Title: Do you remember...
Post by: camellia0 on September 28, 2013, 07:46:57 am
when the tv used to turn off at like 11pm? I was watching a Steve Harvey show and he mentioned that. Just think of all the things we could do if we didn't have a tv.

lol  yes i remember the days when the tv was not  "used" as much.  we could get alot more done, the kids were outside playing till dark we enjoyed each others conversations at the dinner table,,,,  i could go on and on  lol

i think we still need to turn the tv off and the computers off and enjoy the outside and our family,,,,,,,,  we don't know what we are missing !!!

I agree with you both. I watched very little tv as a kid. We were always off doing something outside. We walked everywhere and were always coming up with a new idea to try or game to play. We are definitely too plugged in today and we miss out on a lot because of ti.

I remember when certain channels went dark after a certain hour - AND - they played the National Anthem right before they went off for the night!  Sad place this country has come to!

I remember when we received a lot of TV channels without paying for them.  When Candy bars where .25 cents.  I was born in the 70's so I graduated from high school in 1990 and I can't believe how much has changed since than.  I can imagine what my parents thing or even my grandparents.  I do know I am considered young but My body feels like I am in my 70's.  I have not yet been blessed with grandchildren but right now that is good because I don't think my son is ready for that.  I see how hard it is for them to just make ends meat and where we live now is a hell  of a lot cheaper where I grew up in California.  I think the government has really screwed our kids on taxes and being single with no children.  With gas prices, food prices, and everything I took for granted when I was a teenager or even a young adult that they go through now.

I remember when candy bars were a nickel and so was chewing gum.  A one dip ice cream cone was a nickel also.  I was born in the 30's and I can hardly believe what some things cost now when I think back on it.  I don't recall the TV going off at 11 though.  It seems I watched it later than that.

I never really had that but even now I more use TV as background noise so I don't get distracted by every little sound around me.  Still, I remember when I had more time to be outside and run and I didn't despise the idea.  There seems to be so much to do that when I take a break to exercise (how little that happens) or just to relax, all I can think of is that there's something I could be working on.

I do remember that. They would have an announcer that said goodnight, then they would play the National Anthem, then a test pattern.

I also remember when the tv would turn off for the night. We used to have a box on top of the tv with numbers on it representing the different channels. There was a switch button move back and forth to the different channels. If someone wanted to change the channel, they got up in front of the tv and used that button. There wasn't the convenience of a remote, like we have today.

Yes! I was just thinking about that earlier. I remember that happening when I was very very young and all that static use to confuse me lol.

I remember "bad" movies coming on late at night. After my mom went to sleep I would stay up and watch all the things a young kid shouldn't be watching.  :angry7:

Nowadays, kids are exposed to everything at a much younger age because tv shows/movies are played non-stop throughout the day.

I do remember the cheap candy and the 70s version of what we called a tv remote (a big box with a long cord that attached to the tv that you literally needed two hands to hold  :) )....

Those were the days!

The biggest thing I remember was having to get up and turn channels!  Probably was a good thing we only got 3 - 4 channels back then!

I remember when we only had 3 channels to choose from, and the TV went off at 11 after the National Anthem was played.   Then we got 13 stations, boy did we feel rich!

As kids we watched cartoons Saturday morning, but they were over around 10 am, then it was outside to play.

We had a corner grocery store run by an older woman called Mrs. Miller (adults were Mr or Mrs then), if you went in for your mom, she gave you a penny candy.  On your birthday she gave you 25 cents worth!  You never lied about your birthday to get it twice, we just didn't.

I remember when I was about 7 or 8 years old, We went to our nieghbor to watch the TV show, it was 12 inches black and white TV. And there were only 2 channels. And it was not very clear, there were times that somebody went to the rooftop to fixed the antenna.

I was born in the 40's and of course grew up with good country and western music and a lot of gospel. Sure miss those days. You take a quarter to the show and get in, buy a coke and a bag of popcorn and or candy bar. But believe me those quarters were hard to come by. Everything was so much simpler back then. Did not watch much tv when it came along except for my favorite show the Americian bandstand.Other wise was aways too busy for anything else.

I remember days when we didn't have TV at all.  You make do with what you have and you have fun doing it.

I agree: Sometimes TV is a waste of your time. Be careful with your valuable time. And how you spend it.

I remember when there was a *bleep* on the TV and you had to get up off the couch to turn it to change the channel. I also remember having TVs that were just black and white and not color.

Seems like I remember the TV would "zone out" after a certain time.  I also remember changing channels and adjusting the volume using a round thing instead of a remote control.

I don't like having too many channels.  I prefer to keep things simple so I have an analog TV with a digital converter and an antenna.  Then I don't pay any monthly fees.

I think that computers and smart phones have become more intrusive and time consuming than televisions ever did. I am amazed when I go to a restaurant and see all four members of a family enjoying dinner while playing with their smartphones! Isn't that some good, quality family time together after a hard day at work/school (tic). Ipods seem perpetually plugged into the ears of our young and Iphones in the ears of their parents effectively blocking out all communications. Being able to skip calls from your parents, avoid calls from friends because it isn't a convenient time to speak? We are losing touch.

I lived in the UK in those younger years. I was born in the late 60's and I remember watching fantastic shows in the evening (in the 70's) like The Bionic Man and Charlies Angels.  We only had 2 channels to begin with, BBC1 and BBC2, and then a few years later we got ITV. Later on, Channel 4. So we then had 4 channels and I thought we were right up there with the times. We played tennis on the Atari and when we went outside, I played endlessly on the streets with my extendable rollerskates which fitted over my shoes. I remember it being the best christmas ever when I got a blue umbrella and one year, when we were a bit older, my mum took us to the store to show us a lovely sweatshirt and a fabulous pair of pajamas. We had to chose between them. Can you imagine my delight when, on Christmas morning, I got both!  We were so greatful for the little things. Nice memories.

Yea, I do remember that! I remember when they had a sign off of TV. I was born in the 50's and you were lucky if you had a TV they were so expensive. They were also a piece of furniture and weighed about 100 lbs. Oh the days!!

Ah, yes.  We had three channels.  The kids watched ""Fury"  "Sky King"  and "Beany & Cecil"  after school.  The Parents got the television after supper.  Sunday night the whole family would watch "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "Bonanza."   Good grief!  How old am I?
