I notice that it is very hard to get any referrals. What would you suggest is the best way to go about getting them? how can you get lots of them?
-
I advertise on facebook and myspace. I also find some free classified ad sites. Make sure you find some local ones too.
-
1. Tell all the people you know who may be interested about the site
2. Send an e-mail to your contacts
3. Post your referral link on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and other social networks. Also make a page and a group on Facebook about earning money online and place the link there!
4. Make Youtube videos and include the link in the description box.
5. Write an article at article directories just like this one!
6. Make a blog and put your link there!
7. Put the link on your website!
8. Exchange referrals!
9. Advertise!

It probably didn't hurt to have a wealthy father to bail him out when his net worth plunged to negative $300 million either ...

Talk to someone who HAS lots of referrals and they will tell you the best way is to talk to lots of people.
Advertising seldom works :bs:

Isn't advertising essentially a means of talking to lots of people by presenting a product or service to as wide an audience as possible?

We could get sidetracked by semantics here, but not in my opinion. Advertising is placing sales copy in front of someone's eyes that may or may not be interested in what you are offering. In the case of Internet Advertising, it's predominantly the latter. When I say "talk to people" I am suggesting creating a contact and cultivating it into a relationship of some sort before you hit them with your sales pitch. It's true that if you are skilled enough this could be automated and used to advertise with, but few people online are at that level.

True, although that wasn't my intent. I was simply considering that in order to cultivate contacts/people, it would be necessary to to "talk" to lots of people, (which is, essentially, advertising). I do understand that once those people/contacts are contacted, that it's possible to cultivate some of them into referrals.

While the automated concept may be possible, it is, as you say, still advertising. No matter, if the objective is to obtain referrals then those being referred would have to become aware of a referrer somehow.

@dansazz - Here's how I advertise...it may work for you...it may not. I went to Vistaprint and ordered the *free business cards with my link on them. I went out to places like the mall and talked to people. After seeing if they were interested in making money, I'd give them my business card which also has my contact phone number and email address. I'm not saying that's the best way for everyone...but it's a rather good way for me to get people into the business.
*Free - you don't pay anything for the business cards themselves but do pay for the postage which is around $3-$8 varying on your state (where you live).

Generally the best way is to advertise on the internet. Friends are also a good way to get referrals too.
-
Keep in mind, there are MILLIONS of other people using the same old beat to death methods to advertise on the Internet and most of them are not doing any better than you are. Sometimes you need to think outside the box!
Come up with a fresh approach that solves a problem for other people, NOT yourself.
Then all that remains is to get it in front of the right noses and it will be like waving a tissue in front of a vacuum hose . . . . . SLURP!

Most people are skeptical, don't want to try new things and I am not a smooth talker.

Being a smooth talker or silver tongued devil is nothing but a myth.
What you are thinking of is what it takes to be a used car salesman. How smooth do you need to talk when you tell a friend about a great burger you had or recommend a terrific movie you saw? Sharing what puts a few extra bucks in your pocket (so you can afford that burger) is NOT salesmanship, it's being a good friend. Seriously, if you change your attitude it will make a HUGE difference in your success.
