Title: Internet Trolls
Post by: countrygirl12 on June 16, 2015, 04:42:41 am
Have you ever been attacked online over a random comment that was not made to any particular person?  Just a comment on a story?  I was reading on yahoo this morning, a story that personally I didn't agree with the poster of the story, but anyway, a couple of people expressed their own opinion and it was not an opinion that agreed with the poster or felt sorry for them (also did not attack them) and they were personally attacked by other posters.  Called names, insulted, put down, and talked horrible to.  I don't get that.  How can people not see that they are not better when they do that?

I honestly believe there are way too many people with no job who sit at home and troll the internet just looking for someone to argue with.

Internet trolls are like bugs, insects. They are annoying. They have nothing better to do but to annoy other people. And they do it in many ways. They leave distasteful comments, they bash someone online, they harass them and even stalk them. Some even hack or try to. Some try and discredit you as a person. Horrible.

I know.  And it irritates me not only when some idiot is attacking me but also when I see it happening to someone else.  You don't have to agree with everyone and you are not going to.  I just don't get why people feel the need to "put others in their place" when the person makes a comment they do not agree with.

Coincidentally, on another site where I comment periodically I had some little twit start jumping on me and calling me names and then says how I am mean and she is only 11 years old.  I look at her profile where she has her face and again states she is 11 years old.  You have to be 13 to have a profile.  I reported her and she was deleted. LOL  So I guess she told me.  : )

Idk.  Maybe it is just me but lately I have noticed more and more how mean people are.  In person and especially online.  Wanting to call people names and put them down when you say something they don't agree with.  I wonder if people realize that they will give an account not only for every idle word they say but also the words they type to others on the internet??

There are a lot of people who are just looking to pick a fight. I don't understand people who enjoy drama.

The best thing to do with trolls is to just ignore them (maybe mention that you don't talk to trolls, so others realize that they didn't get the best of you, just that you refuse to play their game). As you noted, they tend to be trolls because they enjoy getting into arguments / fights. It's like the drunk at the end of the bar that just tries to pick fights on anyone regardless of the reason.

We have a couple of family members on facebook that have been kind of doing that - they have gotten into this political thing talking about politicians and arguing back and forth and saying insulting things about each other's opinions.  Like the rest of us want to hear it.

I haven't been on the receiving end personally but I've seen many comment sections filled with trolls. Some people just want to cause drama and be mean. Most of the time I bet those people wouldn't have the guts to say anything like that in real life.

I have and have had to ban several of my own family members because they were making horrible comments to me.  personally my life has never been more drama free then the minute i banned them from my facebook  and other social media page.

Of course not. lol. People get real brave when they are posting online.  Thing is - it is not that hard to find out WHO you are really talking to. And more and more people are being held responsible for things they say to people online.  Or at least being outted to the world. lol

Yeah been in a similar situation.  All I can say is people are stupid.  I don't do facebook anymore.  I don't understand it but seems most people are not happy unless they are in the middle of some drama filled soap opera.

internet trolls are pretty much as you said...people with way too much time on their hands that are too scared to say what they think to people in person so they attack online and hide behind an anonymous name.  sad really

It is a shame when people feel that it is acceptable to be derogatory to other people they don't even know. I accept that we are all entitled to our opinions but I question someone's intent when the conversation serves no purpose but to attack and demean other people.

Idk.  If you didn't do you want me to attack you and call you names?  LOL.  I am guessing you did because when I replied it doesn't have the red squiggly line under anything other than your user name.

I agree with everyone.  Although sometimes when you are personally attacked by some idiot you don't even know it is hard to not fire back.  And I am talking bad attacks.  I was recently called a *bleep* and a liberal simply for making the statement that I am a Christian.  Now try to figure that one out.  Smh.  And since our discussion on the other thread I am self conscience when I use the abbreviations.  : )

Yeah, I just totally don't get people at all.  Online, in person, or any where.  It really amazes me at what a person will say to another person online simply because they don't agree with something they say.  Sometimes it is if people don't realize they are actually talking to a real person on the other end.  Seriously, if you were talking in person would you tell someone to go kill themselves because you didn't agree with them?  I guess some people probably would.

I pretty much call these situations( Fish On a Hook)
The Troll's are the hook and they are baiting for fish... (once you get into this situation there is no win no matter what you do or say)
Which is why i try to stay out of situations where two people are in an arguement over something i post.. or something i say or someone else post's or says...
Everyone has a diffrent view/ prespective on things
Which makes the world go around because nobody in the world is the same.. and that should make people feel good
because it makes us all unique..
I don't understand why anyone needs to attack anyone ... For shame...

There have been times I have defended someone who was attacked for no reason.  And I tend to want to defend myself as well.  But you are correct.  They are just looking for someone to take the bait.  If you pay attention you will notice, if you have not already, when you say something that the other person disagrees with they automatically start hurling insults and slams.  I just don't understand people any more at all.

I've been insulted on here . It happens. Some people have too much time on their hands and others are overly sensitive. There are some sites I avoid even reading comments anymore because they're so crazy. I know I completely stopped going to one site because the people were so catty and immature. I was accused of all types of things and constantly insulted so it wasn't worth my sanity to continue to visit.

EVERYONE is entitled to their own point of view.  Occasionally, I've had bullies respond to a comment I make and it might make my blood boil.  My way of dealing with it; is that, I no longer go back and read comments after I comment because I don't care what other people think about my opinion.

It's different if it's set up like a debate.  People are going to view things from different angles and that's perfectly alright.  The problem is when a person decides to launch a personal attack on someone.  That would be considered negative and unhealthy behavior.

It seems like wherever on-line that allows people to "comment"---it never fails, a troll will show up.  It doesn't matter if it's news, a video, news of a homicide, animal abuse, some family lost a child, someone's house burned etc. a troll will pop up and post something horribly cruel.  The best thing is when everyone else just ignores them and keeps posting encouragement in support of those who are suffering.
Trolls have NO sense and someday they'll get to eat their own words.  :)

The problem is that the Internet gives people anonymity so they think they can say anything they want without any repercussion.  It is who those people truly are inside.

Very true.  And the Bible says we will give an account for every idle word spoken.  That also includes words typed on the internet.  I have read the TOS on most sites and every one says you cannot do certain things.  I have been on another site where a kid age 9 (this is clearly stated in her profile and you can tell by her fish face picture) and she constantly yells at people she doesn't agree with saying "go kill yourself".  I have reported this several times but last time I checked the comments were still there and her profile is still up.  So apparently they don't care.

And I am guessing she is like the bullies that kept telling a classmate to kill herself and done horrible things to her online and she finally did kill herself and they just laughed and said they didn't care ---  she would probably be the same way.  I think people tend to forget when we post online we are talking to real people.

I had a familier situation on this matter. I only stated that everyone had their rights to state their own opinions, but I guess to the minds of those who dont care, just stirred up afew commotions. I found myself arguing back and forth with so many who just didnt understand or cared, I finally gave up because I didnt see myself getting anywhere with them,  so I let things be. I ignored  their messages and so forth. I guess, after they realized I wasnt repling to their messages, they  finally left me alone. Never felt so relieved, I was finally out of drama.

Yes, this has happened to me about a couple of times. I only comment on new stories that relate to me personally. I have been called a freak and a daydreamer.....whatever!!! Lol
I avoid commenting on anything now because of the hate spreading around the internet in huge portions. This is a very sad situation, but I take it as a situation that can be avoided in my control. Trolls are just there because they know that they can get away with their ridiculous comments hiding behind a computer screen. Just ignore them and only comment if the story relates to you personally, if not, then don't bother to comment!  :glasses-nerdy:

Yeah, it's crazy how mean and violent people can be toward someone they don't even know simple because they state their opinion.  And most times when people get so riled and start attacking someone THEY have misunderstood the comment to start with.

Yeah, I do that too now.  Even sites like this one where things are more strictly controlled at times it is still an act of congress to get a comment removed.  Although over all I think people on here are pretty cool with their comments.  And you can disagree with someone without attacking them.  And sometimes when you disagree if you can just have a discussion you can see things a different way.

I see people resort to personal attacks all the time on Facebook because they don't have a real argument. I expect that from teenagers but these are usually older people. I've never felt the need to resort to insulting a person's looks, job, education, etc because I don't have a valid argument but I see it so often

It is harder to ignore someone when they launch a personal attack on you.  One of the things that gets me is like lately the gays wanting to scream their agenda and shove it down everyone's throat but if a Christian simply says they do not agree they are called names and the gays try to get their businesses shut down.  I have about decided to build a 20 foot wall around my property and shut this crazy insane world out of it.
