Title: copying text in a post
Post by: dmahoney on February 19, 2012, 12:01:29 pm
How the heck do you do that?  :dontknow:       Copy text from one persons post to yours so you cans make a reply to what they said. Thanks ahead of time for your answers! :thumbsup:

Hi,
I think you select the entire post and then click copy.

Look in the upper-right hand corner of the post and click on "Quote". Their post will then show up in your new reply, but make sure you start your post after the last "quote" tag.

@dmahoney.....

I don't know how it didn't work but here's what you do......

First, click on "Quote" in the upper right-hand corner of the person's post you want to respond to:
(http://i44.tinypic.com/4r41.jpg)

Then start your reply AFTER the last [/quote] tag like this:

If you write your reply somewhere within the quote tags of the post you're responding to, it will end up within the green box of THEIR post (see my next post for an example).

Hope this helps!

See, if I reply to you and insert my response within the "quote" tags, then my reply ends up inside the quoted text (green) box. That makes it harder for others to find your response (it probably won't be red like this).

Ice Kitty, that's a great tutorial. One more little tip: if you only want to quote part of someone's post, follow the instructions above, but delete whatever you don't want included in the quote, so you're left with only the part you want. Just make sure you don't delete either of the "quote" tags!

Impressive, Icekitty! You did a great job on the example. How did you do that?

@gamerpeeps......

Thank you! Just opened up a separate tab so that I could use one for taking a screen shot and the other for the actual reply. Then I just put the screen shots into MS Paint to edit (add the arrows), saved as jpegs and then used tinypic.com for generating the html code to insert into my reply.

Hitting quote is what you meant, right?

gamerpeeps asked me how I did the little mini tutorial above and I was just describing how I did it. The mini tutorial was for dmahoney who is having trouble with the "Quote" function. But yes, that is what is being discussed here.  :)

Thanks IceKitty, I have been wondering about that too.  I love that about this site, if you ask a question someone will usually answer right away with a good answer!

@plennis:

I know this is taking the thread a bit off topic, sorry about that.
plennis, could you please NOT use the light colors in your posts! I know you must be enjoying the function because you use it a lot, but it is [almost] impossible to read anything you write! Just a friendly heads up. ;)

If you hit quote their text is already on that post, but then you highlight their text and delete if you only want your response to show.
