My daughter has a learning disability and is really struggling at school. My husband and I have decided to do an at-home online school. My mother is very defensive about my daughter's disabilty so she is very unhappy with me. I feel it will give my daughter more one on one time to help with her grades. Am I really that bad of a mother for taking her out of public school? :'(

I am not sure about home school because I do not know that much about it. It does not make you a bad mother you did what you thought was best for your child.

It's your child. If you feel that her special needs weren't being met at a public school and that the online program gives her more attention, that is entirely your choice.

I think that you are a very good mom and you know your child best. Unfortunately, doing the best for our children sometimes means making unpopular decisions. I highly respect parents who homeschool. My husband's family has negative views toward homeschooling.

Yours sounds like a special case, but for most kids, regular school is the better option. Not just for the social aspect, but because learning in a classroom environment usually offers more variety. If you mix school with home, it can be harder for them to focus.

It's a case-by-case basis. For instance if you live in a dangerously rough neighborhood, home-schooling would probably be more ideal. However in your case, is there any chance you could have her do both to cover both sides of the issue?

I would say if they are really struggling at school and it is making everything hard for them there than I would definitely consider home school. I just like the fact that they are with friends when they go to public school.

My thing is this do that child graduate like all others even though they have never went to public school.

It really depends on each individual case. Some people are self motivated enough to be able to learn on their own. Others need that extra motivation and structure of being in a classroom environment. The type of learning disability also determines what is best. Some types just require a little extra time to do things. Others require help from a professional to be able to be sucessful

I say if the parent has a college degree and does their best to socialize the kid, then it's ok.

I agree. I am sure you and your husband know your daughter and what would be best for her more than any other person. Ultimately the choice is your husbands and yours to make when it comes to deciding what is best for your child and mother should not be involved in that decision.
All three of my children chose to home school and have done very well with it. My MIL from my first marriage was very upset with me at first and even considered trying to gain custody of my daughter because she thought I was committing a crime by homeschooling...lol. Eventually she got over it after she and other family members took a closer look at the advantages of homeschooling.
It has not always been an easy road. There are pros and cons with it like anything else but in comparison to the public school system today, it is far superior imo. I don't regret our choice for a minute and I don't think you will either.

If a person is good and structured with homeschooling great, but if they are not going to stick with it nothing would be gained. I know a lot of homeschooled children and they are usually so far ahead of the kids in schools. Granted the homeschool children need some form of outlet with children of their own age, so put them in clubs like 4-h, , church groups and others.

I am for home schooling 100% so many parents are doing it and I know in my area they have field trips together parents take turns teaching different subjects that other parents might not be so strong in lots of interaction I know if I had school age children they would not be in public schools
