Title: Do you actually eat home-baked goods you get as gifts
Post by: pectacon on November 23, 2018, 12:28:52 pm
Do you actually eat the cookies or banana bread or whatever your neighbor/coworker gives you for the holidays, or just say thank you and then throw them out later?

If I don't know the person that well, part of me is always paranoid whether they washed their hands etc. when they made them.

I also have that thought while icing my own sugar cookies for the neighbors. "They'll probably just throw these out but oh well"

I guess it would depend on who gave it to me. If it were a close family member I would eat it.  If a co-worker gave me something I most likely would not eat it.  If a neighbor gave me something I would def throw it in the trash.

Ahhhhhh, a fellow germ-o-phobe!  I always wonder about the cleanliness of people who have prepared my food, even in a restaurant.  You don't know what's going on behind closed doors.  But then, I've never adhered to the five second rule, either, which many people will quote to me if they drop something on the floor and pick it up to eat it anyway!  Once my college daughter had her friends at our house and when one dropped an M&M on the floor, and picked it up to eat it,  I yelled at him, "Don't eat that!" and they all thought it was so funny.  Guess that's the way I was raised!

For the most part. I know the people and will eat their goodies. Just as  they will eat mine. In fact I am already getting request for for home backed goodies and candies. and it is not even Christmas yet, I have not even started. guess I had  better get the candies  down up soon as I  can keep them nice in the freezer. But the baked ones I make them just before I give them away.

Absolutely. Our neighbor brings us a homemade cheesecake and fudge around Christmas. It is wonderful.

We certainly eat them.  I don't ever remember receiving an eatable gift from someone I don't trust.

It depends on what is baked or cooked, sometimes I will not eat it, if it is too sweet etc..

:turkey:   :snowman:   :turkey:  Lucky for me I don't get to many baked goods as a gift. I don't bake for friends or coworkers. I'll buy something from the store vs making it myself. I don't have that kind of germ issue. I've eaten a bunch of pot lucks, that I don't worry that much about that to much.  :turkey:   :snowman:   :turkey:

I guess it would depend who gave them to me - most of the time I will at least try them to be polite and if they are good I will finish them :)

First off I have to tell you I love animals and they have free run of my home, but my cats are not allowed on my kitchen counters.   A few years ago one of my co workers brought rice crispy treats that she made.  Another co-worker took one, bit into it and pulled out a cat hair.  The girl who made them just laughed and said something like my cats love to sit on the counter and watch me.  After that I only eat things from people i know and trust.  I'm not about to find my cats hair in anything and I certainly don't want to find anyone's cats!

Hi,
Yes I do.  I love eating the cookies that my neighbor gives us every year.  Her cookies and baked goods are terrific.  Have a restful day!

I am not a big germ-a-phobia type person so I didn't even think about me not eating homemade food gifts or
about other people not wanting to eat homemade treats.  I guess I trust the friends and family I share treats with.
If I don't like the baked goodie, then I don't eat it.

Ewwww. I didn't know it was possible to train a cat not to go on counters, I thought that was just sort of the default in cat homes that you just have to accept that they'll be anywhere and everywhere. I love animals but that's one reason I'm not a cat person. My dogs are messy too but at least they're basically confined to the floor.

Wow interesting question - the only person who does this is my sister-in-law and I would definitely eat anything she made - now the new neighborhood I live in is wanting to do a cookie exchange and I don't know any of my neighbors really so I don't know how I feel about it.  But I think its a lovely idea you have.

I agree but that is not as bad as most people lick the spoon when they are doing stuff like stirring batter and put the spoon back in the batter or other disgusting stuff.  I was at a Christmas party once and the daughter was making some kind of cider and she was stirring it and she would taste it with the spoon she was stirring with and sip and slobber and the cider dripping back off the spoon into the pot.  Her momma thought it was funny.  I was beyond disgusting.

Another time I saw a girl (and again her mother thought this was fine and dandy) was tasting some dip and double dipping and bits of chip falling out of her mouth in to the dip and she just stirred it up like it was nothing.  I have to admit for the most part I do eat at work when they have finger foods.  I guess I don't think a lot about it.

I guess it would depend on WHO made it.

It depends on who makes it. Some people cannot cook and some people are not clean. So yeah, if I got home baked goods at work, I would nicely say that I want to share with others and leave it in the kitchen area.

It depends on who bakes them.  My younger brother's mother-in-law bakes awesome cookies each year and my 'second' mom is an avid baker so yes.  When they give me baked goods I eat them--sometimes by myself is they are way too good to share.

I don't receive food gifts any more.

Depends on the source, and I always did from a trusted friend or family member.

I am going to be the one making something to give this year....fudge :)

I don't normally receive baked goods as gifts, but if I did, of course I would eat it! Unless it is something I really don't like, and then I would bring it to the office and my coworkers would eat it for sure.

I eat just about anything but sauteed calves liver and beets prepared in any manner. I have a particular fondness for candy, popsicles and/or anything with sour cream on it. Baked goods, although not my favorite (except cookies) disappear quickly if they are within a mile of me. I show more control when I am at restaurants and generally do not order dessert (but have no problem sampling the dessert ordered by others). The ten second rule is too short-I have no problem with a one minute rule as long as the floor, or ground appears to be clean. I am about seventeen pounds over weight and that is with my exercising four to five times per week. I have no problem losing weight when it is important to me but I have been totally wrapped up in working for several years.

I'm never given food items as gifts, but I would eat it. The only thing is, I'm vegan, and sometimes people don't understand what all I don't include in my diet, haha. My granny has sent me chocolate bars and things for the holidays, and it makes me feel too guilty to not eat them.  :-[ :-X

I usually eat it if I know the person who made the dish/gift.   I never even thought about the cleanliness aspect, thinking everyone would be like me & be OCD clean.... but now I will think twice for sure.  I know & read about a lot of different cultures that don't wash their hands, & just people dirty in general -- I read the other day that the order pads at McDonalds are filled with feces, detected by swab analysis, can't even be safe using key pads.
Imagine how unclean ATM pads are & when you pay by debt card & have to put in your pin & answer question at payment.... sick.  I need to start bringing & using hand santitizer after transactions.

I'm usually pretty liberal about what I eat if it looks good.  And to me, most sweets look good.  However, if I've noticed something about a person that doesn't seem hygienic or something they've said in the past about their home, it can change things.
For example, recently someone had brought a nice cake to an event and had cut it into pieces, but I noticed that the husband had dirty nails and he had cut the cake.  I just couldn't bring myself to have a piece.  Also, years ago, I was told a woman had 3 or 4 cats and several dogs who had the run of the house and I couldn't eat anything she brought to some bake sales.  Someone had told me you could also smell animals when you entered her home.  That did it!

Depends on the person and how well I know them.  We usually cater in at work for Christmas and I am the only one in the family that bakes at the holidays.  I always give 2 of my neighbors cookies and I think they eat them because they look forward to each year.

No, I do not.  I do not eat food baked or cooked by others to include some of my relatives.  People are not all that clean especially when they have pets.  Some People are just nasty.

Usually not, unless it's something I really like. I can be a picky eater so if someone got me, i.e., banana bread, I'd appreciate the thought but don't see myself actually eating it.

Yes because I know the friends who gave them.  I am wondering this year though if there might be something other than food I can give.  So many people are on special diets.  Any ideas???

If they are close Relatives or close Friends, I will eat what they give me. If I do not know them that well, I will usually throw it away. I always feel guilty though when I throw food away because there are too many Hungry People in this World who would Love to have the food that I am throwing away.
