Title: Deer in the Road
Post by: alina6 on October 29, 2018, 06:43:53 pm
I live in a suburban community and lately there have been deer running everywhere. Every night is a near miss. Any ideas on how to avoid a collision (outside of not driving anymore :))

I live in a rural area where deer are common. I drive the speed limit and am very careful, especially at night. They travel in groups, so if you see one in the road there may be more waiting to cross.

You should contact wildlife police for help in dealing with this issue. Maybe changes should be done like lower the speed limit through these roads.

:pumpkin:   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:  Drive slow and the deer hang together in packs, if you see one you might see another. They make a deer repellent for your car, unsure how well this works.   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:

When man takes over their habitat, what would you expect? It's common to find them in our yard and garden, so encountering them on the roads should be no surprise. My wife has hit several in the 50 years we have lived in Oregon and I even hit one at 80 miles an hour on an Illinois freeway. The highway patrol told us it was common during rutting season.

Just keep an eye out for them, always look to sides, and ahead of you, deers usually will be standing on the side of the road, if you see them, blow the car horn, they will run back.

Where we live there are always deer around.  it's common to see them in our backyard and street.  Just drive slow and look for them, especially at dawn and dusk.

We watch for them they are creatures of habit and usual crass at the same time of day and same place all the time.

How much damage did you do to your car when you hit one going 80? I hit one when I slammed on my breaks (maybe doing 35) and was almost stopped when I hit him and it still smashed in my grill and I pulled deer hair out of the car for weeks. The deer just looked at me and bounded away.

That is very interesting, I never knew that.

I hit one on the Interstate and it totaled the car.  It was an old car so the total value wasn't high, but when the front end gets smashed, the hood buckles, the headlights get taken out and the windshield gets cracked, insurance totals it.

Three years ago my wife's new car was totaled because a deer ran into it. Ruined the steering, trashed the fender,/bumper and hood, through the alignment out-but the deer walked away. I took all kinds of defensive driving courses as part of some weekend stints as a stock car and demolition driver. One of the key points brought up was to continue driving through crashes/animals at the same speed. Veering one way or another would statistically have you rolling your vehicle, locking up your brakes could have a similar affect or have you run the risk of getting rear ended, and slowing down increased the chance of your strike causing the stricken object to fly in to your windshield. Two years ago I came across a herd of deer in an old jeep and ended up killing one. I lived.

I am so glad this has never happened to me. I don't think there are any deer in the area in which I live. That would really make me sad to hit a deer.

Just today my mom was telling me how she had seen three deceased deer in one area on the road. It breaks my heart. People are always ruining the way wildlife live, it makes me sick. I am glad I don't drive and have no plans to. I would be beside myself if I accidentally hit anyone.  :(

It was a rental car, so I just turned it back in and didn't see a quote, but I am sure it was several thousand. I assure you this deer did not bound far, although he did leave the scene somehow.

It's mating season for the deer, especially by me. The month of October is horrible with all the dead deer I see on the side of the road and gun shots being fired. :(

You will usually find them on the move around dawn and dusk,  but anytime if they get flushed by dogs or scared by people etc

I heard that avoiding them is the worst thing to do because of the possibility of rolling the car. Where were you a stock car driver?

Update: this morning I came upon police cars in the middle of the road blocking traffic. One of the police officers was "removing" a deer which had just been hit. The car who hit him was on the side of the road with the front end bashed in.

Having lived in an area where deer and elk are every where, you just have to drive a little slower and be extra careful.  But slaming ont he brakes and swerving are instincts you should not swerve, change speed or slam on the brakes, just drive straight through and pray for the best.

I think the only thing you can do is be careful and drive slowly, especially at night. Turning on high beams when it's really dark out can help, too.

That's very dangerous, even you lower the speed it would still be very bad to hit the deer, is there anything they can do about it? like fence.

I live in  Michigan, and the deer are certainly running wild here too. I drive slower and really pay attention to my surroundings.  And keep my fingers crossed.

We have 5 deer that have been coming into our yard all summer.  One is a mom and 2 young ones. I think mom was part of the 2 young ones from last year. This was the first year we've had deer in our yard.  It was nice seeing them every day eating our weeds. Less we had to do. LOL This week, hubby was going to the store and saw one of them dead on the side of the highway. That's sad but it happens every year when the deer are in rut.

We do have some deer around where I live.  I am always scared one is going to run out in front of me when I'm driving.  I did know an elderly couple who use to live in an area that deer were really bad.  They had something on their bumper that would alert them if there were any around.

I see deer all the time when I'm driving.  I've had a few close calls but I've never hit one.  The best way to avoid them is to stay straight and steady.  There are more wrecks from people trying to avoid them than there are from people hitting them.  Plus, your car will handle hitting them better this way.

I used to live out in the country and deer crossing the road was a definite problem and fox and bears - but didn't know how to avoid was just lucky I guess -  that thing the one reader put about a thing that emits a noise that deters them might be worth a try.

Pay careful attention when you are driving. If you find a deer is standing in the road in front of you, try flashing your brights. It might be enough motivation for it to move on.

Um, drive slowly. Or, if possible, take an alternate route that does not have a lot of deer present.

There are deer whistles you can stick in the grill, not sure if they work, we have hunting season now and same here deer at night ... stay home is my best defense  !!

^^^^This^^^^

Very simple attachment that you can put on your grille or front spoiler. They are small plastic devices that work as the wind passes through them, so your own driving speed is what activates them. You hear nothing and with the right placement you see nothing.

I had some years ago and never had any encounters with deer on the roadways while several friends and family members driving the same roads did. Could just be coincidence, but for a few dollars it wasn't a waste of money.

If you use them, don't expect to see a "reaction" from deer affected by them. Deer aren't going to approach your car, hear the repellent, and run off. If working properly - they simply won't approach at all.

I hate to tell you, but that is about the worst advice I have heard yet. Flashing lights will freeze them in their tracks, car horns will be ignored and you usually don't have that long anyway.

Deer are a real problem while driving in my area.  You never know when one will jump right in front of you.  We, too, had a lot of damage to our truck when a deer landed on it.  He must have been taking a bounding leap because it looked like he fell from the sky with no warning.  A few years ago, we tried the high frequency gadget that you attach to your car, and we didn't have any incidents while it was attached, but I read that you need to take them off and clean them. My husband was in this process over the bathroom sink when it fell down the drain. That was the end of the deer whistle, and our sink has never been the same.  Note to self: keep stopper in the drain when holding small objects above it.

It's one of those things where you will never know for 100% certainty if they worked or not because the very fact of them working is something that you cannot see/notice.  You can only know if they don't work in that one instance where you hit a deer.

It is hunting season so you will see more and more,so slow down and pay attention. They run in circles,so if you see them in front of somebody's car they could come back in front of your car.
