IHOP's bold move to advertise its burgers has come full circle. It created media attention last June when making the public aware of the pancake chain's other menu items, specifically, burgers by changing the signage to read "IHOb." Did anyone go for their burgers? Or, did you see through the marketing gimmick? Anybody hungry for pancakes about now??
-
I could go for some pancakes. I've never been there.
-
I never knew of the name changed from IHOP to IHOb.
It's been years since I was at an IHOP, so the name change or marketing gimmick didn't have an effect on me.
-
This name game change was a total waste! What total losers that did this! Yeah, I want them in charge of my country and my life... NOT!
-
i heard about the burger thing...didnt know about name change
-
I'll still try to think about this place when I want a burger and not just a pancake. All those burgers were basically always there anyway.
-
I told my daughter that they more than likely will be changing their name back, why mess with a name that has been around for years, International House of Burgers, please, let it stay with the Pancakes.
-
I didn’t know they have even changed their name. But good call to go back to what they already had as a name.
-
It gave them some cheap (in terms of taste) publicity. Didn't make me visit a restaurant I haven't eaten at since I was a young teen.
Oh well, I guess they thought it was a good idea.
-
It was obvious they were going to, eventually. The "we're all about the burgers now!" was just a promotion. :D
-
like IHOP better stick to what has worked for many years
-
Oh wow, I never knew they changed the name.
-
haven't been there in so long and change had no impact on me lol
-
Yeah that was so stupid. Leave well enough alone. Who did go there for hamburgers. L9ve the pancakes.
-
Ihop announced the day they switched it to Ihob that it was only temporary to promote their burgers... then they'd go back to Ihop. So it was expected.
-
Some companies will do anything to get people into their business.
-
There were some funny reactions to the name change early in June during the rollout.
One came from Chiquita:
🍌pancakes, 🍌syrup, 🍌French toast, 🍌crepes...We LOVE where you’re going with this @IHOP 🎉 ;) #InternationalHouseofBananas #IHOB
-
Why bother changing the name?

Last June? As in a year ago? Or a couple weeks ago in June? Because that is the first I had heard of it.
I think they are foolish and the person in charge of their advertising has some mental issues. Changing the name of a company is a huge thing. Just leave it alone. Improve the quality of your product is you want returning customers. The closest one to me is about 45 minutes away. The last time we went in there we left before the food came. We had set there for over 30 minutes and then she goes to check on the food and she had not even turned the order in. We could hear them talking. So we just got up and left.

It was announced by IHOP on June 4, 2018; it was meant to be a 'temporary' change. Naturally, it created a media storm with lots of publicity. Lots of funny comments on social media came out of that. No, they were not going to go through with a complete name change or rebrand.
I would add that I'm not surprised that any of a number of IHOPs might be exposed for having some lousy service or food simply because there are bound to be some underperforming locations in a chain of its size. I know I haven't been to IHOP in about 8 years or so, but the one I visit is in a high-traffic location about 15 minutes away and the food and service were always good (probably due to heavy volume of 18-wheelers on the nearby interstate).
-
I was sure hoping that was just a joke or something I love their pancakes and I'm not big on burgers so I'm so glad they switch back to IHOP!
-
This had to be one of the worst marketing ideas ever. Who is going to IHOP for burgers. Stick with what you know.
-
I have never even been. I don't believe there is one in my area. I would like to try it out someday though.
-
That was just stupid. I don't think anyone paid any attention to that nonsense anyway.
-
I heard it was just a promotional gimic. I like IHOP but don't care for their pancakes.
-
Personally I thought it wasn't gonna work as IHOP has always been known for their pancakes however it is my understanding they do have very good burgers but I have never tried one as I always get pancakes if I go there so I guess that was the point eh? LOL
-
It was a tone of free publicity by everyone talking about it.
-
Yes, they just do it advertise there burger now back to pancake :)
-
yup I seen that commercial funny made me smile lol
-
lol that came and went, didn't really pay attention all that much honestly
-
i dont go to ihop for burgers i love breakfast
-
i laugh at the new commercial that it was just to sell their burgers.
-
I did see the name change but never did pay attention to why they did it. I have not been to an IHOP in years.
-
This was a lame idea. I rarely go there and the name change did not entice me. I already know their burgers are gross.
-
I knew Ihop would switch back when it said only a limited number of stores would change to Ihob for only a little while.
-
As usual, I'm among the last to know breaking news. But, fortunately, I don't really care anyway. :bs:
:fish:
-
hehehe who knew this would cause such a stir in the court of public opinion and in the news?!? ;) ;D
-
Yeah now they are saying it was a marketing tool.
-
Do not see them as a big burger restaurant only ever order breakfast there.
-
Yes because ihob sounded terrible.
-
This name game change was a total waste! What total losers that did this! Yeah, I want them in charge of my country and my life... NOT!
Hmm....What?
-
Yeah now they are saying it was a marketing tool.
It was an obvious marketing gimmick from the beginning.
-
It was a marketing tool from the start or they would all have changed the name. They did get a lot of publicity for it though.
-
Heads up everybody! For IHOP's 60th anniversary they are serving up their short stack pancakes for 60¢ TODAY! With the recent publicity on their name change still rolling around in the media this will be a good time for an anniversary event.
-
Clever Ad Trick!
-
I really don't care the name change as long as the food taste great!
-
It backfired. All other burger chains started mocking them and I think they realized it. If they had changed it to "International House of Breakfast" like everyone thought they were going for, then that would've made more sense. It would've marketed that they do more than just pancakes.
-
In terms of marketing, the only loser was them. Wendy's Twitter account was SAVAGE.
-
It may have been the dumbest thing since coke tried to go to new coke.

Everyone knows that a "pancake" house does breakfast, so that really doesn't make any sense. This was about promoting more that they did more than just breakfast. It worked and got people talking. A few twitter accounts trying to poke fun at IHOP just promoted the gimmick even more.
-
Fun promo.
-
I almost went for the first time the other day. Maybe one day I will finally try Ihop. Lol.
-
I saw through the gimmick but it doesn't matter. They accomplished exactly what they wanted to. They brought a ton of attention to their company and I would guess that they got a good bit more business in the process.
-
don't like IHOP anyway. go to dennys and get a better breakfast for the same amount of money and twice bigger pancakes !!
-
They said it was a hoax to get people to buy their burgers...
-
I knew the name change wasn't going to last. It sounded silly and how are they going to get people into hamburgers when they are famous for pancakes and breakfast. It was a silly thought who ever came up with it.
-
i have never had a burger at IHOP
-
I didn't realize they had changed the name. I wouldn't go to IHOP for a burger anyways :P
-
there the same as they always were
-
I didn't know it had changed to Ihob. I thought they were running the Ad as a joke for a few days. I never took what the Ad said seriously. I always felt it was a Fad. As it turn out it was.
-
I rarely go to IHOP and have only had breakfast there but my food never arrives hot.
-
it was a dumb advertising ploy. They will always be breakfast to me.
-
I am SO glad that the decided to revert back to the "IHOP" name. If you are known by one name for several years (and you are successful from a business perspective), why change it?! In other words, do not fix what is not broken. Besides, IHOB sounds ridiculous.
-
After a temporary switch to "IHOb" last month, with the "b" standing for burgers. ... Reverting to the original name. It was a terrible publicity blunder. Stick to what works...IHOP!
-
Well, how would you tell the joke about the one-legged waiters and waitresses if they didn't work at IHOP?
:fish:
-
I thought the name change was completely crazy to begin with and did not see it as an advertising gimmick to market their burgers. They got over on me, I guess! However, maybe not, because I never went and had one of their burgers to this day. i really just don't think of them for burgers. To me, they are breakfast!
-
This had to be one of the most bizarre ideas for a promo.
-
I had a hard time figuring out what they were doing with the name change and now its back to the original. What a confusing situation. We never go there anyway ::)
-
Burger sales grew by 4 times after the campaign and they have maintained that level since. In other words, it worked.
-
I would like to try some of their burgers. They look pretty good and they have a lot of them for $6.99.
-
 :glasses-nerdy: :silly: I think that the name change is crazy. I go there for the pancakes. I knew they have other foods besides the pancakes. Its like another burger joint. Why not be a pancake joint? :glasses-nerdy: :silly:
-
Yeah the name change didn't last long but it was a good try
-
it was a stunt to promote their burgers. anyway i like the name ihop

Hello! :D :)
I never ate at an IHop before even though there is one near my house. Why change your name just to promote a new product that doesn't make any sense? Although one day I would love to try their pancakes and see how great they are. :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose: :rose:  :rose:  :rose:
-
lol that was such a silly thing
-
I thought it was pretty silly for them to change their name. Smart move to change it back.
-
It seemed kind of funny when they first said they were changing their name. I think that was to promote that they were selling burgers. I think they still are selling burgers but mostly pancakes :)
-
Name change doesn't bother me one way or the other I do like some of their commercials really starts hunger trantrums
-
i did not know any of this until now i always seen it as ihop
