Title: Storage locker auctions
Post by: singletonb on December 27, 2017, 09:33:29 pm
I recently watched Storage Wars on tv. Has any of you ever attended one of these. Is it a good way to earn extra cash?

I have watched a few types of these shows. I haven't attended one of these live, but would be fun to see this show during the taping of them!

I did once.  The junk just went at too high a price.

I enjoy watching Storage Wars.   I would love to attend a storage auction just for fun.  It seems most on the show have stores where they sell the items.  I wouldn't want to wind up with a bunch of stuff and no way to get rid of it.

I've not been to a storage auction... that one thrift store that the one Brandi + husband own (or owned?) is like 20 minutes from my house.  I haven't been there though.

I was reading a few years ago, that Storage Wars is all scripted & the "unique" item in the locker are planted by the production crew in advance.  More reality fakeness... I stopped watching it after reading it, it ruined the show for me because now I can see where it is faked.

If you go & purchase a storage unit, report back your experience, it would be an interesting read i'm sure :)

The shows are all staged. I think in real life it would be way too much of a gamble. You'd probably get someone's old broken Ikea furniture and boxes of junk.

I went once. They didn't let you look through all of it.  So you didn't know what you were getting.

I probably would never spend money on this. If it is abandoned or someone does and it is just left and eventually sold then you could get something good.  Sometimes people have to move and put every thing in storage and for whatever reason don't go back to it.  Even if you just get a few electronics you could get your money back.  I am not sure how real these tv programs are though.

They are.  So are the cop shows and other stuff like Jerry Springer. They are all fake. Yeah that will make some people mad haha. But you could get something worth some money. I know a woman that I use to go to church with that was at a yard sale where someone had died and they were selling the stuff in the house. She bought a vase for $5 and sold it on ebay for over $1000.  It was an antique.  She knew what she had found when she saw it. The people selling it didn't know what it was. Somehow I think that what she done was wrong. But that is just me. The people having the yard sale thought they were just selling "junk".

I have watched that show twice. Those people seem kind of obsessed with this stuff.

I've also heard that the show is staged...

I don't think it's a good way to earn extra cash, most likely you'll end up with junk and you'd have wasted both your money and your time in sorting through the junk.  I also don't like the idea of going through other people's belongings.

I used to watch the show a few years ago. I have never been to one but it would be cool.

I haven’t, but I’ve been very tempted. I don’t like that you only have a few days to clean out the entire storage and then find a place to dump all the unwanted items. It just seems like too much work for a risky investment.

I would think that it's probably not a good way to make extra cash. I think it would probably be like gambling: you usually win a little and lose a lot. I wouldn't be interested in that anyway. I've got enough of a "storage" problem at home with all of my stuff accumulated over the years, LOL! :peace:

I and my son  have been to a few. One time we went and they sold everything out of the storage and a few days later we got letters that they had sold the wrong one and  would buy back the  items.  My son  had bought some prints or we though were prints by  R. C. Gorman well there the real thing and he was going to just let them have them back for what  he paid and they paid  him 4 time what he had spent.  Another time  he and my hubby went to  some more storage  auctions.  Hubby got tire of them trying to get rid of  a room of  clothes and just bid $5 for it and  they sold it too him. I was a little ticked it took trips in y station wagon to bring them home. Well I washed them all up. Took out what y grandson  could wear and then took them all to the battered women's  shelter they gave a  receipt for $500.00 worth of clothing. Great took it off of our taxes. Did I mention  I washed 16 loads of clothes and  about 2/3 were still new and had tags on them.

You would have to be very lucky to make any money this way.  The lockers where you can see good stuff go for a lot of money.

I have only watched Storage Wars maybe two or three times.  I would never spend my money on that type of thing. Based on my luck in the lottery, I would either get an empty one (or almost) or a bunch of junk.  I would rather just go out and buy a scratch-off!

I really don't watch storage wars. But its funny in how some people bid on these lockers thinking that they have something valuable and they really don't

I have a family member who buys them and supposedly makes a ton of money off of them. For me, it just seems like a waste of time.

I have never watched, but I guess their are probably some good deals to be found, but if auction might be expensive.

I would like to try it sometime. I think I could sell the stuff I bought at the auction at a local flea market.
