Title: Phrases that no longer have meaning
Post by: lbeery on June 28, 2016, 10:04:46 am
Recently a co-worker (obviously young) asked musingly, Why do they call it dialing the phone? Gosh, how old I felt when I explained it to here.  There are a lot of these phrases out there.  Under the dryer, can't go out tonight because I have to wash my hair.  TV Dinner. Writing a letter....who else has one?

Is TV Dinner a phrase? I think that you are confusing phrases and what YOU perceive as older things ::) I am over 50 and I know about kids who can't comprehend how things were when we grew up.  It is hard for me to imagine my Mom didn't have a TV when she was young and listened to the radio or read books.  I guess if kids nowadays want to check out how things used to be they can Google it because so many of them are ignorant. 8)

Not a phrase, but I was using Microsoft Word and noticed the "save" icon was still a floppy disk.

With all of the touch-screen computers / computing devices (eg smart phones), what's scary is that in the not-so-distant future, "clicking" (as in "click on the icon") will be one of those outmoded phrases.

An item, not a phrase, that long gone is the "ice box".  My husband occassionally uses the term because his mom called the refrigerator that.

When our daughter was little, my husband asked her to put somethig in the ice box for him.  She put it into the freezer section of the refrigerator.

Be kind, rewind...isn't really a phrase said very often anymore...

How young was the person? I'm 26 and know what all of those mean.

People still go under the dryer at hair salons and kids are still taught to actually hand write letters.

My kids saw a dial phone at an antiques store and had all sorts of questions about how it worked. I told them you would get a dial tone.

Does anyone remember remotes being called clickers?

I remember when # was called the pound sign, not a hashtag!

That if funny, I was thinking of things or words last week.  The words: 'Peace Way' was used.  I still like words like that since such much is making a come back.

It won't be too long before "The check is in the mail" or "I'll write you a check" will fall into this category.

Hi  What are som e old phrases?  Ok, I have some old phrases which are no longer used in the Spanish language.
\\"Qvo"  which is slang for "What's happening?"

"Ese"  which referred to a friend in one's youth growing up,  "Hey ese ....what's happening?"    Watch "Born inLa" and you will see what I mean!

And, what about this one.  "Talk to the hand!"

I was thinking about pay phones in the same way. How they just aren't a thing anymore!

Throw the words "cassette" and "Walkman" around and watch some blank expressions on faces.

My first "real" full-time job out of high school was as a switchboard operator. Who still knows what that is nowadays.

I loved it, but talk about an anachronism. No, not me. The job; okay?  :P
