I was just thinking the other day I have so much crap if I had to move soon it would take so long to pack up my stuff. I need to get rid of my junk.

I saw your topic heading and after i read your post now i said....whew!
We hated moving too BTW!

I have spent the last year and a half getting rid of excess stuff. My sister and her husband moved in with our parents to help them out. So downsizing 2 homes has been a real challenge. That also made me realize that I needed to doing a little purging of my own. The Vietnam Vets love our families. For the past few months we have had a standing appointment for them to pick up every Monday. nd I was really surprised to realize that I do not miss all the stuff I have donated.

I'm not moving but I know I have a crap load of crap. I'm a reluctant hoarder & I don't know how to get out from under it all! If i die in my hoarderness home, they'll find my dead body under a pile of stuff/junk in which my cats may have eaten my corpse due to not being fed since my passing. Probably they'll find my corpse after a year. Lol!

Yeah same here. But this coming month my mom will have a garage sale so we are putting everything there. Hoping to sell many things and if not put it in consignment or give to thrift store. lol Last wait for free dump weekend.

I try to do a few yard sales/flea markets every year to keep the clutter down and donate clothes as we grow out of them.

I don't have any crap. I do have a lot of stuff but it is mine so there ya go. :D

You might try putting some of it on OfferUp and LetGo.... mobile apps that sell things for you free. I've just recently been buying items off there & it seems like it is a good place to sell stuff locally.

Months before moving, go through your things and throw away old papers, donate old clothes, and just clean up stuff you don't need so the move won't be so hard on you.
-
Haha yeah I try not to be a hoarder and stay organized most of the time ::) :P
-
Yes, when I last moved.
-
No, not until we clean.

I have a Significantly LESS amount of stuff today than I did a year ago. Over a year ago, we put our house on the market as we do not need a 4 bedroom, 2 story, 3 bay garage, 1/2 acre lot anymore.
I started right away with de-junking in the basement. Some items were donated, some things were given to the kids, and much was tossed.
We then had one bedroom, ours, with a bed in it. One was used as an office, one was basically a storage room for photo albums and supplies. The other became the holding area for items that were spoken for by our children, but had not yet been picked up and hauled away by them.
Once the house sold and we found a nice two bedroom rental house, the downsizing, de-cluttering began in earnest. I took pictures of various pieces of furniture, decor, heirloom items, canning supplies, freezer, piano, etc and sent a mass text to our 4 children. I kept a notebook and recorded which item was desired by which child. It went very smoothly.
A phrase from a Japanese woman named Marie Kondo, who helps people declutter using the KonMari method, helped me a lot. She holds each item or piece of clothing and asks, "Does this bring you JOY?"
Using that phrase allowed me to part with items I have been hanging onto for years. We are still unpacking at our new home, and it feels like we STILL have a lot of stuff. I am continuing to put items in the Donation box as boxes get empty.

To be honest no i have stuff all over the place some of it just dont look at it for a while and forget its there

Unfortunately, I do! I have been collecting crap for 40 years now. My daughter will have fun dealing with it one of these days! I hope she enjoys her inheritance!

I was reading some articles on being environmentally responsible with the ever-growing population in the world. Each article made the point that continually buying new stuff is creating a problem for the planet. The articles stated that we are too much a consumer society that is starting to pay for this behavior. The point was that we can all make due with a lot less than we have and think we have to have! I would certainly agree with this and am looking at my own consumerism more and more!

No matter how much crap you have, you can't possibly have as much crap as we do. We have been living in the same house for 44 years and it is loaded to the gills with junk we never use but never get rid of either. It is getting to be a big problem.

I have been donating to the Epilepsy Foundation. So far I have donated about 26 bags. I still quite a bit to get rid off. Too much stuff.

I think that I could be moved out in three hours. I have been purging all of my junk for quite some time and am quite proud of the minimalist lifestyle I currently have. I think that I can name all of my personal belongings in under two minutes. I saw a NetFlix documentary on minimalism several years ago and it really impacted me. I have one set of silverware, one water bottle, one coffee thermos, one plate and two bowls that I use almost exclusively. When I get home from work I wash and dry the bowls and fill them with the next day's breakfast and lunch. When I eat at home I use a plastic plate that my son decorated for me when he was two years old (nineteen ninety nine). Two pair of jeans, five work shirts, one pair of workout shorts, two pair of everyday shorts, running shoes, dress shoes and ten year old work boots. Two computers and four screens and I am done.

Oh you have no idea - I bought a new house alittle over a year ago. I had THREE yes THREE houses worth of stuff to go through and get rid of. Thank God for my youngest son and his girlfriend on this note. I had a large house owned by my deceased mom, a hoarded house full of stuff of my husband's and a house my son's had been left by my mom when she passed. I have some stuff I wish I still had but my new house is pretty well clear of clutter AND I love it. Still working on three or four rubbermaid bins mostly full of papers I am afraid to get rid of but this is the way I have always wanted to live.

Do not complain: Your junk is your treasure!
-
I have Purple Heart come at least once a month and I get rid of stuff I don't need. It makes me feel good about giving it away and it de-clutters my house too!
-
I hope to move in the next year or so and I know I have a lot of crap. Plan on start getting rid of it. Spring cleaning.
-
oh we mmoved a few years back and omg...trash a lot of stuff went...easy to accumulate though...
-
I have so much Stuff too. I keep getting more. My Husband complains all of the time. I'm beginning to think that he is right. I need to have a Yard Sale.
-
haha yes I have thought of that too, if ever I had to move out, all my stuff. But I just know soon as I get rid of it, I'll have need for it lol
-
I have been collecting stuff for years but slowly getting rid of stuff I really don't use anymore. I still have a bunch of vhs tapes at my mothers house I told her she can keep them
-
I keep getting rid of things here and there, and it seems like it grows on its own. amazing!
-
Honestly, I know I have WAY too much "crap" and my husband constantly reminds me of this. But it's hard to get rid of things! I have 6 kids, so much of it is memories of theirs. Toys, clothes, baby blankets, tons and tons of school projects & paperwork. Shoot, I still have every pregnancy test! My oldest is almost 27 years old...youngest is 13. I just can't let anything go. Am I the only Mom to keep it all? :)
-
I throw stuff away, give to thrift shops, but it still seems to grow. I don't get it!
-
I do realize how much crap I have especially cookbooks. They are my passion. I love them even though I seldom use the recipes. I just love to look at the recipes. Maybe one day I will use them.
-
Yes I have some things that I need to get rid of, I just donated some clothes that I don't need; and it still look like I have more to get rid of.
-
Moving is bittersweet. It is nice when you get a new bigger place, but it is not fun having to move all that stuff and unpack. I moved a month ago and still have things to unpack.
-
I am fully aware of all my crap. And I attempt to rid myself of somethings on a regular basis. I like jkhanson's "Does this bring me joy" approach.
-
Yes, I do realize how much crap I have. Shoes and handbags are my weakness and I have way too many of each! ;D ;D
-
I have been going through all my stuff and I can't believe how much stuff I haven't used in years. Time to purge.
-
Not that much I get lost in paper from the mail. What to keep what to throw out.books aren't crap but my husband has tons some are old and paper backs about old movie stars .
-
We have a lot of stuff here but I try to throw the junk mail out every day or so. I'm donating more items to charity. Hubby wants to keep everything including worn out torn shirts because he wants to make a quilt one day. That will never happen.
-
Yes. The last time I moved (2015), I did a big purge as I was moving out, then another one as I was moving in. Then last spring I did another huge purge. And yet, somehow, I still seem to have a lot of stuff. I dream of downgrading again (I went from a house to a townhome, and honestly, I still have a lot of unnecessary space) and getting rid of more. We live in a time of excess!
-
Yes and I've made a practice of decluttering periodically.
-
We really don't need as much as we think we do. Recycling and donating our old/unused items is so relieving.
