what is the difference between a mp3 player and a mp4 player???

Mp4 player is the latest version of mp3 player. MP4 format is compatible with a wide variety of media formats.

mp4's are definitely much better quality than standard mp3's. However, audio-only really have an extension of .m4a while .mp4 is more designated with MPEG-4 videos. :)
As for which is better as a player, I would most definitely choose the mp4 player. It still plays mp3's, which are definitely more widely used, but you have that little bit extra. Myself, I have a Zune *got it for free* so I do have mp4 functionality. However, if you are just wanting something that you can use to listen to music, any standard mp3 player should work just fine. From what I've seen, mp4 players seem to be a little more costly.
Not to mention, there are hundreds of free m4a to mp3 converters out there, just in case you do come across one.

Both of them are rellitively useless in my opinion.
