The books I prefer to read are the ones written to teach something.

Any book can interest me. I have a friend who picks out books for me and they're always pretty good because she tailors them to my tastes. I like sweetie-pie gushy a lot, but I can get into sci-fi and historical. Whatever. If it's well-written, I can get into it.

Reading is so much better for you than watching television all the time. I seriously think that it's a plan, possibly by the government through the media, to dumb us all down so that we can be easily led. But that's another topic altogether. Hope I don't get bumped off for saying that.

I have 2 authors I look forward to reading.  Robin Cook and James Patterson.  Lately I've been reading more books that I can learn something to apply to my life rather be entertained.  James Patterson has even begun writing books for teens and my son has gotten interested in him.  Murder, medical mystery is what interests me in the book world.  Sure do regret donating so many of my hard covers several years ago.

I mostly enjoy mysteries, romances, and historical fiction.  I did like the Harry Potter series, she is a gifted writer.  I also read self help books, mostly on nutrition and Feng Shui. :present:

I like to read historical fiction and non-fiction, murder fiction and non-fiction (goes along with my favorite TV shows - Investigation Discovery), suspense, and religious books.  There are two authors for which I buy all their books (Sharyn McCrumb - Appalachian historical novels - and Ann Rule - true crime.)  I have never been disappointed in any of their books.  I like some current best-selling authors - James Patterson, John Grisham, etc.

I normally love a good mystery.  However, I have recently gotten into authors like James Michener and Clive Cussler.

I can go for a little suspense or drama but I prefer a romantic mystery. Also, any book written by Mary Higgins Clarke.

I love to get into a gripping thriller/mystery.  A lot of my favorites have been mentioned here already but I'll add a couple of REALLY excellent ones:
Lee Child writes about a character named Jack Reacher who is a former M.P. vagrant of sorts and is one of the most fascinating characters in a series.  Bonus is that there are at least a dozen Reacher books.
I just finished a book by David Baldacci - a mystery/thriller - excellent!  The name of the book is "The Forgotten"

Tana French writes mysteries set in Dublin and they are fantastic.  She develops the characters beautifully and you remember them long after you have forgotten the plot.
P.D. James has been around for awhile and she also has wonderful characters.  A central character is Inspector Dalgleish.  He is also a poet.  She is one of my very favorite authors.
I also enjoy some biography and read lots of "how to" books to help with using Photoshop, doing my photography, art etc. Never enough hours in the day.
One more series I must add:  The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo and the 2 follow up books by Stieg Larsson are gritty but excellent.
