles
-
Clean it. Make the smoker smoke outside, you're probably smelling the nicotine all over the place, and always have a spray. One that smells nice.
-
great suggestions!
i've never tried the stove simmering-pot thing, but
i definitely will. glade has some great coupons out
right now and i've been wanting to try their oil candles,
so maybe i'll do that too. baking soda in the cat litter - CHECK
the "litter robot" thing looks cool too! too bad it's way
out of my price range, lol.
i've been trying to get the smoker to quit for awhile, sigh.

I am a smoker but I smoke outside because I want my house to smell fresh/not because somebody makes me! You don't have to waste electricity or gas by lighting the stove to boil something that smells nice. Try PINE-SOL the original/not a knock off. Pour it in a small pot or bowl and place it in the center of the house. I have been doing this a while. Everyone that comes to my house thinks I had just spent all day mopping floors; when, actually, I hadn't even taken time to make my bed! :dontknow:
-
Like the others have said, make them smoke outside, you will have to scrub your whole house from top to bottom cleaning the walls, ceiling, carpets, and all the furniture. you will find that depending how long you have smoked inside. that the smoke leaves the yellow film on everything. Pine sol works well for covering the smell. 409 or greased lightning for getting rid of the film.. as for the cat liter just clean it throughout the day, also using the clumping liter with odor control helps..

I like to use oil candles

i like to use candles but now that i have two little ones, i use spray air fresheners or the air wick freshmatics

DO NOT USE PLUG-INS, GLADE THOSE HAVE formaldehyde IN THEM WHICH IS A CARCINOGEN WHICH IS A CANCER CAUSING AGENT. DO NOT USE
-
febreze

I don't live with any smokers or inside animals, but the people that lived here before us did. I think they had 5 animals inside and even after deep cleaning the house top to bottom it still smells at times. It does help to keep candles going. I like using the burners that melt the candles instead of regular burning. Also, Scentsy has really nice things in all sorts of different fragrances. I love changing them out with the seasons. If you haven't heard of the Scentsy products, check them out at http://scentsy.net/ ;D

wax melts work the best i think. or try baking something sweet that has a strong smell to it

thanks alot, made me want to bake. so made an apple pie. mmmmmmm

The best way I know to make my house smell good is by baking or slow cooking something.Cookies, applesauce or beef stew work best for me.
-
I use glade oil candles and I don't let anyone smoke in my house anymore.
-
I have a GREAT suggestion. Home depot has this stuff called Odoban- I got the lavender scented stuff. You'll have to dillute it, but you spray your stuff and it helps remove the odor from things; I think it works GREAT. Its about $10.00 for a bottle of it, but it will last quite a long time b/c you dillute it down. Good luck!!!

I like the automatic sprays like airwick or glade. I think that the ones with cinnamon smell the best!

My ex wouldn't quit lol so I gave up on that. BUT I did get him to smoke outside at least ! :D

I am not sure about this ingredient claim however I will say that using any oil based air fresheners is VERY harmful. You breath in the oils and it coats the cilia along your air passages. It can cause asthma, bronchitis, phenomena and has been known to kill some people and small pets!
-
I usually have candles around my house or glade plug ins
-
I love the new ideas. I have a cat and dog and boys. When the boys sweat they stink like fried onions. I think I will get the pinesol. ;D

I do this and it is the most marvelous, luscious, delicious scent that makes you want to dance through the house. I wouldn't do this for just anyone but you are special so try this. For strong scents (unpleasant scents) use three cinnamon sticks and 1/4 cup of cloves and 3/4 of a quart of water simmer on the stove using medium heat. the scent will intoxicate you and this is the perfect time for it. Enjoy!

can you do this in a ceramic candle warmer too, or
does the stove work better for carrying the scent?
i'm just afraid of leaving the stove on for long periods
of time.

Agree, however, I would opt for things like essential oils such as Lavender, Germanium, Jasmine, Lilly of The Valley, and all natural scents.
The other mainstream things are chemically laden, and really won't do your health much good.
I especially agree with making people smoke outside.
There is NO SMOKING allowed in our house, and we prefer that smokers don't even come over, because the smell is still on them, and they will still bring the smell into the house.
Thankfully, none of our friends smoke, and we don't usually have company over anyway.
We use our Rainbow vac and a diffuser to put the essential oils in.
Irobot Roomba 562 Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot is really good too.

Is anyone using soy tarts? How are they working? I bought a batch by mistake and need to get a warmer for them now. Are you using the electric burner or a burner that just uses a tea candle?
-
There's a deodorizing air freshner by Arm & Hammer that I SWEAR BY. It's industrial strength stuff that they use in hotels and unlike Febreeze it actually kills all the bad smells without leaving some funky smell of its own behind. I highly recommend it!
-
I suggest an air ionizer. Mine works great at eliminating odors.
-
I have found that the airwick 'cone' deodourizing variety is great for eliminating cat box odors.
Another odour eliminator is branches of eucolyptous. These only eliminate odour. To get a fresh or fragrant smell I also use scented air fresheners.
-
No candles, please! There is too much risk of fire. Lysol spray is a disinfectant and odor control then I spray Glade or Renuzit.
-
Open all windows and let the fresh fall clean air in to blow all the stale air out while you clean house.
-
My husband smokes, but he goes outside mostley, but at night he stay in an I just use glade air fresher and my house smells good.
-
I usually use candles and scented oils from Bath and Body Works. Those really work wonders in the house....:)
-
pine sol and air fresheners
-
You can use an air purifier.
-
Try using Glade Plugins, and a fruit scented disinfectant cleaner when cleaning.
-
AirWick Freshmatic is pretty good.

That is the key to making any *bleep* stained house smelling wonderful.
