No, it is not fair.  Nobody expects their man (or woman) to become incarcerated, and they charge so much that I started refusing the calls,.  My ex-stepson went to jail, called his girlfriend at my apartment, and it cost $125.00.  She became upset with me because I said it's not that much love in the world.  He would have stayed out of jail if he loved you that much. ???

I know what its like to have a loved one in jail and the costs to the families [who arent guilty of anything] are ridiculous imo.
A 15 minute local call does not cost $3. Not to offend anyone but I have a lot of issues with the for profit prison system.

I never have been in that situation, but I agree a phone card should be used.

If it is a collect call, that money isn't going back to the prison system.

Then the person in jail should have thought of that and the many other inconveniences that come with jail-for them and their family.

I agree with this poster.  The calls cost so much because they are collect from a pay phone.  While I realize that it impacts the innocent friends, relatives, SOs of the incarcerated person too,  prison is intended to have a punitive effect.  It's not a country club or a resort.  There's a reason that the prisoners can't just call anyone whenever they feel like it.  While I'm not thrilled about incarcerated people getting free education on the taxpayers' dime, it arguably makes them more employable when they get released.  However, free phones for prisoners to friends and family, many of which are likely long distance, are not something that I think the rest of us should be paying for.  If you want to talk to them, buy them a phone card to avoid the collect charges.

The money should come out of their inmate accounts. They have money for tobacco. Why can't they pay for phone calls?

Oh well, they are getting 3 squares a day, room and board, use of a tv, computers, free health care, weight rooms, free lawyers. Geez folks isn't that enough. They shouldn't have commited a crime. theres people living in the streets that get nothing. Even those that are living in nursing homes don't get the freebies the inmates get. Lets get real here.

I don't mean to be cold hearted but prison is a punishment for a crime.  It's not suppose to be fun.  On the other hand, I do sympathize w/ the family members who didn't cause the crime but still suffer the consequences.
