Pass this on to your grown children and anyone else you can think of. This has
been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your e-mail address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.
The caller claims to be a jury duty coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the Scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.
The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado, AZ, OR and more. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.
The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

I was called for Jury Duty, but was released because I have a grandson living with me and could not take him with me. I thank you ever so much for the information, cateyes1. It needs to be passed on to others because identity theft is a serious problem.

I've never had Jury duty so thank you i fear the day I get a letter in the mail about it.. :confused1: especially considering I have social anxiety thank you for this post.

NEVER give your social security number out to anyone who calls you on the telephone requesting it!
-
I clicked that "FBI" link, but the page doesn't exist on the FBI website.
Snopes? I wouldn't put too much trust into that website.

I have been called many times for jury duty and have not received one of those calls and this has been going around a lot. If in doubt just call the courthouse and they can give you any information you need. Itof course is a houxe.

Yeah, heard about this on the evening news believe it or not!!!

I don't give my social security number to any random idiot who calls me on the phone. I would like to think I would never have fallen for this. But thanks for the info. Now I will be working on something to tell them if they call me. hehehe
You could always tell them you are a convicted felon. You wouldn't be eligible to serve on a jury. What was the felony? I killed a person who randomly called me on my phone and bothered me during dinner. lol

This is good information, especially if a person has not been called to serve and does not know the procedure. I have been called up for Jury Duty twice in the past 3 months. The letter always has a phone number to call before time to report for duty in case it is settled out of court prior to trial time.
Scammers always seem to come up with new schemes to defraud others. A legitimate business or governmental entity will never ask for your social security number over the phone if they initiate the call.

Good to know - thanks for the heads up.

Thanks, I've already went through jury duty on May 2013 it was hell but they never called or anything like that. I got a Jury duty summons packet in the mail & I bodily went to the court house. 5hrs later, I wasn't chosen to be in the jury & it was tyring but got $15 bucks in the mail for attending! Everybody, never, never give out your SS# or any information from the phone or persons you first meet.
