I quit almost 9 yrs ago this coming march 2015. I had to do it! It's ALL physiological! I woke up one day and said this is my last pack FOREVER! I smoked that last pack BUT made it last like 10 days as I weened myself off it. I smoked like 2 cigarettes a day. One in the morning, kept very active during the day and then one before bed time. By the 3rd day my cravings weren't as strong but I was determined to QUIT! I joined NJ.QUITNET.COM and talked to others struggling as well, now I am a mentor and help people try to quit from time to time. I would talk to myself and say things like I am going to DIE if I don't smoke, my kids will have no mother, I would look on the internet and force myself to see ugly pictures of black hardened lungs and people who had cancer. it broke my heart and that is HOW I mentally tricked myself into quitting and I have NOT picked up a cigarette since March 24, 2006! I hope you do it! Do it for YOU and your family will support you and love you no matter what! Good luck!! Keep us posted! :) :) :star:

It is your decision and how you are  interested to quit it.

Post pictures of everyone in your life that you love dearly.  Look at these pictures often throughout the day.  Think about these people and what they mean to you.  Think about what you mean to them.  Then imagine how they would cope without you because smoking took your life.

I've never been a smoker so I don't know what it would be like to try and quit.  But I would think that focusing on the special people in my life may be a good beginning.

I wish you the best.   :)

I am not a smoker...never have been...so I'm not an expert.  However, I recently read that the most successful in the long term are those who quit "cold turkey."  That was a surprise.

The suggestion about pics of all those you love and thinking about how they would feel if something happened to you is an idea!  Put those pics where you easily see them throughout the day, including the car.

Of course, addictions are physiological and psychological.  You have to overcome both.  You need mentors and supports.  You need a variety of things to replace the habit, especially when stressful events occur.  Make a list that you can refer to.

And see if you can visit a hospital or hospice where there are patients with lung cancer or advanced COPD.  Probably difficult due to confidentiality.  But if you have been up close and personal while someone is dealing with one of these diseases, it might help you be strong in regard to cigarettes.

Do you know that many health care costs are related in some way, either directly or indirectly, to smoking?  Not all of course, but more than many might think.  Why do you think doctors do not want you to smoke pre- and post-surgery, for example?

Very good luck to you.  It could mean your life, itself, or the quality of your life.  By the way, an acquaintance who quit smoking about six months ago has been surprised by the extra money in his pocket each month.

You got a lot of good answers here. My boyfriend quit smoking 4 years ago. He got an 800 number, you might be able to look into Google. He got started with gums and a free supply for a few weeks. It was not exactly enough to finish the process, but he persisted. He had good days and bad days during the withdrawal, but he knew he was going to quit by telling himself that his lungs were damaged, as well as most of his body. He never looked back. He is saving money in the process, food tastes better. Now, he cannot stand the smell of cigarettes. Yes, you can do it. Use all the resources you have to help you.
Cheers.

I got the E-cig just because I got tired of having to go outside to smoke.....  I got it just to use at work.  That was 2 years ago last Feb.  I tried a regular cig only 1 time after;  I got so choked, I decided it was no longer for me!  ;)

Cold Turkey is the way, even if you have to try over and over. I did and finally on July 4, 1964 I did it, cold turkey. Both my younger siblings didn't and they are both dead from smoking.

my suggestion: never start. You cant become addicted to something youve never had.

my suggestion: never start. You cant become addicted to something youve never had.

That is excellent advice, but when a 12 year old gets subjected to peer pressure it's not always that easy.

That's not true cause I tried weed before and never got addicted to it. I cant stand the smell of it.

I believe in the cold turkey  :turkey: method, of course, but addictions are powerful.  :monkey: Monkey on your back, so to speak.

If you avoid the situations where you smoked before, it can help you not think about it so much.

Seriously, avoid those situations where you always smoked before! You can quit if you want to badly enough. Good luck to you.

You could use the e cigs or the patches. They have a new pill out called Chantix that you could talk to your Doctor about. There are also support groups that you could talk to. I wish you luck and hope that you quit smoking. :monkey:

I found it. I used the search and it came right up. I wrote this. hope it helps.

SMACKING THE PACK

Oh the sound of smacking the pack,
The sound that takes me 30 years back,
to when I smoked my first cigarette,
now Im wondering why I dont have cancer yet.

I know I gave it to 50 others with my second hand smoke,
And then I look at me unable to walk and its my joke,
the others who never smoked but breathed my air are now dead,
And Im coughing and wheezing and grumpy instead,
So being alive is so much fun,
When others are dead and I cant run.

I have sent them to their incenterator,
and all I could say is Ill see ya later.

And then I get another pack
and smack it and smack it and smack it once more,

because IM not sure if when I got out this door.
If Ill come back in and hit the floor.

So smack smack smack your cigarette pack
And put that 200 cartoon on the bakers rack.

Im happy when I use my inhaler,
cause I think of when I could tell her,
I love you hunny as I spit in her mouth,
all that second hand smoke debrie I coughed up down south.

Will I live to see another one put in the ground,
from my second hand smoke or will I not be around.

thanks once I quit smoking by taking a homeopathic called stop smoking and switched to a pipe. i would not allow myself to smoke a cigarette but only a pipe and soon I got nauseated with smoking and it worked!

As of last night, it has been 1 year since I had my last cigarette. You have to really want to stop first of all. I tried Chantex at one point, it did make me not want a cigarette, and the smell of them made me ill. But as soon as I went off the med I ended up smoking againbecause my husband wouldn't quit at that time. So he finally quit and once I saw that he was serious and off of them for 6 months I stopped. I still crave them but I don't want to start all over again with them. Good Luck to you, it isn't easy but you can do it if you are really ready.

I tried using the E cig but I didn't like it too much so I pretty much don't even know where it is! I always say that I'm going to quit one day. My sister in law said they are making their truck payment with the money they used to spend on smokes! That is a great incentive, but still you have to want to quit!

I don't smoke (nor have I), but I was told that chewing gum helps. Not necessarily the nicotine gum, just any gum. I've heard that it keeps your mouth preoccupied and you sort of forget about smoking.

If you really want to do something about the issue, first start by telling yourself that you are going to achieve this goal at all cost, then just do it......

I quit 5 years ago, I used patches, it was very difficult though, I smoked almost 3 packs a day. I can't tell you how much better I feel now though 5 years later! It was so worth the hard times!

Do you think using the patch is cold turkey...I think you could try the patch, or just try reducing your intake bit by bit daily.

I quit smoking four days ago thanks to vaping. I only use the VG based liquid as the PG is very bad for you. The smell of cigarettes are now foul to me and I used to be a two pack a day smoker. I am slowly cutting back on vaping and will eventually quit. The tax on cigarettes in Nevada is going up a dollar a pack so I'm glad I Vape now. I'm in Las Vegas BTW.

My mom died from cancer caused by cigrettes the day before her 53rd b'day.

That was before there were warnings and the cool Marlboro Man was in the ads (who also died from smoking).

It also killed my 42 Year old son two years ago, who had four teen-age daughters who to this day are emotionally affected deeply to this day.  We all miss him tons.

It ain't worth it, but the quitting is a blessing to everyone who loves you.

I wish you the best.  :rose:

Congratulations! I smoked for about five years before I started my journey to quiting. So far two years without a single stinky. It was harder then I thought it would be, I tried cold turkey, Itried gum and patchs. None worked, I did get a e cigarette. Im down to the lowest nocotine and plan to go off nicotine next month. After that It will be weening my self from never picking up the vapor pen again. So fair its worked slowly but surely. I dont even use it as much as I used to.

Cold Turkey is the way, even if you have to try over and over. I did and finally on July 4, 1964 I did it, cold turkey. Both my younger siblings didn't and they are both dead from smoking.

Amen to this. I never smoked seriously. I kind of puffed on them when I was a teenager and wanted to look cool.  :star: :star: However, I always dropped them and didn't look cool at all so I stopped. I think that was a definite blessing.  :angel11:

Most of the people I know that have quit just made up their minds to do it. I think if you REALLY want to quit, you can.  Maybe avoid the situations where you always smoked before. I've heard that is effective.

oldbuddy, I'm sure sorry about your younger siblings.  :(
