Should they be paid?

That depends on their contract or partnership with companies or the team they work for.

They should at least get a free ride, with books, supplies, room and board paid, and a stipend.  Some of the sports bring in so much money to the schools with tv revenue, admission fees, souvenirs.  Without the athletes there would not be any revenue.  Seems like a small cost to pay, also if the athlete is injured he/she should get to finish his/her education, not have to drop out.   Just because you have a good negotiator, some things should be equal for all the athletes.

Yes, if they don't have a full scholarship and no if they have a full scholarship.

I really don't think they should get paid. They're also there to supposedly get an education. I don't think whether they have a scholarship matters or not.

No they should not get paid, they get a scholarship which help pays for their education, but they should be allowed to work a job if they can or do things like signing autographs.

I say....yes. I mean if they are doing the work of professional athletes why not pay them a lil bit. They should make strict guidelines so people can't just get paid for sitting on the bench. If they get hurt playing ball that affects them being able to go pro and possibly limit their efficiency of whatever they were actually getting their degree in. Not everyone will go pro or get a job as soon as they graduate so with that money they could set it aside for their future or maybe even help others that didn't have the opportunities they had.

won't happen would have to pay every athlete and cost would be too much since only a few sports actually make money.

Should they be paid?
No. They should be studying. I am not saying they should not be eligible for gifts. They should get some kind of reward for their abilities on the field. But I think paying them would do something to the game. It just would not be the same. BMaston12

I do agree if they don't have a scholarship. I do see why they would want to get paid, you put a lot of time into this sport and if you do not get a scholarship with it and do not make it too the big leagues then they potentially wasted a lot of time. They work hard so maybe they should keep some of it.

I have mixed feelings on this.  I don't know if they'll ever get paid.

They should not be paid a wage.
They should get Tuition & a monthly Stipend covered.

Seems unfair to the athletes that the school is making so much money off them that they shouldn't get paid something; but in the grand scheme of things they are in college for an education.    Some of those professors/college coaches are making some insane money off them, too.  They retire with hundreds of thousands in bonuses, or whatever they call it, & get an average of $26.000 a month for retirement - yes, that is not a typo it's A MONTH.  Penn State disclosed all this information when they had their scandal going on. Turns out it was quite similar to other big name college sport teams.

Should they be paid?

They do get paid.  They get a free ride to college and get away with murder when they are arrested for crimes because they play football.

College athletes are already being paid.  A free college education is worth a lot of money these days.

When I first read this post I was a bit concerned because people were saying yes, then I kept reading.  Whew, glad so many say no.   They are not there to "play sports", they are suppose to be getting an education and I say "suppose to" because so many are not getting the education they should be to prepare them for life after college.  It is a very small percentage that go on to play professionally, actually baseball has the most that go on to be professionals (11.6% as of 2012).   As many have said, the ones that are getting all the attention are already on full ride scholarships.  There is already too many scandals involving college sports, paying the athletes would only cause more.   There should be much more regulation on college sports we don't need to be considering paying them.

I think that most of them already are in one form or another.  D1 schools give full rides to high level athletes to play at their schools...and occasionally the exceptional student.  That full ride includes food, lodging, trainers, and tuition. My daughter has been accepted at several high end schools because she has never received less than an 'A' in her scholastic life. All of her classes in High School were AP classes (college equivalent classes) and her grade point is a perfect four point five. Captain of the Tennis Team/#1 Seed for the last three years. National Honors Vice president, Student band Manager. Deca National invite four years running.Syracuse offered her five thousand dollars towards a $63,000.00 tuition. Carnegie Mellon offered $4,000.00 towards $65,000.00 tuition.  University of Colorado offered her $16,000 towards $35,000.00. Boston University $4,000/$52,000.00.  College athletes are getting over $250,000.00 if they stay in college for four years...paid to get an education.
