Title: Alexa, Siri, Cortana, Portal by Facebook
Post by: calendria on April 28, 2019, 12:40:21 pm

Saw a video saying :

Consumer Alert: Alexa knows where you live!

Apparently Amazon employees can access this information on Alexa, but according to Amazon Administration it's only in the course of daily business/ I wonder!

Anyone have trouble with these "Smart" speaker "AI" or Cortana, microsoft's entry in the "Smart" speaker race?

Well, Amazon already has your address anyway, or they wouldn't be able to ship stuff to you. Everything is tracking you all the time. Every time you use a website, it's tracking your IP and knows where you are. It's keeping track of everything you look at, everything you search for, everything you buy. If you have a cell phone, it's tracking everywhere you go. All the smart speakers and phones are recording what you say. And all the info "they" have on you is being sold to everyone else.

There is no such thing as privacy.

What with social media and online shopping not to mention data breaches happening all the time, I figure every company that wants to know anything about me already does. Still, even without having anything to hide, these alexa etc. listening devices creep me out somehow.

Honestly I cannot see the use for it, not that I am worried about anything being tracked. I just cannot see why I should want one.  I have Siri off on my phone and Cortana laptop.

Of course they know where you live. It's not that hard to find out anymore.

I don't have any use for them. They're just spy machines.

Amazon sued for recording children’s voices via Alexa
June 17, 2019

In a lawsuit, Amazon has been sued by a woman from Massachusetts on behalf of her 10 year old daughter and children from eight other states is also seeking to take legal actions against the eCommerce giant Amazon for recording and storing the voices of children without their or their parent’s permission. Filed in a “Federal court in Seattle the lawsuit accuses Amazon of saving voice prints of millions of children by unlawfully recording their conversations around Alexa enabled smart devices” Vox news reported on Friday.
The woman has said that Amazon illegally recorded the voice of children and added them to “a massive database of billions of voice recordings that also contains the private details of millions of Americans”. Two cases were filed against amazon. One case was filed in Seattle federal court on the behalf of a 10 year old girl and the other in Los Angeles state court on behalf an 8 year old boy.

Both cases claims that the kids were using an Echo Dot which is Amazon’s most popular smart speaker with that exceeds sales of 50 million units. The complaint says that children cannot consent to be recorded and do not comprehend the “potentially invasive uses of big data by a company the size of Amazon” and that they “use Alexa without any understanding or warning that Amazon is recording and voice-printing them” the report said. The girl from Massachusetts is a registered user of Alexa. Amazon countered that it has “strict measures and protocols in place to protect ‘family’ security and privacy.” And in a statement to The Post it specifically addressed customers with kids.“We offer FreeTime on Alexa a free service that provides parental controls and ways for families to learn and have fun together” it said.

The Seattle case wants damages up to $100 a day and the California case asks for damages of $5000 per violation.

“Customers set up their Echo devices and we give them easy to use tools to manage them including the ability to review and delete the voice recordings associated with their account” an amazon spokesperson as said. He also mentioned “a company blog post that discusses Amazon FreeTime a dedicated service launched in 2012 to help parents manage the ways their kids interact with technology including limiting screen time.

“This is not the first time that amazon was charged of violating kids privacy with Alexa.

Earlier in May US Senators,a group of 19 consumers and public health advocates accused Amazon for recording and storing the conversations that take place around it’s smart speakers, recommending the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate into the case.Fighting privacy concerns and data collection suspicions in may amazon added support for new voice commands that let users ask Alexa to delete previous voice recordings. To ensure security and privacy of users amazon will be launching ‘Alexa Privacy Hub’ which is supposed to offer an easy way to learn how Alexa works and find privacy controls. Both cases demand that Amazon should acquire permission before recording minors voices and must delete the existing recordings of them. The lawsuits could create a bad effect for Amazon as it markets it’s Alexa speakers including kid’s. The company on Monday updated it’s Echo Dot Kids Edition which was made specially for children.

My mom's friend has Alexa. I don't know that much about it and she is the only person that I know who has one.

I know.  We take spies into our houses willingly.  My daughter hates my echos.  You can mute them but, that does kind of defeat the purpose.  I figure we're being tracked on our phones anyway, so what the hay.  With all the phones out there, video door security cameras, CCTV cameras, etc, etc, just assume you are always being watched.

SMH Amazon employees have always had access to your address.  How to you think it gets on the label and shipped to your home when you order stuff?

Amazon has your home address to be able to deliver stuff to you, but I personally do not like Smart speakers like Alexa, Cortana, etc.  I will avoid them for as long as I can I think they are a bit creepy I do not like the fact that they listen to everything you say

As far as I know it just works when it wants to.  I used to use the alexa on my fire stick or the dot.  I am not impressed with them anymore.  I think they do listen and keep records of it.  That's how they target products to you.  I also think that that invasion should be illegal.

I don't have any of these and no plans to own one in the future.  There is enough ways people can get your personal information or details no reason to help someone get it

I am always way behind technology.  I had no idea that Alexa devices record what you are saying!

Someone I am a caregiver for has an Alexa.  He mainly asks it what the temperature for the day is and for any current events coming up.  He is in his bedroom much of the day so I am also there when I do his medical cares.

Creepy to think that that box records what we say.   I guess it knows that he loves super heroes and the Marvel characters.

I haven't had trouble, but whenever you order from Amazon, they get your information.  How much more can Cortana know.  Unless you have it on all the time and it is listening to all your personal life conversations!!!

I remember a while back the news reported that a couple was talking about their friends and Alexa was listening and sent the conversation to the friends they were talking about.

Sometimes I'm scared of my Alexa cause the lights turn on from time to time and sometimes it thinks I ask something yet I did not talk nor watch anything, I keep it cause I'm lazy to walk and turn off the lights and alarm.

I would consider this item and others like it if you could limit the access to only the things you want, like lights, music and other non-evasive options.  Why do they not supply these when the product is installed?

I do not believe your phone is recording everything you say.

I don't know if they record EVERYTHING you say. They definitely record you when you intentionally speak to them, and sometimes even when it's not intentional. There are plenty of news stories about recordings being leaked, sent to contacts, etc. I've done tasks on Figure 8 that were meant to transcribe audio recordings when people use Alexa or whatever in their cars. Most of the time it's "where is the nearest McDonald's" or "play Michael Jackson". But sometimes it was just people having normal conversations, people arguing, etc. One person was yelling at her kid in the backseat. One time a woman sounded afraid and was crying. One time it sounded like someone was having a medical emergency.

Haven't you ever had a time where you were talking, not using your phone but with it nearby, and suddenly whatever you were talking about shows up as an ad the next time you go on Facebook or something similar? This happens frequently to me. One time I was talking to my husband about one of my company's clients. My husband had never heard of that client before, so also had never talked about or searched online for it. But the next time he opened Facebook, there was an ad at the top for that very client. Last weekend my mom was talking about getting an on demand water heater for the cabin. I was curious to see how much they cost. I went to Google on my phone and started typing "on d" -- three letters -- and the first suggestion that came up was "on demand water heater", not "on demand videos" or "on demand music" which I think would be more common searches. My mom freaked out a little when I told her.  :o

Without naming names or companies, I was directed to a survey with this information disclaimer:
 ( not on FusionCash)

"We are researching on voice activated devices and seeking users' willingness to submit their voice history data to help us improve current services for yourself and others! Please be assured that we are not selling anything and that your data will be stored securely and only analysed in aggregate with other participants. It will never be linked to you or others in your household or used to contact you in any way. As a token of appreciation, those who successfully complete the survey and submit their voice history will receive an "Amazon Gift Card" code worth $10. Please allow up to three weeks to arrange your gift card after successfully submitting your voice data history. Note that we will be collecting email address to mail the gift card voucher."

Is $10 enough to submit your history data to these survey people?

I think when you are purchasing an AI device to help you along in your daily life, especially through a company that you buy products from to get them shipped to you, you're already asking to lose at least a little bit of your privacy.

My brother got my mother an Echo but took it back because she doesn't use it.  He's into the latest gadget but we're not.  I could have gotten a free one when I switched back to Verizon earlier this year but I didn't even order it because refuse to have that in my house spying on me.
