Title: Leap year error
Post by: melissaotto1982 on March 01, 2013, 12:08:04 pm
Does anyone believe what there saying about how they believe they may have been wrong with adding the extra day in Febraury because the temperatures that we were having in February were more like January weather? What are your thoughts?

To be honest, I haven't heard that yet, and have never really thought about it.  Thanks for bringing it up - I will check this out.  :)

Weather is always changing.  Several years ago it was cold here (below freezing most of the time) from early Nov. to mid-April and then last year it wasn't very cold all winter.

The Leap Year happens every 4 years, and the last one was last year.  There will not be another one until 2016.  If it wasn't an extra day or if there was, it would not be a change in the weather.  The groundhog did not see his shadow, indicating an early spring.  Maybe the groundhog should have seen his shadow, because it is unusually cold this March as well. :star:

Adding or subtracting one calendar day does not make a difference.  The seasons are determined by the tilt of the earth in relation to the sun.  They are calculated based on those measurements only.  One more or less day in February does not change the weather whatsoever, as the Spring Equinox always takes place in March (which is based on the zenith of the sun), and the solstices are based on the length of the day.  The solstices always take place in June and December.

Climate is variable and changes are noted for a number of reasons, including ocean oscillations, solar activity, and a number of other factors.

I haven't heard this theory before.  I understand what they're saying... that if each year for the past however many years were shorter by one day we'd already be farther into the 2013 calendar and it would already be spring, which would match the warmer temperatures we're getting.  They're trying to offer an alternative to global warming.  Interesting theory, but it sounds a bit desperate to me.  ???

Everything in our universe runs in cycles:  day/night, seasons, birth/death, etc.  We can contribute to the weather.  They can even try to manipulate it, but I feel that would only make things worse.  We are headed into a new normal and one day our descendants will be worried that things are cooling down and have the same thoughts of why?, what did we do?, how do we fix this?   :dontknow:  They, like us now, will have to just accept that it's the natural way of things.   :peace:

I really have not thought about it, and I am not sure if I believe in the ground hog detakes when Spring actuall starts.  I remeber one time in March my son had a real bad asthma attach and was having a hard time breathing and I think he was around 3 or 4 but we had so much snow and ice the abulance was having hard time staying on the road. I think we are going to have a vey high humity and hot and dry air which I can't stand.

???  If you're going to have "very high humidity", and your son still has asthma, he'll have more trouble breathing.  On the other hand if you have "hot and dry air" he'll be able to breath better.  I hope for your son's sake that your weather is warm and dry.  :peace:

As for the ground hog...  If he can see his shadow that's because the sky is clear and spring is coming.  If he can't see his shadow that would be due to clouds which go with more winter weather.  Cute tradition, but not too mysterious.  :)

I haven't heard this, but it sounds like poor logic. Last year the temps were 75 in March! The extra day doesn't have anything to do with the weather, anyway.

Nope, it sure doesn't.  It has to do with the position of the Earth in relation to the sun.  That is all.  It is amazing how many people don't know this.  I am appalled at the science illiteracy of our nation.

Indeed it is. And honestly the earth is due for a climate change all together. It has happened before and it will happen again.

That is not true.  Leap years are real calendar years.

Had not heard about that either
Either way, everyone would be too lazy to change the leap date from February to another month
I guess well just have to deal with the weather being off

I think the weather patterns have been unpredictable for years and years and years and will continue to be so for more years and years and years...
