Title: Scammed by Netspend!
Post by: southernhorizons on January 28, 2016, 08:31:20 am
I was scammed by Netspend! I've had a account there for several years, and add money regularly through Paypal. I hardly ever used it for purchases, because of the fees, but I saved it for times when I wasn't sure if a particular offer was on the level, to save my main checking account from fraud. A couple months ago, I tried to log in to check my balance, and I got a message saying that there was a problem with my account, and to call the customer service number. So I did, and they told me that I was no longer eligible for an account! They said they would send me a refund check by mail. I don't remember the exact total I had in my account, but I know it was at least $99. (I'm not sure if that was before or after the last Paypal deposit I made, so it may have been more). Anyway, they only gave me a check for $54! That means they stole almost half of my balance! I'm definitely going to report them to the BBB, because that is blatant fraud, but I know that money is lost forever. What scam artists!

It's like an online checking account. I had it because they pay $20 for referrals, so it was a way to get free money. But now they turned into a scam.

Reporting it to the BBB is the biggest waste of time on earth.  If you really want to report it, go to the link provided, below.  Scroll down that page to "Report Internet Fraud."  Under that topic, there's a blue link, "File a Complaint."  If you want results, this is where you'll get it.  Here's the link:

https://www.usa.gov/online-safety

You can also report it to your State's Attorney General.  Another place you WILL get results.

NetSpend charges you $5.95/month for inactivity, another $5.95 for a refund check, as well as other fees that are all documented in the agreement for service. I'd guess all the fees charged were legit.

Why would you put $100 on a card you have no intention of using for any purchases?  That doesn't make sense.  WHY are you no longer eligible for an account?  Either you are leaving details out or I would demand an explanation for why I was canceled.  I am also curious if you didn't have an account you could log in to that you could see and keep up with deposits.

I would get a prepaid card from Walmart.

Oh no I am so sorry that happened!! I use Netspend also and this is very discouraging.  I know it makes ya feel helpless.  There should have been some type of better explanation!!  Good luck with things going forward and thanks for the info!

I thought about using Netspend, but I decided not to use it because the monthly fee is too much.

I heard prepaid cards have inactivity fee of $4.95 - $5.95 every month. Meaning that if you don't use the funds for a month, they take it off everytime... Make sure to read their terms of service and see how much they take off a month due to inactivity... I also heard of the $3 processioning fee for prepaid cards (not sure but the prepaid card I got from Inboxdollars did)

I never heard of Netspend.  So sorry to hear of your experience. I would report to BBB, file with your state consumer protection, and FTC.
