Miss America is waving goodbye to its swimsuit competition, scrapping one of its most iconic elements in an attempt to shift the annual ceremony's emphasis away from its longtime focus on contestants' physical beauty.
"We are no longer a pageant, we are a competition," Gretchen Carlson, the chairwoman of Miss America's board of directors, announced Tuesday on ABC's Good Morning America. "We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance.

Gosh, you were getting ready for the competition too? I figured it was time for a "senior" competition. You know that would have a big audience! Lots of cellulite and fallen tats! Appeals to some of the "eccentrics" out there!!

I ain't watching anymore.... :bad:
Never did anyway.... ;)

Hey now i never had no kids and used to run from 6am till midnight , i have no fallen anything. Just a ugly scar on my calf what left of it . That cost me 1/2 a mill when its all said and done , better than a wooden peg though !
I'm 60 and buy july 4th i'll be sporting a two piece! And not bloomer pants !

It has always been a competition. Wonder what it will be replaced with? I have not watched the beauty pageants in years. I think it is wrong to put so much emphasis on what a woman looks like. And if you don't look like this then you aren't pretty. Just my opinion.

What a shame! Oh well, I have not watched the Miss America show in ages! lol ... And you sport that 2 piece girl! You deserve it! :)

They've been trying to get rid of the swimsuit competition for years. They even had viewers vote on it, but they overwhelmingly voted in favor of keeping it. I guess it is a bit sexist to have women strutting around in their beach apparel, but aren't beauty pageants sexist in general? Yes, I know they call it a "scholarship pageant" now, but a significant part of it will always be about the women's looks.
-
I didn’t know miss America was still around.
-
It is about time! They should be judged on their intelligence and not how good they look a swimsuit. Miss USA and Miss Universe need to follow suit
-
I never watched the petition/competition but I think it's progress that they're saying farewell to the swim suit section.
-
I can imagine male viewers having a problem with this though :D
-
I am totally happy with this change. Give women a chance to show who they really are, not just how they look in a swim suit.
-
My only problem with this is, what will they do in its place? An IQ test? I watch the Miss America pageant as entertainment, and I'm hoping they find something else entertaining (even explaining their platform for America a little more) to take its place.
-
I wonder what they'll replace it with too.

stupid, it's a beauty contest, I thought beauty contest is for outside and inside lol. So many people are just as beautiful outside today
-
Who wants to watch half-naked people in a swimming suit competition?
-
Apparently they have said farewell to a lot of things. :(

They should also say farewell to their ratings.
-
If it were a male competition the men would gladly strut around in their speedos to display their fitness.
-
What they need to do is cancel this entire show!

lol. Yep! I think recent decisions are going to put them so far down that no network will carry it.

Everyone must be politically correct now days.
-
The bathing suit portion wasn't just about beauty.... it was about self-discipline & choosing a healthy lifestyle. Those women worked out hours, they sacrificed eating whatever they wanted & focused on eating what was healthy to maintain those bodies.
Now I guess they can just sit on the couch, eat nachos, and binge watch netflix.... and still win.
-
I never watch it anyway and I don't think they should have it to begin with. It is still a contest of favoritism no matter what the competition is.
-
Well, you can kiss the ratings goodbye.
Seriously though, it's this PC culture. Everything has become more puritanical than religion has ever made society. Feminists fear the dreaded "Male Gaze". So no more swimsuits. It's just ridiculous.
-
I might get boo'd, but I think this is PC gone too far.
-
another place for pc to take over
-
Everything changes
-
I never watched anyway, but even as a woman I'm more leaning towards: let them do what they want, if you don't like it, change the channel. We all have known what a miss America pageant entails for years. Is it really that sexist? These women are not being forced to participate. Go start your own Intelligence Pageant if you have a problem with it.
-
Good Move. Lets pay more attention to the mind and heart than the body :D
-
This sounds like a joke to me. I have never paid any attention to it anyway, but I wonder how they react when their ratings tank. I'm sure they think this is a good public relations move and they will make more money by doing this. I just see it backfiring in a big way.

It's funny because the Swimsuit competition was the most famous competition in Miss America. Honestly, I think most people watched for that. Historically speaking, Miss America was founded as a contest for bathing beauties of the Roaring Twenties.
The thing is, there is a scandal going on surrounding this because apparently, Gretchen Carlson, who just took over as chair, in the wake of the #MeToo movement decided to dump the Swimsuit competition without notifying the other board members. Depending on your source, the board members agreed, but they now question Ms Carlson's leadership and there is a rift now within the members. Not a good sign for the outcome of the 'Beauty' Pageant since the theme has shifted from physical beauty to internal beauty.
