There is an organization called St Jude's "Ranch for Children where I send my cards.  Send only the front of the card with nothing written on the back (inside).  The children use them to make new cards and sell them.     http://www.stjudesranch.org/

If the card has a thoughtful note in it and a date, I would keep it as a memory or just because.  :)
Otherwise, if it only says "Happy birthday _____! Have a good one. Love, _____" than I'd trash it

I normally don't keep cards long after I recieve them.  I enjoy them for awhile then usually pitch them in recycle bin.
