Title: What types of jobs do you consider good for someone over 50 -70 years
Post by: Ittai on October 15, 2017, 12:27:10 pm
I have always seen people over 50- 70 years old working but never give any thought of what types of jobs would be ideal for them? I just assume that people work because they have to take what they can get and others enjoy what they do.

I guess they can do whatever they feel they can handle. My father in law was an accountant and he worked at it up till his death at age 72.

That's between each individual and their employer, for me it's whatever I can do on my own schedule and not stand on my feet all day, which is why I work from home online, even if the pay is less.

Whatever they want to do and comfortable doing it. Others don't have a choice, whatever is available because of the age .

There are a lot of elderly Walmart greeters in my town.  Some work fast food over lunch.  Some just keep doing what they've always done.  Unless their health or physical disability restricts them.  I don't think I've ever seen a construction worker over 60.

Anything they feel comfortable doing. They have the same right to a job as anyone else, no discrimination here in the USA.

If they can I suggest working online, but I understand some don't like the computer, but I would.

Whatever they want to do and are physically able to do.  But seriously 50 is far from old, most people 50 and + are working their full time jobs.

I would say what ever they are comfortable doing. When I worked in retail I much preferred a senior over a smart a** college student that would not listen to what they need to do  or would not stop talking on the phone   or among themselves on the job. they just could not get it through their heads  getting  paid meant working.

It depends on their physical stamina, I guess. Me myself, I would probably need something that wouldn't take a lot of physical stamina. But my mind is very healthy and I could do a job that takes brain power!

If their health is not really a problem, I've seen some driving Buses, large trucks, nurses, teachers, servers, it's what they can handle when they get that age.

I returned a car to enterprise this morning.  The office is inside a car dealer. 2 retired gentleman were hanging out there.  They knew the in's and out's of what needed to be done around there .. but didn't do anything until they were told.  Apparently they drive the cars from one location to another...and when people need rides in between dropping off and picking up - they do it.

Part time work that provides flexibility is good....something like a substitute teacher, too - they are always in high demand

I think that they can do whatever they want to do.  If they have worked a job they liked for several years then they should be able to continue to work until they want to retire.

I retired at 62 but honestly sometimes wish I was still working.  Mainly for the money but also to be more active.  The last job I had was way too stressful and that's why I did retire.

50 and 70 aren't really in the same age group and usually don't have anywhere close to the same limitations

People can do what they want as long as they don't have any physical or mental limitations holding them back. Some people continue to work in the same field as they've always had and others go for less stress free jobs as they age so they just have something to do

Most 50 year old are still working full time jobs in a variety of fields. It's usually 60s when people start to retire

Any job you are physically and mentally able to do if you need the money if you don't then retire and let the younger generation have the jobs

My father worked until he was 78, he started working at Proctor & Gamble when he was in his late 60s & retired, just for something to do... at the time they did their own resets/stocking/inventory checking in stores.  It was a good job, they paid decent like $12+ an hour, hours were flexible & got my father out & about -- they had stock options & great Christmas present packages too.   It's too bad they phased out that job & gave it to another company.

50 still is young, so is 70... if you are in healthy condition.  Age doesn't matter as much as health restrictions.    Life isn't over until it's over.

Depends upon what their level of mobility and health is......that is what would determine what kind of job is good for them.  I think AARP's website has some good advice and information regarding such matters.

I think a good job would be customer service. Like at Walmart, greeting customers.

definitely a job where they don't have to stand for too many hours, as that is hard for younger people too...
something that is not too hard and not too tiring... (easy uh?)

something like a call center experience maybe

Sewing companies, they just sit and sew cloths or just fold stuff most of the time easy on the body.

I've also seen senior citizens working as Walmart greeters and in McDonald's. That seems like a lot of standing for an older person to me. I think a lot of them would probably like a job doing online work if they knew about it. But some older folks like the physical activity because it keeps them young.

Any type of work would be ideal for them.  50 is not that old.  I know people who are 70 and working.  Heck I will likely have to work 3 weeks past when I die.  I think most people take what they can get as far as a job.  I hate my current job.  I use to like it but circumstances are causing me to dislike it more and more.  But the pay is good so until something changes I will continue to work there.

I wish I was still working. So does my husband. We both were self-employed and doing decently until he had a run of bad luck with his health at 59. He was hospitalized during the busiest season of the year and never really came back from that even though he worked until he was  66 and still would be working except for the federal doctor who thought being on warfarin was a problem and shut him down (Tri-axle dump in construction). Then at 60, I lost my 'employee" job, but was still doing fine with my private clients until I had my own health problem  and was hospitalized for 3 weeks. Everything came crashing down and had to give up my private clients. Neither of us were, and still aren't, ready to slow down but neither of us can find a normal job. We finally gave up at age 66. Now I do FC and a couple other sites, but only make peanuts, and he makes things from metal (he enjoys it) and fixes lawnmowers and tractors for his friends. He's so talented. Me? I love the computer, had my own since 1985 and worked from home since 1988  in respectable jobs.

I am doing ok with surveys etc, though not terrific.

I am 74. I am not ill or disabled, but have some health issues and life issues that make it difficult to work a regular job (like night-blind, old car, my pkg lot at my apt building never gets cleared or salted enough etc).

This has been a great month for me with cashouts and the timing of that is perfect.

We do what we can, when we can, where we can. It is a very personal selection.

Depends on what you can and want to do.  Companies in fast food and retail is always hiring. Or, try a temp agency.

Hello! :D :)

I think only the individual can answer that. We all are different and capable of different things base on how we lived our life. For me I don't ever plan to retire as I want to work in my business right until I take my last breath. I believe the ideal job won't be like a job at all, it would more like be a hobby that you are getting paid for. I believe loving what you do is a most as most of us spend most of our life working, love your life enough to live it!  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:
