Title: Bread
Post by: melodylogan45 on March 10, 2014, 08:58:52 am
Bread is so expensive. I am on a weight loss program and I have
To eat light bread and the cheapest I can find is 199.00, unless there
Is a sale. I had a coupon from aunt Millie's bread coupon for a free
Loaf, which I purchased and ate, but now I have to buy more.

What light breads do u eat?

I've looked at the difference in the bread calorie counts and could never justify going "light" with any product.  Basically, for what I ate of bread, all I would need to do is 50 jumping jacks to make up the calorie difference between regular and "light" breads.  Besides the calorie differences, I've found the ingredients used in most "light" products are actually worse for you than the regular ones (more chemical replacements to allow the calorie count to be lower and still "taste" good).

My solution to both the calorie count and price was to start making my own bread.  For the price of the ingredients to make bread (which is less than store bread uses), I can get 3-4 homemade loaves to the 1 store loaf (need to average this over about 30 homemade as there is an up front purchase of some ingredients, but they'll last nearly a year worth of baking).

The advantage to sticking to the philosophy of only eating bread you make is (1) you burn calories making the bread, assuming hand kneading vs using a machine, (2) I ate less bread because it was so good and more nutritious than the store bread, I was more satisfied and thus craved it less [similar to why you don't eat a whole bunch of banana in one sitting], (3) was less expensive.

Also, when I ran out of time or didn't feel like baking, well, I just learned to go without bread or bake alternatives (like homemade biscuits).

I realized recently that I haven't baked any bread for the past 3 months (got too busy during the holidays and just haven't worked it into my schedule).  And I really haven't felt like I was missing anything.

The only time I have bread is when I occasionally go out to eat, and when I have it, the bread doesn't taste nearly as good as my homemade stuff.

Something to consider as an alternative.

Can't you just get whole grain, the benefits outweigh the caloric intake.
You can just get rid of break completely, & eat something healthy.  For example, you can make lettuce wraps, wrap lettuce around what ever it is your eating, I do this on an ongoing basis.   Want a hamburger, peal off a big piece of lettuce off the head & stuff it, when your done filling it, just wrap it.    No bread at all.

I don't know what light bread is.  I usually get my bread from the Dollar Tree it's white bread.  Lately I have tried the honey wheat bread from Aldi and I love that bread it costs $1.27.

I eat whole wheat bread.  Whole wheat bread is a little bit cheaper the light bread. Just remember just look at the calories on the back of the breads and compare them. The light my say light but some aren't really. Besides whole wheat breads are a little better for you and your heart.

With regards to breads, it seems NO bread is not good for you.  In past years you were told to eat whole wheat bread-now that is bad for you.  There are a few breads out there that have less calories per slice.  Why not go online to find the less expensive ones and check if the store you shop has it.

Personally, I don't think anyone really knows what the hell they are talking about.

Well from what I gather all the food we eat whether it's bread or not it's not good for you because of all the chemicals that go into the food to help it to stay longer on the shelves of the store for people buy.. and yet we have to eat despite what the scientists and nutritionists say what is good or bad for you.... As for "light" bread I didn't think there was any "light" bread to begin with... And to pay 199.00 for a loaf of "light" bread well is ridiculous to me... I could spend 199.00 on more food than just one loaf of bread... My advice is enjoy any bread despite you weight loss diet your on for bread is yummy especially smothered in melted peanut butter or butter mmmmmmm (ish a total bread freak)

Whole grains that aren't overly processed are the healthier alternative because they digest slowly & release blood sugars slowly into your body so you don't get sugar spikes.   This is simple nutrition, simple carbs vs complex carbs.    Overly processed white anything is just junk for your body, tastes good no doubt, but not healthy at all.

Check out the 99 cent store for deals.   Mine gets organic & whole grains, name brands often/weekly.

I have a bread machine so I just make my own.  This way I know what's in it.  I usually alternate between whole wheat, rye, French Countryside loaf and pumpernickel.

I don't eat light bread. I have to find gluten free options which would be bread that has no wheat, no barley and no rye.  I don't consider the price if it's something I like because I feel I'm investing in my health.

I used to love bread, but I can't eat it anymore since gluten free bread is wicked expensive. :(
