The iron token in the game of Monopoly will be replaced with a cat. What do you think about this? Do you think in many years, people will pay a lot of money for the iron?

Monopoly: Iron will be retired: Now they will use a Cat Instead in the Monopoly game since time has change.
-
kind of sad
-
Its sad why change it? We play monopoly all the time but I don't like the new versions they have out at all
-
I think they should have picked the diamond ring as their new token. That would have been cool.
-
I never cared much for the iron anyway - I like the change to a cat.
-
It doesn't matter to me because I have several monopoly games.
-
I always knew something was wrong with that iron, never could get my shirts pressed with it. :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:
-
WOW thats really gonna be different

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My kids were talking about this the other day, that the iron was replaced with a cat and now the dog will chase the cat around the board. lol
I kinda liked the iron. My mom always chose that when I was growing up.
-
The iron was always my least favorite piece, but although sad change is good.
-
It's probably a move to increase sales in the game by replacing the iron with the :cat: .
-
Wow I usually do not like change at all but i really dont care that much honestly i have a few versions so ill keep the iron as a memory =)
-
I say good rittens!!! In all my years of playing Monopoly, I don't think I was ever the iron....does Monopoly still have the thimble?? thats worse then the iron...lol
-
I was never emotionally attached to the iron. The next improvement they could make is to shorten the game so it can be played in less than 2 hours. Most of us have other things to do beside "scoot" a cat around on the board.
-
Actually I think the cat would be better. I would prefer to be the cat then the iron. When I played monopoly when I was younger, I tried to always get the dog. That is my favorite token.
The next is the race car.
-
Think the iron should have stayed there, it was original, I understand why the cat made it, just because 1/2 or more of the world loves cats. But if you are going to change it.. why not change them all.. I would have voted for the Helicopter, or the ring, or the guitar.. but the cat won.. so be it.. :dontknow:
-
They should replace the iron with an Ipad. :)

A lot of people don't even iron anymore. I try to make it a rare occasion! I am glad they choose a cat instead of some of the other choices they had. Now the dog can chase the cat or vice-versa. I don't have a game anymore, but remember playing it when I was a kid. I fee like our economy is the "Go to Jail" card, because we cannot collect our $200. Prices are just going too far up!

That really steams me.

Its been a while since I've even played but I do agree that I like the classic board better then the new ones. But to me the iron always seemed kinda flimsy handle wise that is. So maybe replaceing it is for the best. I think that it should be something different then a cat though. A cat is just to simular to a dog no matter how it is done and little ones playing with their parents may get confused.
-
There have been other changes since the game first came out. It doesn't bother me that the iron is gone. If you are looking for an evening of entertainment, this game will do that. But if looking for a quick game, this is not the one!
-
I was shock to here of that, but change is always good. Do anyone really know why it had to retire; they just couldn't add the Cat piece? This is a game that needs to be played by all kids, so that they can learn about banking and real estate.
-
I think they should leave the game as it is!! You cant go and start changing the pieces on us!!!

As you can see below, this is not the first time tokens have been retired.
Tokens
All twelve tokens from the U.S. Deluxe Edition Monopoly.
Each player is represented by a small metal token that is moved around the edge of the board according to the roll of two dice. The number of tokens and the tokens themselves have changed over the history of the game, with many appearing in special editions only, and some available with non-game purchases. As of 2013, eight tokens are included in standard edition games, including:
Wheelbarrow (1937b edition)
Battleship
Racecar
Thimble
Old-style shoe (or boot)
Scottie dog
Top hat
Cat (2013-onwards)
Previous tokens retired in the 1950s (replaced by the dog, man on horseback, and wheelbarrow):
Lantern
Purse
Rocking horse
Other retired tokens:
Sack of money (1999–2007 editions; won a contest over a piggy bank and biplane)
Man on horseback
Iron (1935-2013 editions)
Howitzer, better known as a cannon
-
I kinda liked the iron. A little sad to see it go. Interesting the list of tokens above. I don't recall a battleship in the edition I have (inherited the family board). Now I'll have to go look. ;D
If I recall, the favorite tokens growing up was the dog, race car, wheelbarrow, iron and thimble.
-
Farewell litte iron...I always liked the dog.
-
yeah for a cat!!!! :dog:
-
I believe in keeping stuff original

I kinda like the pieces from the original game but, I think the cat will be a cute change for the iron. Anyway, it really doesn't matter what we think cause the company will do what it wants no matter!!
-
The iron was my guess on what piece would be retired. Kind of sad to see it go, but the cat is CUTE!

I think the original Monopoly in perfect condition right now goes for quite a bit of money. Because they have made so many "special" boards in the last few years the original is one of a kind. If you have the first Monopoly fully in tact with the iron and all other pieces for sure it will be worth more. Although since there are tons of people all around the world still with originals I doubt it will be worth a good amount of money. On another note i'd rather the iron. I don't like cats personally. If they wanted a change why not just add something or chose something completely "new". There is already a "dog" in the game so what is so different about having a "cat" there. I would have rather a globe on a base of course. It signifies all the world considering it is a universal game. But that is just me and the "cat" is already being circulated, lol.
-
Makes me don't wanna buy the dam thing ><
-
never was the iron like race car or ship no big deal for me.
-
The cat would not have been my first choice but it could be worse. I have always used the man on the horse or the shoe.
Thanks jorhea for the history!
-
not sure but i will miss the iron
-
Who knows if people will pay a lot of money for the iron - its possible. It will be considered a collectors item I am sure because there are certainly people who love monopoly so much they already collect monopoly "stuff" lol. Maybe I better run out and buy some games that are left with irons in them.
-
what happens when you play the animated monopoly when you the dog and the cat lands near it this is just strange we don't need to change a 100 year old game
