Title: People calling your phone
Post by: countrygirl12 on November 23, 2017, 06:08:44 am
I have noticed people get too upset about someone calling their phone number.  I called my cousin (or tried to) last night. Somewhat of an emergency call.  I called her cell first and she didn't answer so I called her home phone number.  She lives in another state.  I didn't know she had got rid of the home phone because I always communicate via cell.

Anyway, the home ph number I called the person who has that number now finally answers IN A VERY ANNOYED TONE (I assume because she didn't recognize the number and thought I had to be satan) and when I asked for my cousin she says "WRONG NUMBER" and hangs up.

I have seen online where people rant and rave about people calling "their number" and why are you calling "my number". I realize it is your phone number but get a grip.  It is not the same as someone walking in to your house uninvited.  It is a phone number.  Anybody can dial a wrong number.  I get a phone call every Sunday or every other Sunday from an elderly lady who asks for the same person every time.  "I believe you have the wrong number" and she apologizes.  Not a big deal.

Someone calling you and trying to scam you is different.  Not the same thing.  But every call you get from a number you do not know is not someone trying to scam you.

I do hate when unknown numbers call me but I'm a weird case, I happen to hate phonecalls, lol. There's no need to be rude if it's a wrong number though. Some elementary school used to call me constantly about "my daughter" no matter how many times I explained they had somehow gotten a wrong number on file. It got funny after a while. That kid got up to some shenanigans.

But the thing with that is the "parent" may miss an important call.  I would have called the school and asked for the principal and told them you have the wrong number and need to fix this so the parent can get phone calls about their child.

I had a doctor office that kept calling me leaving personal messages about a man on my answering machine.  They kept saying well this is the number he left for us to call.  I called and asked for a manager and informed her that if I can find that man I will call him and tell him all the stuff I now know about him (none he would want to get out) and that I have told your office more than once you have the wrong number and you keep leaving detailed messages about test results on my machine.  So now can you take MY number that I have had for over 10 years off your list?  That was the last call I got from them. haha

Even the telemarketing jobs - it is just people trying to earn a living.  Don't answer the phone and go on with life.  There is just no need to be mean or cuss these people.  Unless they keep calling after you tell them you are not interested.  Idk.  It bugs me at times but not to the extremes of some people.  Just look at these public sites like whocallsme.com or something like that and read the comments.  You would think that the person had knocked on their door and shot their dog in the head when they opened it. smh.  It is a phone call.  Not that big of a deal.

I don't understand how some people can be so mean over a wrong number.   ??? ??? ??? ??? They should be nice about certain phone calls.   :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

I agree with you that people shouldn't get so annoyed when someone they don't know calls "their number." If someone keeps trying to call me with a phone number I don't recognize, I'll generally answer to make sure it's not an emergency. If it's somebody who's got the wrong number, I just say, "Wrong number." No big deal!

But I do remember that when I was young, when your phone rang you ALWAYS answered it, #1 because there was no caller ID, and #2 because every time the phone rang it was usually a friend or family trying to get a hold of you. There wasn't much telemarketing when I was a young person, so a ringing phone was a little bit exciting back in those days.

The only times I get somewhat rude when answering a wrong number call is when the call woke me up.  I can't help it, I'm just not awake enough to say anything more than "Hello?  Wrong number." and hang up.

Any other times I'd be nicer, because I know the caller is probably embarrassed by the mistake.

Actually, I only have issues with telemarketers.  Regular legit people like family I am always glad they call.  It's why I leave my phone on all the time.  I get annoyed with my folks because they always have their's off and when I call them (especially in an emergency) I can't reach them.  When the phone goes off I just look at the number and if i don't recognize it I don't answer.  I figure if they are legit they will leave a message, in which case I add their number to my contacts.  If they aren't they won't and I block their number later.

I do not get many calls from people I don't know. However, I do get lots of telemarketers. I even put my number on the do not call registry. That did not help any.

Hello! :D :)

No I don't think you should be mad at a person for dialing the wrong number, nonetheless I can relate. For instance someone keep calling you over and over again so you accidentally let the wrong person have it. Or maybe she was just having a bad day, whatever the reason rudeness is never called for. :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:

We should all try to not be rude but the constant telemarketing calls can be very annoying

I do not answer phone calls from numbers that I do not recognize. I rarely answer calls from numbers that I do recognize. I am generally working or sleeping and figure if the reason for the call is important enough there will be a corresponding voice mail. I have the ability to determine the source of the call through software that I have through employment but really do not want waste time. Last week I was looking at a phone scam and wanted to know how someone could make money for merely calling you. Apparently some people, in this case Dominican Republicans, are able to purchase a phone number (that can be disguised to look like local number) that pays them a share of revenue for every call received. For instance, calling one of these numbers puts you through to a chain message that keeps you on the phone for at least one minute. For connecting you are charged twenty dollars (scammer gets five dollars) for an international connection and five dollars for every minute that the call is engaged (scammer keeps it all). The caller gets charged these amounts. I would not bother answering any unknown calls.

just add a answering machine to take care of those calls, all you have to do is delete the recordings...

I don't mind.  I have an Iphone so if the number I don't recognize pops up, I don't answer it.

See, I don't get that.  Why do you have to scream in their ear? There are legit telemarketers who are just doing a job. They are not trying to scam you.  Either do not answer or politely tell them you are not interested.

That's me.  If I don't know the number I don't answer.  I get upset with people who lie and say they are the IRS haha. I didn't answer a call a few days ago and googled the number and it was a guy from church. I called him back and yeah I admitted what I done. haha.  I added him to my contacts as well.

I agree with that.  If you have to block your name and number then I am not going to answer.

A lot of the calls are coming from other countries and apparently they do not have to abide by our do not call list.

I  a long time ago, had a nice little gift basket business, got going good enough i added a 800 number and the last 4 numbers  were GIFT !!  It was all well till a Insurance Company In FL  made a  mistake and printed their claim forms with my 800 number on it , so for the next 10 months i got hundreds of calls from people mad about there claims. My business was in my home and the number rang threw my home number ! What a night mare and back then 800 numbers were not cheap.  I have spent the most part of my life with goofy mix ups happening, you name it i bet its happened to me. I can't get mad any more over mix ups ..... i'd be mad all the time rather i now just laugh and tell people about it and make them laugh to tears!

I don't mind telemarketers, but I don't like scammers. I usually screen my phone calls, but it bugs me when I get a phone dcall from out of state and they won't leave a message, then they'll keep calling.

I don't answer unless I know the number,  I figure if it is not junk and something real/important they will leave a message.
