Title: Is school a 4 letter word?
Post by: sherryinutah on August 17, 2012, 06:30:17 am
When I was young I really disliked school.  I had a problem with social anxiety, ADD and I was right brain dominant.  I struggled academically and I still wonder how I managed to graduate from high school.  Back then, school really was a 4 letter word, for me.

Now I have an opportunity to go back at the age of 52.

This time I'm excited.  I'll be learning graphic design, Photoshop, etc.

This time I'll be able to "have" school on my terms.  I can use my creativity and learn something that would be a natural fit for me.

How do you feel about school?

Would you be willing to go back?

If so, what would you study?

I take it, you didn't like school when you were growing up.
*********************
There is a 4 letter word put in front of "school" sometimes; "home" school.

I graduated from college two months ago. I am not likely willing to go back.

When I was in school, I absolutely despised it. I was in honors and advanced placement classes which I hated. I was a creative child and I was forced into an academic environment instead of one where my art can thrive. I ended up dropping out at 17 and getting my GED, (I was 4 questions from a perfect score). I studied Journalism for a year in community college, but realized it wasn't for me. I then went to a university received my BA in Psychology. I have yet to find a job with it for someone like me (I now know my appearance matters which is something I'm not willing to compromise) which is why I changed my career choice. I'm going to Cosmetology school right now in a year, I'll move on to Esthetics school, then I'll move onto a school that focuses on makeup artistry, then on to special effects school.
Makeup is something that I've always been passionate about and instead of wasting my life doing what other people "expected" me to do, I'm following my dream. :)

I really liked school, although i went to 8 in 12 years and spent the last 3 at one school. My dad was logger. It was hard, we had moved from N.M. to ohio and i hated it, except for meeting new classmates. I even went to summer school as there was nothing to do in the country. Never was so glad to come home to the wide open skys.

I didn't really like school, but I did graduate.  I don't have any plans to go back.  If I did,  it would have to be for something really specific, maybe like a vo-tech class.

Because of my car accident when I was eight, I've learned of fear social outings/functions like schools. When I came to in the
hospital, my memories of 8 yrs was wipe out clean. I was like a new born walking into 2nd grade. I was Humiliated in front of my peers as I was escorted out of the 2nd grade room! So, going to school hell! Had to work 3x's harder then other's in college! Took me longer to graduate but I did it! I recently learned that my IQ was near genius b4 the accident, great now they tell me this. As for going back to school, NO WAY! If I have to  I'll take courses online!

I don't think any student who "have" to go to school likes it.  But if you are an Adult, it's more fun because you make the decision to go to school or back to school.  I have always liked school, so it was never a problem for me.

You seem to be mixing up your idioms here. In order for school to be dubbed a "four letter word", it actually has to be a four letter word. Otherwise the phrase doesn't make whole lot of sense. ;)

That is a salient point, even if someone spelled it as "scol".

I was shy when I was in school so I hung out with my little group of friends. I took typing and accounting classes, not that any of that has done me any good after school. Never went to college then, but now that I am 46 I am going back to school for Medical Administrative Associate. The things that I am learning is so different from when I was in school. But I am doing pretty good so far.

I think school is what you make of it. I went back and got my masters a couple of years ago and it wasn't bad at all

If by four letter word you mean "suck" then yes, yes it is. I never liked school, I had a difficult time with everything. For some reason, I generally had good marks (and no, I didn't cheat to get them) but I was just terrible at everything. I'm even worse now and am currently doing poorly in my studies, though once again my marks would suggest otherwise. Good marks don't amount to anything when you're complete rubbish when it really counts. I'm baffled and frustrated, it really sucks.
