Title: When did music "die" for you ?
Post by: eonprim on August 14, 2012, 05:36:56 pm
From my experience everyone thinks their music was great from their youth; however, once we reach a certain age, new music just doesn't seem to resonate anymore.  Is it just me or does everyone experience this "golden age" of music idea?

It's sad when I listen to modern music and say/think, "this just sounds like noise, not music".

Whenever Nickleback arrived on the scene  :P.

Honestly though, I'm not quite sure.  Probably when numetal really started to take off.  I'm ashamed to admit I used to like Limp Bizkit.

Probably around 2005 is when I stopped bothering to go out of my way to find music.  It just isn't really worth the money they want to charge, and to me it sounds the same as stuff they've been producing over the last 20 or so years anyway.  I haven't seen a dramatic change like the 1920's through 1990's had in styles of music each decade.  Seems more like they stopped becoming original in the music and movie industry and just reboot everything.

To be honest,I think it mostly started when I was a teen.I was never into Grunge and Hip Hop,which became popular then. But I think there are a few good bands that come out every decade. You just have to look a bit to find them.lol

Don't feel too ashamed, I played my Three Dollar Bill Yall cd until it turned to dust... I enjoyed most music pre-2000

It probably went on life support for me when I stopped listening to commercial radio so much.  These days I listen to a lot of classical music on public radio--but I have some Alice in Chains and Kid Rock and such nestled away in my mp3.

I still love music, but I don't listen to it as much as I did when I was a teenager.  I just got tired of the repetition of listening to the radio, and didn't want to invest the time trying to find new music that I liked online.

1965 1966 1967 1968....those years can never be matched again how good the music was then.

when you put it that way, mainstream music "died"
for me around age 16?

i enjoy lesser known/underground music. it's generally
less shitty/poppy. i also like folksy, oldies, or electronica
types of music.

Who says that new music has to resonate with us? Doesn't with me but I still love music in and of itself.  Always have, always will.

I still like to hear new music. There are certain genres I don't care for, but it's always been that way. "heavy" rap or metal don't do it for me, but I enjoy pop and rock!

Well it never died...it just turned into an anoying teenager lol. We old folks complain the music just talks about music, sex, and drugs...which is exactly what most of the older stuff talks about too. Just in a more inteligent sounding maner. If I had to pinpoint a time...94' (and that is pushing it)

Music has not died for me but I do have to search to find music I like on the radio harder.

So much of it is just noise with no music to it.  I'll just stick with Country because I can understand it and there's always a melody/beat.

Music has always been an integral part of my life. However, I never really listen to "new music". I have no tolerance for most of the bile that these "artists" are spewing forth. I've never listened to commercial radio because there is no station that suits my musical palette. I guess the day the music "died" for me was when we entered the 2000's. Although, I have discovered some new underground artists that are absolutely phenomenal. They'll probably never make it big because they're so different from what the "mainstream" wants.  :BangHead:

Music hasn't "died" for me yet.  I have such a wide range of musical loves from classical, to big band, to "oldies", to classic, to alternative, to pop, jazz, blues, hip hop, electronica, etc - that I never get bored and am constantly finding new music I enjoy.  I'm big into figure skating and dance, so I'm always exposed to new music and am often amused when I hear another remake of a song come out on the radio and educate the youngin's that the song is not "new" and list the other artists who remade them - sometimes back to the 50's.  I find it fun!

I do have certain music eras that take me back to various points in my life - like 60's/70's was growing up, 80's was high school, 90's-2000 was college/ballroom years, 2000+ figure skating, 30's-60's is my trivia team (best music played on student radio!), etc.  I'm constantly making new music memories as I go through life.

I have found that "popular" music goes in cycles for me - there may be a couple years where I don't like anything out there, but then there comes a wave of artists that bring back some fun tunes I can get into.  During the music "droughts" I tend to listen to my CDs more than the radio, but eventually I start finding new music again.

Music doesn't have to die for you. Just listen to what you like the most whether it's from now or from then. As long as you enjoy it.

Music has never really died for me, I listen to new music and old music alike. There's only one golden rule that will never ever be broken, avoid everything Rap and Justin Bieber till the end of days. Well, now that I think about it, not even after the end of days. I guess never ever ever period.

I love music but barely listen to it anymore. I stopped listening to the radio around 18 years old. I'm 32 now. When image became everything, that's when it "died". I put "died" in quotes because it's not that good music is gone, it's still there, the problem is just that it's not always right there. You have to search for it. Mainstream always had crappy music but it was mixed in with the good. Now it's mainly coal and an extremely rare diamond pops out every once in a while. I'll never give up on music, I just don't feel like listening right now. I know I'll go back again.

Well, I'm 60 years old.  The late 60s, the 70s and some of the 80s were the best, especially the 70s.

Music hasn't died for me! Well, I did stop listening to the radio/top 40 hits as often nowadays, since around 2007 when I realized all the songs were about sex, drugs, and other stuff like that. But that just led me to find my music elsewhere (i.e Youtube, friends)

It hasn't died for me yet, but I'm not impressed by a lot of songs these days.  To me, it feels like music has become much more explicit recently, sex being the biggest explicitly stated thing but drugs and alcohol getting in there as well.  It's not the first time I've heard it, but it's in almost EVERYTHING.

I mean, there was a song that was about this kid finding his dads gun and he's gonna shoot people.  And this song was on the radio all the time.  Another that bugs me recently is this song where this girl breaks up with her boyfriend thinking he'll be all sad and instead he's dating someone else and she now wants him back.  There were probably songs like this before, but I'm amazed how often I hear this now.

Music has never died for me, I enjoy listening to oldies, as well as country and  pop today.  I guess I'm not really up on RAP much but will listen to it when its on the radio.

Music is still a great pic me up for me and also a good way to get in the mood when its that special moment. I also play music when I clean our house because it just goes by faster it seems. I like oldies mostly but i do listen to jazz and rnb.  :D

I have always loved music and still do at 64 years of age.  I still love the music from the 60s, 70s and 80s especially.  I like all kinds of music; rock, country, etc. but not rap!  lol  I enjoy a lot of the music thats on the radio now too but I don't get to listen to the radio much these days since I keep 3 of my grandkids so their parents don't have to pay for childcare.   My youngest (almost 18 mos) loves it when I turn the on music on rare occasions and we dance around the house.  Hopefully she will grow up with her grandma's love of music.

Probably in the late 70's or early 80's. When hard rock came out, where they started doing some strange things like breaking their instruments on stage and having snakes curled around their necks. This was not music, this was more of a shock value. Then it seemed to have gone down hill ever since.
