Title: Did you do your taxes yet ?

I haven't done my taxes yet still have to gather all the information I need. Just hope I don't have to pay. Didn't have to last year, hope we get lucky again.

I prepare paperwork in Dec & as soon as all the needed items come in mail or email, I send the package out to be processed. Not in a hurry for refund/bill to IRS, however, I don't like to put off things in case I forget.

Post by: jwallbank on February 11, 2012, 09:49:22 am: I did them on 2/1. Filed my federal online and am expecting a small refund. I am holding on to my State because I owe them a small amount. Once I get my Federal I can make a check out to state. It is pretty much a push this year. I retired in 2010 and this is the first year I don't have any Income except for retirement. I guess I did a pretty good job on figuring what I will owe because I didn't get much of a refund and don't owe much to state.

So I have to go pick up some forms at the library and do the state taxes manually.

It depends on your dependants and your age. I do tax for family and friends My son becasue he is under 25 he can't get the earned income credit you have to be 25 or have children and he doesn't qualify for any which is a bummer. If you already did your taxes you should know what your getting back or owe.

They claim I didn't send supporting evidence for what I was claiming. I send them my response and all supporting evidence today and hopefully I'll get my money soon :). Hope this only happened to me and not anybody else. Getting audited for no reason is just annoying.

The program itself was easy enough for Federal taxes, but I felt it got very complicated when it came to filing the state tax return. I'm still not 100% convinced we did it right, but we'll see. We're getting a teensie tiny amount back from both state and federal... not much but it's better than having to pay :)

This year is my first year into retirement so, I did not have much income and it took me all of about 2-3 hours to complete. I have not received my return yet, but I figure I hit the log jam of everyone filing in the beginning of Feb. I normally filed between 3/15 - 4/7 of the year and never had to wait this long. I normally got my return between 3 - 10 days. It has been 15 days already. I hope they aren't looking at them close for an audit, not that I have anything to hide!! I have been doing my own taxes since 1988 and Tax service before that, never been audited.

I know that money will look good but I always want something stored for later, like FusionCash. Some back up money for when I get crazy spending my tax money!

My date with my "tax lady" will be in mid-March and I am still behind in gathering all of those pieces of papers that never seem to be in one place to prove to IRS that I am legit with all of my deductions. OUCH! What a head ache. I keep saying "next year" I will be more up to date with everything. Ha ha. Where does all the time go these days? Yet, my cut-off date is coming soon, so instead of talking about it, I am rushing around looking all over for everything necessary so I can have it ready by my "taxing date".

Although he also has to do his aunties, ( who will be 99 this year). The nursing home has gone through everything she had in the last 3 years, so we know she isn't going to have to pay any. If we hadn't had to sell some stock this year we wouldn't even file for her. What a crock.

Post by: kapeh12 on March 01, 2012, 07:24:26 am: Did mine a couple weeks ago using TaxAct online. I usually do mine sooner, but it took longer to receive some charity receipts from end-of-year donations I made.

I was surprised, this year between fed and state, my taxes came to a wash. I owed on the federal, but the state refund covered all but maybe $30. I realized I owed more than expected on the federal because I forgot to recalculate my allowances at work. Made sure I did that right away this year! I haven't changed my state allowances as that requires mailing in paperwork which I don't want to bother with. The federal ones can be changed online which is why I only monkey around with those.

Don't forget to double check your allowances so you're not surprised next year!
