Title: Dr Strange
Post by: JediJohnnie on November 11, 2016, 12:47:32 am
Saw the new Marvel movie Dr Strange, this week. Not as familiar with the character as I am others, but they made it easy to get into his world of magic and so forth. Great visuals and a great cast. If you're into the comic book genre, I'd definitely suggest checking it out.

I was never into the comics and never knew much about ANY of the Marvel heroes, except maybe Spiderman and the Hulk.  Earlier this summer, my wife decided to rent The Avengers on blu-ray.  We liked it.  She and my daughter had previously seen the first two Iron Man movies.  I've only seen the last five minutes of the first movie.  Since watching The Avengers, we have rented several other movies in the Marvel series, but we have watched them completely out of chronological order (and still have a few more to see).  That has created a few issues trying to settle in to each movie at the beginning and getting acclimated to where the plot lines are at.  Then there is the teaser preview clip at the end of the credits... more times than not it turns out to be a preview of something we have already watched!  LOL

But all in all it has been a fun alternate universe and we love watching for the Stan Lee cameos in each movie.  Also some home town trivia.  I knew this before watching the movie, but it was cool to see it... The opening sequence in The Avengers when Loki arrived to steal the staff/scepter was filmed in a NASA vacuum chamber just south of Sandusky, Ohio close to where we live.  The Plum Brook NASA site is usually off limits for any outside visitors, but once every 5 or 10 years, they make tours available.  They just did that this past June and we were able to attend.  It was quite impressive.  The tour guide talked briefly about getting to meet Samuel L. Jackson when the movie was filmed several years ago.

I heard of him but never read too much about Dr. Strange in comic books. Maybe i might go see just because it's Marvel.

As per usual, I'll wait til it comes out on demand. Although that ugly bald character (I forget the actresses name) is turning me off from the movie. She played an androgynous angel in Constantine now this. I don't ever want to see her in another movie again. She's very, how should I say this nicely?...Off-putting.

I have heard a lot of good things about this movie; I hope to see it in the theaters soon! I know what UGetPaid is talking about with watching the MCU out of order... Part of the reason why I haven't been watching S.H.I.E.L.D. has been due to this very fact; the few episodes I've watched mention things that I assume are in some of the movies that I also haven't seen. However I'm thinking that these movies that introduce new characters tend to contain their plot within its own movie rather than relying on the people seeing earlier ones. Case in point, I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was good and didn't refer to the Avengers, Asgardians, or any other characters in the MCU; it was completely self-contained yet introduced more characters and themes into the MCU that later movies can latch onto.

Dr. Strange is one of my favorite characters in the Marvel Universe! I have always liked him. My dad liked him too and it looked like a really great movie from the trailers. We may see it next weekend, but that all depends on how things go since I have some other plans already.

We ended up going to see it in the theater last Friday.  It was ironic because it was just earlier that day that I posted my above reply in this thread -- but it was at my wife's suggestion/request that we went to see it.  I won't give up any spoilers.  It was a good movie, but a bit of a depart from the other Marvel comic book movies. There are some references to the superheroes and teasers of a future tie-in, but the Dr. Strange movie itself could stand alone independent of the rest of the Marvel universe.

I was not familiar with the character or comic but I liked the movie. The magic and world created in the movie was really neat

I am not into the Marvel movies; but, I know a young person who is TOTALLY into Marvel everything.  He watches podcasts and goes to the Comic Store to buy the new issues.  He has T-shirts and lots of action figures and posters and bedding and even writes a blog of his own about Marvel!

I just saw it this weekend and enjoyed it a lot. I do agree that even though they mention the Avengers, infinity stone, and has a tie-in clip during the credits, you didn't need to watch any of the other MCU films in order to get what was going on. It was pretty much an independent film that anyone could enjoy; a great way to introduce a new character to the MCU that I look forward to seeing in upcoming movies.

I was hoping it would be good, I love the lead actor.  It always amazes me when they go from their natural to an American accent.  I can't wait to see.
