Title: Do You Have Cable TV?
Post by: oldbuddy on January 19, 2014, 05:28:47 am
The next best thing to making money, is saving money and my cable tv with Internet was going through the roof! My monthly bill was like $170 and I finally had enough. I was talking to my son about it and he said he dropped cable and got one of the new Winguard flat panel HDTV antennas and got tons of channels to watch with no monthly payment. The antenna was only $29 one time!!!

Well we live in a hilly subdivision and when we moved here 40 years ago, we tried a normal TV antenna and only got one or two channels with so much snow you couldn't stand to watch it, so I didn't think it would work. To make a long story short, he brought his over, hooked it up in a few minutes and my jaw hit the floor. It got a better picture on the Network channels than the cable did.

So I am headed to Costco tomorrow to pick up a couple of them, so I can quit the cable tv vice. Then I ordered a competitive Internet service for $29 a month instead of $70 I have been paying, not to mention if I drop the cable tv and kept the same Internet service it would increase.

I should save about $130 a month after paying for the antennas and spending $8 a month for Netflix (which I already do anyway) and end up with all the entertainment I need.

My wife is on a trip, so last night I was surfing my favorite traffic exchange and watching Grey's Anatomy on my 32" Monitor.

Cable is the way to for us.  We had direct TV but every time the weather acted up we'd lose reception, now we don't.  Everything is bundled (phone, internet, and TV) and we pay $130/month.

The most comment I hear about cable is price. Yes I have a complaint and many others do too. Guess what that antenna most speak of DOES NOT WORK FOR Mountain FOLKS and many others. If companies do not apply to this then NO you will not get any channel except for what is in your area. Trust no matter what the channels will not come in. RESEARCH TO MAKE SURE THIS IS FOR YOU.

we have satellite.  It's not bad for time shifting purposes but a nuisance when it's raining outside and cuts the signal.

Personally I want to drop cable because we could practically use the internet to watch shows instead of cable tv.... However my brother still watch some shows so we can't get rid of it...

Time Warner Cable = television with ALL the channels + cable + phone.    Came to over $275 a month

I'm in the processess of cutting services.  The first that is going to go is the home phone line & private listing, to a voip NetTalk.    Everyone in my family already has a cell phone, so why pay the monthly $45 dollar cable phone line + $1.99 private listing fee.

The next thing to go is the cable modem I rent for like $8.00 a month, I'm just planning to buy one straight out from Amazon.

Then the cable boxes are going to be switched to Roku & appleTV.     You can get Time Warner on Roku, why pay for the box.

Should save about $900 a year after the initial costs.  I will still be able to keep all the channels.

Not about being frugal or cheap, it's about being smart & efficient.

I'm going to look at getting that antenna for the smartTV,  Thanks for that info

I have a bundle deal with time warner and even though I think it is a little expensive it is easier for me just having the one company to deal with. I am not very technical so I have to go the easy route.

I currently live with my parents so I don't really pay this bill but it's good to see some prices.  I hope to move out within the year if I can find a job and was worried about this expense killing my budget.  Good to know there are some cheaper ways to get some cable without the nasty cost that comes with it.  Is this antenna supposed to work most places or only in cities?

@aflyingmonkey: How do your run Time Warner through Roku.  I've heard it's possible but most people seem to have issues with it.

You missed my point, there IS NO BILL anymore. Once you buy the antenna it's yours with no monthly payments to pay for watching content.

I will need to check out this option. I have gotten rib of cable TV once and when I signed up for it again, they cut my bill by 50% for two years. I don't have HDTV but I know there are antennas out there that would save me a ton of money.

We've had satellite since 2000.  Before that we had the local cable and it was ok but bill kept going up every month so we switched.  Now I'm fed up with satellite cause it seems they are inching up on prices every few months or so.  Anyway, my husband had a chance to buy one of the new antenna's but it was used and doesn't work!  We were gonna use it in our gameroom only.  We may still try to get a new one but one of our daughters has antenna and she only gets 5-6 channels.  Guess it depends on where you live.

@aflyingmonkey: How do your run Time Warner through Roku.  I've heard it's possible but most people seem to have issues with it.

Time Warner streams trough Roku using an app ( I believe ), I've only heard that it can be done through word of mouth & Rokus are about half of AppleTV so it is worth a try.

I've got a total of 5 TVs running.   Two are now without the cable boxes & getting tweeked.  YAY
I am using AppleTV along with a digital box on one HDTV, & it doesn't get the TWC app yet, but does have HBO GO app.
I have a new Smart TV & it doesn't have even the HBO GO app, just Netflix, etc... , I need to try out the roku on it & or an antenna because it can't pick up any stations naturally at all.
I have one TV that is picking up everything through XBOX live subscription, even HBO GO, but not TWC.

There are a lot of options out there to be explored.

I no longer have cable. I tried Comcast for awhile, but it was just too expensive. Netflix is a good deal, however, I
dropped them due to privacy issues. They had a class action lawsuit because of consumer privacy concers. I don't
watch much tv nowadays. Besides, I'm sure the tel-lie-vision was watching me more than I was watching it. lol!

I would love to find another way to get tv other than what I have right now. I pay 156.00 a month but I have everything bundled. The area I live in I can't receive anything without cable. I don't have a dish but the power goes off quite often and then you have to reboot the system. I guess there really isn't much of a reason for me to complain though; I do get all the channels.

I understand where you are coming from cause I'm in the same boat - only thing is I already have one of those fangle dangle antennas but I only get "certain" channels on it so if I were to drop cable I would be losing a lot of channels and I'm not too sure about Netflix cause I'm not much of a "movie buff" - I prefer 1 hr. shows or sitcoms.  So I'm kinda stuck for the moment but if they keep raising the price I might just have to quit the cable.

Netflix has a lot of regular TV episodes too, only they are 45 minutes without commercials.

That brings up an interesting point. Since we are talking about ENTERTAINMENT and not one of the necessities of life, is saving $100 a month worth an adjustment in what we watch? I know since I made this change I have really enjoyed some new offerings like Retro TV and the Me Channel (old series like Archie Bunker and Mash) and not really missed cable that much.

We don't have cable since they don't have it where we live. So we do satellite but the cost of that is as bad. Between the TV ( a basic plan ) and the computer it costs us $130 a month.  But I have heard that the flat antennas don't work everywhere. We would really like to get our bill down. But if we give up what we have then our only options are no TV and dial up computer. Not a great choice.

We have an HDTV connected to a small roof top antenna. We actually use the arm for our old satellite dish to attach it to the roof. Right now I get more channels than my mom pays for basic cable through comcast. I had DTV for two years and I hated it. It was just too expensive for us and when my contract ran out I cancelled them.

Wish I could do the antenna but just won't work here for more than 1 or 2 channels. Keep having to renegotiate my deal. Want to drop the phone but with all the bundling TWC does would not really save much. The new PC and android apps are pretty cool though and can save some of the box fees.

I would LOVE to drop cable. We never watch TV any longer.  We're always on Netflix.

Where we are, there is only one provider, and you have to have cable to get internet, so it's frustrating to me. If we could drop the cable part entirely and just have internet, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

The only problem is we're mountain people too, like someone else mentioned in this thread, so there are just no other options for internet... other than dial-up (yikes)

Unfortunately we're stuck with a cable provider for our internet.  It's the only option here with fast and unlimited internet.  We just multiple devices and stream video all day long.  We ditched the cable itself and just have Netflix and DirecTV (so my husband can watch sports).  But DirecTV is pretty cheap, $30 a month for all the channels we need and some we don't.

I have had DirecTV for the past 2 years.  Since being new to this, at the time my hubby decided he wanted to watch something different, we tried to get Dish, but was told we would have to fork over $287 before even being considered.  We even tried Comcast (now Xfinity) and was presented with a problem because my brother in-law has an account with Comcast although he doesn't live in the house with us but uses our address.  I had to fork over $19 to DirecTV and we ordered the Family package, which consisted of 50 channels.  My hubby then decided he wanted the Western channel and I had to order it (it is in my name but he pays the bill).  He then wanted the Sports channel, which we were able to try for 30 days and he got mad because he is a football enthusiast and he could not see the games.  Our bill for the first year was $64.19 and was reduced to $53.91.   :rainbow:

I've got a $60 antennae on my roof and pay nothing for my TV.  I get all five major networks, four PBS channels, both shopping channels, THIS (a movie channel), three retro program channels, several Spanish channels, several religious channels and a Spike type channel.  Needless to say I can't watch all that, nor do I want to, but it's all FREE.  8)

I do choose to keep a landline with caller ID, which on it's own isn't bad, but my DSL is attached and that costs more than I'd like.   I live in a small town with limited options.  The next town has free wi-fi, if you live near enough to city hall.  I don't believe we've got the money to do that here yet.  :-\

I've purchased a Roku box for one of my analog tv, it picks up my time warner cable, HBO GO, plus our Netflix & Hulu subscriptions on it.  PLUS, a couple free movie apps

I haven't used the cable box for the past month.  Good bye one cable box, that will be $11 a month saved on cable charges.    Streaming is the way to go, just got to get used to the system.

Nope, don't have cable. I have a satellite connection, and honestly it's really not that great. It's getting more and more ridiculous what companies are charging and how little you get in return. We've already lowered the number of channels we get a couple times because the price is just stupid. But each of us watch different networks and so there are quite a few that are kinda like must-have's so we've still got service. Might look into some alternatives though.

I have direct T.V. and I love it.  :male:  :peace:  :star:

god i miss cable but we havent had it for almost seven years.  we have rabbit ears and netflix but here recently netflix has become really crappy they never put new things on and if they do its a bunch of b movie crap that i wouldnt want to watch anyway.  thinking about going back to cable for 19.95 a month for two years and ditching my netflix so then my bill would only be 10 bucks over what i am already paying it would be nice to finally have something to watch other then just 5 channels .  especially since i stay home all day with my kids.  i can only take watching the same cartoon so much before i will go insane.

We have Directv and I can't wait til our contract is up in July to switch. They have continually raised our prices. Even though we were supposedly in a 2 year contract. My daughter thinks it is hilarious that I have the date in my phone calendar that I can cancel Directv!
