I have a very picky uncle when it comes to gifts. He's also diabetic. So I am trying to get ideas to get a gift to him he would ACTUALLY like! He's usually a pain to shop for because anything I give him, he's always got something to say about it! I have asked before what he is interested in, but it's very limited. Like if I got him a movie, he may already have it. Gift cards are very impersonal to me, so I don't know what to get him! My mom and dad are also at a loss as to what to get him too. I plan on getting a gift card as a small part of his gift, but I want to add other things.
Things he likes are: some anime, movies, candle making (which I don't know what to get for him to make them) and he does all the cooking too for his mom and brother. I thought about making him a robe because he complained that none of the store made ones are the length he likes, but my mom keeps forgetting to ask him for measurements! I didn't want to do it, because then he would know I was up to something. If she does it, then he may think we are looking for clothing for him.
I know it seems weird to ask here, but I really am at a loss!!
Anyone have other ideas on something I could get him he would actually like?

I like the candle making idea, I am sure you could find something on line to get him that may be a little different. It could also remind him of you while he is doing it.
-
The candle making is a good option. You can buy candle making kits online. Just search for the kits and you should be able to find something that you like.

well diabetic socks are a good idea maby a good brans in styles he would not buy himself/.
-
If he is picky and doesn't like anything I would give him a gift card or cash. If a person always had something to say about a gift I gave them I would not give them anything.
-
Since he's diabetic and does all the cooking maybe a diabetic cookbook would work as one of his gifts. And cash is always good. :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose:

Thanks all! My dad and I also thought maybe a "movie night" type bucket with one of his favorite movies he hasn't gotten yet, maybe a movie gift card and some things like popcorn and soda. I was thinking of looking for some diabetic/sugar free candies, I don't know what kinds of candies are good.
We also thought of getting him a themed game like a DR. Who Monopoly or something. I just wanted to get him like a few little things too.

Do you have any suggestions on which kind to get?
I also heard skin care products were good, because diabetics can have skin problems, so what would be good for that?

I'd stop giving him gifts. He seems petty and ungrateful.

You need to insist he tell you the type of things he would like.Or just listen to him and wait until he express something he desires to have. For instance, I shopped in Payless Shoe store recently; my daughter mentioned to me she likes a pretty brown purse. When I need to get her a gift, I'm going to get that for her.

I used to make candles and loved it! I bought my supplies at the local craft store (Hobby Lobby).

That's what I thought about doing, but my mom insists we get him something, even if it is a combo gift for him, my granma and other uncle, which I hardly know cause he hasn't been around all that much. He got a little bit better after my one uncle passed away, but still.
My dad said he's not that hard to shop for, anything Sci-Fi, Dr. Who, Anime... BUT I don't know what he already has. He expressed that he wanted a robe years ago, but didn't like any store bought ones. I found a free pattern online and was going to find out what material he liked and get his measurements, but my mom keeps forgetting to ask him and I know if I do it, he will know what I am up too!! I might make it for his birthday instead.
I'm also looking for a doll for my granma since she collects them. Not sure what to get her just yet. I'm still looking for the right one for her. Her favorite color is red. I thought of getting a Barbie and just the material and make her one, but I've got a list of things to make still and time is limited so I'm not sure if I would get it done in time.

If he likes anime and he doesn't have a Premium Membership in Crunchyroll you could always gift him a subscription plan ( https://www.crunchyroll.com/store/p/163393/Premium-Membership-Gift-Twelve-Month (https://www.crunchyroll.com/store/p/163393/Premium-Membership-Gift-Twelve-Month) ). Crunchyroll is a pretty well known anime, manga, korean drama site that anyone can view, but for ad free, HD streaming, and latest episode you need to get the subscription. If he complains he already has one, then I guess he could use the gift when his subscription runs out.... However this is only he watches anime regularly (not something if he does rarely).
Like Crunchyroll gift subscription, you can find movie giftcard. If he goes to a specific movie theater you can get a gift card that he could use to purchase the tickets or snacks with. If he likes viewing movies at home, you could get him a netflix giftcard. A good collection of shows and movies there.
If all else fails then get him an Amazon giftcard. Not sure anyone will complain on getting an Amazon giftcard. Use it to buy stuff you need online
This is why my grandparents/parents just give me and my brother money instead of gifts. They are afraid we don't like the gift they bought or we have the item already. However I will be fine whatever they get me since they did so much for me already.

I always give out gift cards especially to someone who is hard to shop for. sometimes it is the best way to go.

What about a gift card to Michaels, Hobby Lobby or another craft store that would sell candle making supplies?
-
Candle making is an art - and supplies are costly. Any craft store has supplies and most of the associates that work in one could make suggestions on what sort of things he could use... commodities for candle makers such as wic, oils and colors are great!

Have you thought about some type of gift basket? Thought I would put that idea out there.
Yes, I agree with the other person that the man shouldn't be making comments. That sounds ungrateful to me as well. I have a few family members that are hard to buy or shop for when buying gifts but they never make comments and are always grateful no matter what I buy.
My mother won't use gift cards on herself, she ends up buying things for the house or other people so I stopped buying those for her.
Wish you luck on your presents!

I think you are a truly thoughtful person to care so much about another person being happy.
I understand (as most of us can relate) some family can be really tough but family is family. You have a good soul!
I read some of the other comments and I would go with the gift basket idea. Candles, diabetic candies, cookbooks, spices perhaps. This way if he does complain hopefully it will not be about everything you put in the basket & hopefully you can say "but you did like something and give him a big smile"!

I like the gift card to the craft type stores that sell candle making supplies....you can always make a cute card with pictures of homemade candles. It shows you care about him and want to get something he likes. You might even offer to go shopping with him when goes for his supplies.

a gift card works well, the more general, the better [VISA, for example].
it is difficult to buy for other people.
they are mostly disappointed with the gift or the item they want is extremely expensive and takes 5 people to pitch in to meet the cost.
-
Well, if he likes to cook -how about a cookbook by someone famous that he tries to emulate? As for the "robe" thing, maybe your Mom could kinda be looking at a magazine of "men's" clothing and when she flips a page to see a "robe" she could casually say "look at this robe - looks comfy and long enough" and get his reaction cause then you would know how long, fabric choice, etc. Hope you find the "perfect" gift!!
-
Well with people that are picky like your uncle a gift card or Cash is the way to go, even when you think that's impersonal. I really really like when I get a gift card or cash!
-
It seems like you put more effort into gift giving than I do. My dad has type 2 diabetes and I usually send him some KIND bars. They're low on the glycemic index and they're considered somewhat healthy in other ways.
If I have to think too much about a gift....
I'll surrender and buy and Amazon gift card. That way, they can choose what they want.

Find a gift that will touch his heart. I worked in a nursing home years ago and had an elderly female patient that treated her family like that. Ungrateful for everything they did for her and gave to her. One year, she told me she absolutely loved Barbara Mandrell. I wrote to Ms Mandrell and got an autographed photo from her addressed to the woman. I bought a picture frame and wrapped it up. I was working Christmas day and took the gift to work. This lady and her family were in the lounge exchanging gifts when I arrived at work. I walked in and gave her the gift. When she opened it, she cried and said it was the best gift ever. Later, her daughter came to me and said thanks to my gift, it was one of the best CHristmas's they had ever had. Find something that will touch his heart; something unexpected.

A box of sugar free candy is a nice gift since he probably doesn't get many treats
-
a gift card would be nice...to a place here he gets his candle making stuff from
-
Just do something from the heart. Maybe cook him a meal. I don't know anyone that would complain about a good home cooked meal.

Nothing like a personal gift like a house robe, so perfect. Diabetics need cozy, foot care, add house slippers and diabetic socks. He would appreciate these. :present:
