Title: Well done NFL and Mr Trump !
Post by: sbenkoski on May 23, 2018, 12:05:18 pm
Unveiling a new policy after months of controversy and debate over players taking a knee or otherwise making statements during the national anthem, the NFL says all of its athletes and staff "shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem" if they're on the field.

"Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room or in a similar location off the field until after the Anthem has been performed," the league said in its new policy.

Many Americans Side With President Trump On NFL Anthem Protests
The possibility that the NFL might issue a blanket restriction on protests during the anthem has been discussed for months, and the buzz gained new momentum this week. But the NFL Players Association says, "The NFL chose to not consult the union in the development of this new 'policy.' "

The league's decision goes against what the NFL had told players "about the principles, values and patriotism of our league," the union said, adding that it will review the policy with an eye toward mounting challenges if elements of it contradict the current contract.

As news of the strict policy spread, Vice President Mike Pence tweeted, "#Winning" along with an American flag and a screenshot of a story about the NFL's anthem policy.

Athletes' behavior during the anthem and flag presentation became a national conversation and a political talking point after NFL players used the traditional opening of their games as a moment to protest police brutality and racism in America. That effort was led by former San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick, who took a knee during the anthem — and who went from being a starting quarterback to being an unsigned free agent in the spring of 2017.

Despite Kaepernick's absence from the game last season, NFL teams struggled to craft coherent responses to players' desires to highlight social issues — and they also faced intense public scrutiny, including from President Trump, who condemned players who refused to stand and urged fans to boycott the NFL until teams quashed the protests.

Saying that the new policy was meant to put the focus back on the game, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Thursday, "It was unfortunate that on-field protests created a false perception among many that thousands of NFL players were unpatriotic. This is not and was never the case."

NFL team owners voted to adopt the policy — and while the league says the changes "were unanimously approved by team owners who voted," it also notes that 49ers team owner Jed York abstained, at least in part because York wanted the players to be involved.

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: Players Cannot Disrespect Flag
THE TWO-WAY
Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: Players Cannot Disrespect Flag
The on-field protests have taken many forms, from players taking a knee to sitting on the bench as others stood on the sideline. In many cases, teams' players were split on the issue; in others, entire teams took a knee — as in September of 2017, when Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones linked arms with his players and took a knee. But one month later, Jones threatened players, saying if they "disrespect the flag," they would be benched.

The NFL's 32 teams can develop their own rules about the process, as long as they follow the new policy.

"A club will be fined by the League if its personnel are on the field and do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem," the NFL said.

In addition, the commissioner "will impose appropriate discipline on league personnel who do not stand and show respect," the league said.

Responses to the protests during the 2017 season ranged from dueling boycotts (from fans who don't like players protesting, and from others who don't like how teams treated Kaepernick); threats to strip the New Orleans Saints team of its tax breaks; and the decision by the founder of the Papa John's pizza chain, a longtime NFL advertiser, to step down as CEO after saying the NFL had hurt his business by not resolving what he called a "debacle."

In recent months, Kaepernick has been pursuing a collusion case against the NFL, accusing teams of banding together to keep him from being employed in the league. This week, a report emerged that his attorneys' investigation found documents that backed up his claim that, as he neared 30 years old last year, he was good enough not only to play in the NFL, but to start.

Eric Reid, who was the first player to kneel alongside Kaepernick as his teammate in San Francisco, says he's also being punished for that practice, which he continued last season. At 26, he has gone unsigned despite starting at safety for five years; earlier this month, Reid filed a grievance against the NFL and its teams.

"We chose to kneel because it's a respectful gesture," Reid wrote in an editorial for The New York Times last fall. "I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy. It baffles me that our protest is still being misconstrued as disrespectful to the country, flag and military personnel."

The NFL Players Association says that its members "have shown their patriotism through their social activism, their community service, in support of our military and law enforcement and yes, through their protests to raise awareness about the issues they care about."

it is about time they are doing something. I thought it was ridiculous in the first place. and then little kids starting doing it. If I was the coach, I would have benched him :peace:

I totally agree.  But now the thing is will the ones who still are disrespectful be punished? I think if they refuse to stand they need to be banned from that game.  If too many are banned then they forfeit the game and the other team gets the win.

If the same player is stupid for a second game then kick him off the team!

Considering that the military had to PAY the NFL for these "patriotic" displays in the first place, I don't think this is so much about patriotism as it is about money.

It was not about disrespecting the flag.  You take a knee when a player is injured and right now the country is injured. I do not agree with the decision.

Kapernick started the whole thing. He was disrespecting the flag, the police (wearing pigs socks), and this country. The sports agenda is no place for politics. People went to these games to enjoy themselves not have disrespect stare them in the face.

i think they will be fined if they do it on the field now and I think it's about time. Would your employer allow you to do something like that on their time? This is what some people don't understand. The NFL is an employer. It's quite a difference.

Guess the NFL was losing too much money. The naysayers are stating their First Amendment rights are being stepped on. That's a bunch of bull. They can still protest as long as it's on their OWN time. Those who took to a knee did so on the clock. I don't know any employer who allows protests on their dime, do you?

i'll get off my soapbox for now. :)

It's a classy resolution, but the NFL just came out and said that there was "no official vote" by the owners. I'm concerned to see what the NFLPA has to say about this.

I agree. They use that platform to draw attn to police brutality etc.And NFL worries about the buck. Then you get the chain reaction from nationalism.....some domino effect.

The Buffalo Springfield band in the 60s sang the song "For what its worth".Excellent line in the song.Nobodys right if everyone is wrong.

They were "taking a knee" to protest against the country aka the flag. You want to protest then fine protest all you want but show some friggin respect when the National Anthem is played.

And the country is not injured.  Things are better right now than they have been in a long time.  Well aside from the pansie snowflakes who are offended and cry about everything and want everything catered to them.

There are certain ways you are suppose to act when the flag is presented and the anthem is being sung.  Playing on your cell phone and kneeling is not one of them. You want to protest something stupid then find another way to do it.  And blacks have equality.  I am so sick of this.  There have been 3 that is THREE white men shot in my area and not a word was said.  Other than the initial report.  NOBODY cared.  WHY? Because it was a WHITE man that died.

You don't want to get shot by the police then don't break the law. Don't point a gun at them. Don't swing a knife at them. Don't try to hit them with your car.  Oh idk don't be an idiot!

That is supposedly what they were protesting.

I believe a lot of ppl have boycotted watching the NFL, including my husband and I due to this controversy.  That's probably why they have now decided to take this stand instead of keep losing viewers.  Kapernick should have been fired and that would perhaps ended it!  I feel if you don't respect our flag and therefore our Country, you should leave this Country and lose your citizenship.  Doubt most of the ones taking the knee even had a position they supported; just an attention getter.  Disgusting!  Not sure even now we'll go back to watching the games.

I am glad they finally did something.  While I can applaud people for believing and taking a stand in those beliefs, I believe there is an appropriate time and place for such actions and a football field as the national anthem plays is not one of them.  When you are out on a field such that, you are not representing yourself to the public but your team.  What I can't believe his why Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid don't understand why their actions were seen as disrespectful.  How could they have been seen as anything but disrespectful?  While you don't have to place your hand on your heart, or speak the words, you have to stand.  It is a sign of respect.  Therefore, if you don't, of course it is going to be seen as the opposite.  Any time, for any reason during a national anthem is no place to make a stand for personal, and/or political views.  Yes, this country has flaws.  But it is still a moment to honor the country in which you choose to live and those that died and still die to defend it and I just don't mean our military.  I also mean ordinary people like law enforcement, doctors, fire fighters etc. and our Civil Rights leaders.  I stand to also think about them, people like Martin Luther King Jr., who died fighting to make this country better than it was.  When I see people take a knee I think about how disrespectful it is to someone like King.  So I applaud the NFL for finally taking a stand and making anyone whom is out there representing their team on the field stand to respect the country they're playing the sport for.  What is sad is that they had to do this.

Seen on a t-shirt:

"You don't watch the NFL for the anthem
So if you don't like the kneeling
 Just ignore it
Like you do racism and police brutality."

And Martin Luther King was murdered by the US government.

I think that the National Football League did this in answer to falling numbers in viewership. It was all about the money. I have decreased the amount of time spent watching football not because of the perceived reason for protesting of disrespect for the flag but because I wanted to watch football and it was turning into a venue for something other than football. The NFL's latest stance is weak and subjective at best, utilizing the words "possibly" and "might happen" way too much, most likely to avoid using it when they see the wave of law suits tied to inhibiting free speech. An NBA coach, in support of free speech, stated that the kneeling was in protest police brutality and racial inequality-not disrespecting the flag or military, which is what cheeto decided to make it about in his usual manner of sensationalizing events for his own personal gain.

Proverbs 14:12 states: “There exists a way that is upright before a man, but the ways of death are the end of it afterward.”

I know you dont acknowledge Gods name. There is a theme through-out the bible that says,Jehovah will NOT share his glory to any other false gods.

The bible clearly says Satan is the ruler of this system right now.He offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world for an act of worship.Jesus told him Jehovah is GOD and refused.

3 Hebrews refused to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzer idols and were saved by God when he tried to kill them.

Rev 4:11 reads Jehovah is only 1 that deserves that honor cos HE created life <us>

You seem to only know 1 verse in the bible.I suggest you make yourself famiiar with the rest of the book and be taught by Gods people...NOT Babylon the Great.

Over 20 million attend The Memorial each yr worldwide.A command Jesus gave after he dismissed Judas.Do you get at least 20 to attend a bingo game at your Babylonish church?

Dont flatter yourself. If Gods people see you arent interested in the truth, they will obey Jesus command and dust their feet and bid you good-day...so save your effort buying more flags.
