I had to say goodbye yesterday to my 12-1/2 year old dog. He took a turn for the worse over the weekend and didn't have the strength (or will?) to recover. He could no longer sit or stand but still had his appetite. So I spent his last two days spoiling him with hot dogs and eggs and cheese and chocolate chip cookies and ice cream and pepperoni pizza and cheeseburgers.
He was a big boy - 125 pounds - and took a big piece of my heart with him. We did our best to give him a good long life. I hope he was happy.

Not being mean but the food you fed him is enough to kill him. I had to let mine go a week ago. I have learned so much over the past few weeks. You should never feed your dog table scraps. I do not plan to ever have another dog but if I do I will never let him/her eat table scraps. It causes pancreatitis and other serious problems. :(

So sorry for your loss. They are definitely part of our family and you showed your love for him. :dog:

I didn't feed him all that food on a regular basis. It was his last day with us. I wanted to spoil him before the vet arrived. Not really concerned with pancreatitis at that point. ::)

I am so sorry for your loss. It's difficult to lose a pet. I'm happy you had him for so many years and I'm sure he brought you lots of love, happiness and probably some laughter. I think it's fine you spoiled him for his last day with you. I see nothing wrong with it, you knew it was his last day. Please don't let what others say hurt you. If you had him for over 12 years I'm sure you were a great pet parent. I hope the happy memories of your beloved pet will help ease your pain.

Cherish the memories and the fun time you had together.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. It’s never easy to lose a pet no matter how old they are. Just think about the good times you had together. It was great you spoiled him at the end, I’m sure that was a great last bonding experience. He’s waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.

Its been a month now since our dog passed away.My wife and i are still crying.Just know that you have much support in understanding how you feel.I dont wanna suggest to go get another one cos as much as i would love to i dont wanna go thru grief again.
I was thinking about joining ASPCA to still be involved without being too close.Just a thought.

Sorry about losing your dog. I learned a pet is just like a member of the family and will always be missed when they are gone.

So sorry for the loss of your fur baby. :(

Sorry for your loss.

Thank you everyone! It has been difficult to be without him, but it was worse to watch him suffer with his weakness and pain. I asked my husband why we keep doing this to ourselves, why we bring a pet into our lives and fall in love with them and then lose them after only a few short years. He said it's the price of unconditional love. It's true. And I will do it all over again someday.
Is it weird that, since my other dog passed away 3 years ago, I downloaded a diary app and write letters to my deceased dogs? I mean I know they're gone, and of course they could never read anyway (lol), but I guess it's therapeutic for me.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. We get so close to our furry friends that they become a part of the family. It has been three years since our Tommy passed away. I still miss him terribly to this day. He was so much comfort and joy for our empty house!

I am so sorry for your loss. I feel your pain ... I have lost many animals, dogs and cats and it breaks my heart every time. My animals are my furry kids.

Aw, so sorry. It hurts a lot. We lost our black Lab, Abbym 7 years ago from acute renal failure. She was 7. Before that, we had Hobie who developed cancer in his front right leg/shoulder and the vet wouldn't just amputate, said there was no hope. He was 10. I also lost Patches, our cat, almost at the same time through a tumor. Vet said no surgery would help. I still cry over all of them.
So now I have feral cats and try not to get too close. My avatar is the one we house trained but she got so sick, she turned nasty and attacked us. i opened the door and she left never to be seen again. I have 4 ferals now, 3 that are friendly and 1 who never comes close which is okay with me. If they would leave and find someplace else to live, I'd be fine with it. It wouldn't hurt as much but there won't be any more close pets for us.

So sorry to hear about your loss. Twelve years is a long time. We had a Golden Retriever, Misha Marie, that passed eight years ago and not a day goes by without a thought or memory of her crossing our minds. We lasted two weeks before we got another Golden Retriever and ended up getting another one a year later. The two new Goldens (Chevalier and Chantelle) are a source of constant and enjoyment and entertainment. I volunteer to walk dogs for a few hours a week at a no-kill facility. Perhaps volunteering at a dog shelter might help you overcome your loss quicker. Bravo for giving your dog a king/queen's feast before he/she moved on! I'm sure that your dog knew how much you lover her/him and your feast probably helped ease the transition to heaven. I hope that your recovery is fast.

So sorry for your loss. I hope you can find another dog in time who is worthy of your love. I'm a cat person -- I have 3! -- and they provide so much joy to my life. Even just giving them their morning meal is a highlight of my day.

So sorry for your loss; we're fixing to face the same issue with our 18 year old dog.

I know that pets hold a very special place in our family and our hearts much of the time. I would have done the exact same thing as you if I knew my pet had few days left on earth. i would have spoiled him as much as I could. I'm sure everything you did was with love. Good for you!

:-( So sorry.

I feel your loss believe me I had to have my little eight pound shih tzu put to sleep a few months ago. Her name was baby and she truly was like my baby. She stuck to me like glue and waited by the front door for me if I had to go out without her. I miss her terribly. Well I am truly sorry for the loss of your dog. :(
-
Oh,sorry to hear that.it must be hard to lose a dog.I had a hamster and it was difficult after only one year.
-
So sorry. Mine all aged out and so I don't want to get another one anymore. It hurts so bad to lose them. :sad1:

A lot of people do not know how dangerous it is to feed table scraps to pets. I still wouldn't have given him stuff that could make him have a stomach ache but it was your choice and if he wanted to eat it then okay. I don't think mine would have ate chocolate. I know a woman who gave her dog half a bag of Hershey kisses and the dog died the next day. She apparently didn't know not to give the dog chocolate.

I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds like you were a wonderful doggy mommy and I'm sure you gave your baby the best life possible!

 :glasses-nerdy: :silly: Sad :( for your loss of a loved pet. I know the feeling of losing a loved pet. The pet/pets would be missed a bunch. No other pet could be the same as the one/ones lost. :glasses-nerdy: :silly:

I am sad for you too. :peace:

So sorry for our loss. :( :rose:

Sorry for your loss. Have been in your situation and it is hard. I have two more now and not looking forward to going thru that again.
-
Thank you everyone for your kind words!
My dog's ashes were hand delivered yesterday. They came in a carved wooden box (urn?). I had no idea - it was a pleasant surprise! As difficult as it is saying goodbye, the home service we used was wonderful. It was expensive but worth it, and I would use them again.
My apartment feels strange and empty now. I live literally across the street from a dog park, so every time I look out the window, I see people coming and going, dogs barking and playing. It's hard to watch. I miss my boy.

You always remember your fur babies, sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry to hear this :( I've lost many pets and it hurts so badly every time. I still think of my old pets from time to time and how I miss them. But I try to remember they all had a great, long life and I believe they're in a better place. Stay strong

I know how it is too lose a pet. It is such a sad thing. I hope you feel better soon and maybe be able to get a new dog one day. :dog:
