Title: Home work
Post by: lacrurowa on October 05, 2009, 03:12:50 pm
How many think kids would be better off if they did not have a bunch of homework to do after getting out of school

As a very recent student, I can say that while homework can sometimes be annoying when you want to do other things, it is actually quite useful.  Most people don't actually learn things from having them shown to them, more from playing with it and figuring it out for themselves.  Homework gives students the chance to practice the concepts and think about it on their own.  If the teacher was there to give them the answers or to help them along anytime they didn't feel like thinking about what to do next, they wouldn't learn as much.  If a crutch is present, people are going to want to use it, so by removing the crutch (in this case the teacher), the students learn to think on their own and solve the problems.

I'm a teacher, and I think a reasonable amount of homework is necessary to allow a child to put into practice what he/she learned in class.

Kids need the home work.  There is not enough time in school to get everything they need plus 'practice' which is what I consider homework to be.....At least for younger kids.

My boys teacher is making their homework fun to do which is great. School is alot different then it was 30 years ago.

But I agree that they need homework.

i agree that homework is useful. If you are only listening to lecture than the material does not sink in and you do not learn anything.

Tell your childrens teacher they have to much homework. The teachers will determine what the problem is. My child does not bring home much homework but I when she gets right on it as soon as she does get home.

My college professor let us choose whether to have graded homework or not. I voted for the homework, because I can't trust myself to study properly unless I'm forced to do homework. That's just me.

I believe we should keep homework, just not pounds and pounds of it. I give my 4th grader a good break when she gets home from school and after that we/she works on homework until bedtime. It takes that long.  It does help me to know what they are working on and where and if she is struggling.  She needs the practice and I can fill in any gaps left by the teachers.  I just wish it wasn't quite so much.  :P

Well I'm a senior in highschool and I'm homeschooled, and I agree that homework is good for us, however I also have to say I think some schools give way to much.  I know I'm very busy with all of my homework, tests, and exams that I have.  It seems like a barely have any free time.. But at least its preparing me for college:)

I honestly hated homework!!! It was the worst thing a teacher could ever ask a kid to do!!! It frustrated the heck out of me!! In high school when i tried doing my homework i couldn't focus on it because i was to bussy complaining about it. Just thinking about numbers got me angry. I am going to say that im cool with them having homework because they learn what they have to learn but maybe if they gave alot less i wouldn't be so mad about writing this. Okay im good now ;)

This is coming from a high schooler -
Homework makes you remember the stuff, and it makes it easier to make the teacher (and you) know how well you understand.
A lot less of it would be better, though. It does seem like a lot of it is busy work.
