Title: Looking for full-time work but need advice
Post by: rmendoza1 on August 14, 2012, 01:35:06 pm
I've been a stay-at-home mom for about 18 months. I worked for about two weeks as a cashier, but I don't have any other experience. I've only done odd jobs like cleaning houses and helping people get to the grocery store. What should I do to make myself more appealing to employers?

Get more experience, you can also possibly apply for a pellgrant and get some certification somewhere in an area of interest for free. There are several online colleges. Also when you walk in with a winning attitude employers pick up on that, a friendly smile goes a long way, and if you have confidence in yourself and employer will have the confidence it takes to trust in you for the job.

Is there anywhere you can volunteer that would give you some experience and/or references?

You should try to capitalize on the actual work experience you have but being at home and watching your children or keeping a schedule and staying organized at home can be experience you can use in a lot of jobs. Give it some thought and look up some interview skills and questions they might ask. I'm sure you could find some info online about how to use your at home experience also. Good luck!

I think you would make a good model, but if you just want to make an impression my advice would be to volunteer at either habitat for humanity, or salvation army, In just a few hours of volunteer work you can get many needed skills for the work force as well as volunteer work just looks good to employers!!!  hope this helps

make sure you are dressed nicely, they will notice it. have your resume completed and nicely typed. use proper grammer and a great big smile. besure to look up any company you are going to apply to so you are informed about them, know why you are there and what you can do for them. go in as if they need you. :)i wish you the very best of luck :)

In the past I worked for several for profit school the where the short term ones, but I had friends who attended the degree earning ones. Do your research. Make a list of skills you want to develop short term to market to employers. Some of the skills you are using now are marketable. If they are of a so called high level. Try temporary agencies for more skills, jobs and advice. Check you local library for good reading on the subject, to read in your down time. Okay no hate, but I learned from a mentor to cut off the tv, during times of serious income planning, but people use the tv to unwind.
