Did you see that a Wyoming school is threatening families that have lunch debt with Foster Care. What they heck is this world coming to? My opinion of this is very negative. I think I would home school my kids these days. Public schools, leave a lot to be desired. Teachers paying out of pocket for supplies. Bullying. Then kids having to burden something that is out of their control like eating. What are your thoughts on this threat?

I saw a short thing about this on the news and in the same breath it said they said nevermind about the foster care thing. They are still going to try to collect the money some other way though.

I worked for the school district in my area for 14 1/2 years and at one point in there took my kids out and my husband who was disabled home schooled them. They can't afford to feed kids lunch but in my district they bought the most expensive office furniture and office supplies for the "big wigs" I finally quit I couldn't take it anymore. Children of illegals in our area get free lunch but no one else. It is all a big scam

Maybe they should do like when I was in school. Either bring your lunch or bring money to buy lunch or do without. Parents need to buck up and be parents and pay for their child's lunch not expect the tax payer to shelter the cost.
As for bullying that is nothing new. Has went on for 100 years.

It is not the school's place to provide lunch free of charge. Parents need to be parents and provide for their kids. Too many pop em out left and right them want everything just handed to them. The kid grows up thinking everything should be handed to them because that is what lazy mommy and baby daddy taught them. It needs to stop.

The threat is awful, tragic and horrifying.

Please get your facts correct. IT WAS NOT A WYOMING SCHOOL!! I lived in Wyoming for 30 years, so yes your info upsets me
It happened at the Wyoming Valley West School District which is a Pennsylvania school

I read the story about the threats to parents and I just thought it was so sad. I can not believe the school had the audacity to make such a threat. That must have been so stressful for the parents to receive that letter.

I have no children in school. But we did buy their lunches every month, K-12. But now here in this school district all lunches are provided. They budget it into the school budget. So all children get fed. If your child (high school) wants to eat off campus that is fine unless they are late getting back. Every school should do the same thing. But so many want the most expensive stuff for their offices. It is a shame that a child suffers because of it.

No need to get so bent out of shape. Who cares if something negative happened in a state you lived in. Sounds like an honest mistake to me.

There are budgets for office furniture as well. Our county the kids all eat free unless they want extra. And most of them do. So then they cry when they are denied that because they have already used everything in their account. There is no way for them to win.
The school cannot make the decision to put the child in foster care because the school lunch account has been depleted. They can report that the parent has an over due account. OR not let the child keep charging. OR next year your kid cannot enroll in school until delinquent accounts are brought to a zero balance. OR turn it over to a collection agency. No matter what they do people are going to cry foul.
I agree 100% parents need to take responsibility for their kids. And if you have a child and are on welfare you should be sterilized so you cannot keep having kids you obviously cannot afford to raise. Yes that will upset a lot of people. Oh well. If you cannot make good decisions then decisions need to be made for you.

My mom used to make me a lunch when I was a young kid. PBJ, chips, and an apple. Sometimes I would get a Slim Jim in my lunch as something extra. Inexpensive and easy to make.

Wyoming: Shame on you! In my state-Alaska-school lunches are free for all kids.
There are also food banks where they can get free food, thanks to the generosity of
some supermarkets like Walmart, Carrs and other major food stores.
Kids need good meals to develop healthy bodies and minds.

Threatening foster care is a bit much... so pathetic, but really parents need to feed their kids. The poor kids already get their lunch paid for by the state, it's kids that parents aren't responsible enough to make sure their kids have enough money on their card to pay for lunch or kids who spend their money on extras through out the week & run out by the end of the week. No child should be left hungry if they don't have money or no food... perhaps the PTA could fund raise & use the money towards school lunches for their school. Where is all that lottery money that was supposed to supplement schools.
In California teachers get reimbursed if they have to purchase school supplies, also they can write it off on their income tax.

The lottery money for schools goes to scholarships for college education. Not for grade school kid lunch programs.
It is not the schools fault if they kid spends all their money for the week (in their account) on ice cream and extras by Wednesday. Learn responsibility. It needs to be like when I was in school. You purchase a meal ticket and each day you have to present the meal ticket and a punch is taken off. You get one meal and nothing extra. If you lose your meal ticket you have to purchase another one. RESPONSIBILITY!
As far as getting paid back for supplies teachers purchase that is not true. Yes, they get x amount (not a very high amount) to purchase supplies for their classroom. As far as "writing it off your taxes" it doesn't make a difference. Very few people have enough stuff to "write off" to go above the standard deduction. Teachers should not have to supply a lot of things they do anyway. We had a list of supplies we needed. Once we were doing a project and needed a composition notebook. That was on the list of supplies. So every kid had to purchase their own composition notebook for the project. And every kid did. There may have been one or two supposedly too poor to get one and I guess the teacher got it for them and nobody knew the difference. I have a specific kid in mind. Yeah they got every freebie coming and going. But they also drove new cars. So there ya go.
And lastly, the PTA (do you even know what that is) is not responsible for raising money to pay for items for kids whose parents are too lazy to pay their own way. People are tired of the ones who are always asking for a hand out. It's like the county I live in. There is a man who is all gung ho about the Habitat for Humanity and has all these big ideas and thinks the county citizens are just gonna jump behind him and make all these donations. NO, people are tired of funding the lazy who refuse to work. Or instead of paying their bills and necessitates waste the money on lottery tickets, beer, cigarettes, or $60 eating out when they get paid and then want somebody else to pay the electric bill and rent. ::) ::) ::)

That is ridiculous! School breakfasts and lunches are free in our school system.

I didn't agree with the school's attitude either. Children should not have to suffer because their parents aren't able to buy food. It is making the kids afraid and there is nothing they can do about it. They will and our society will suffer :( some day because of the stress put on children today.

It is not that parents are not able to buy food. I do agree if parents refuse to be parents then the child needs to be removed from the home. Parents have their priorities screwed up. But the problem with this is there are not enough foster parents who want to deal with the behavior problems of the kids in the world today. You cannot wait until they are teenagers then start making rules. It will not work.
There is a problem when all the chicks in the welfare office with their designer bags and iPhones and high dollar nails are saying they cannot afford to buy food for their children. What makes you think they will spend the food stamp money on the kid? They have money to go to the mall, get their nails done, have a $800 phone...
The whole thing is screwed up and has gone to far to try to fix it now. But like I said earlier, the threat with foster care was just an idle threat. The SCHOOL can not remove a child from the home. They can report abuse or neglect. And I assume not paying for your child to have lunch would fall under neglect. Esp when you meet the income guidelines that show you can afford to pay your own way. Too many people just want hand outs. :( >:(

Just keep threatening to home school your kids, they'll realize that without the kiddos there goes their job! Once class size drops to a few students, lunches will be free for all kids (as it was when I went) even the American ones.

It is not fair to children who have a family than cannot afford lunches, some people do everything they can and still have trouble making ends meet. The children should not be made to suffer because of it. In our schools the provide a lunch and a breakfast for everyone who needs it, also siblings who are younger are allowed to come after school and get a dinner to go along with their brother or sister. The lottery was presented here as supplemental funds for the schools, instead they deduct from the budget any funds from the lottery, so the schools are getting no extra funds. It also makes me very sad to see someone who says things like let the 5 year old go hungry because his parents cannot afford it. Unbelievable the lack of compassion and frequently the lack of any knowledge of what some families are going through.

Honestly makes me so glad that I used to brown bag my lunch until High School. It just made things easier for both me, and my parents.

Do you live in California? They did the same here in California with the lottery money - presented it as one way to get it passed, but just use the money as part of the established budget, no extra funds given to schools.

Threatening? Threats are nothing. Most people cannot do this. Besides the fact that most parents can barely read themselves.
As for lunches being free. They are not free. NOTHING is free. Somebody is paying for it. Most likely the tax payers, which does not include the ones mooching the free ride.

I read where a wealthy CEO offered to pay off the debts but the school board wouldn't accept it. School breakfasts and lunches are free to the students in our school district. Also at the school system my daughter teaches at in central KY.

My kids have been on both sides of the fence through all of there school careers. There was a time they had a choice in eating the school lunch or bringing there lunch from home. Than we had a life changing event and they ate school lunches for FREE through the state. They never complained about it. It seemed most of the surrounding students were also on the same program so they didn't know the difference. As I got back on my feet my older kids had graduated and my youngest was dropped from the program. She's so funny - I let her pick 4 school lunches per month. Most weeks she'd rather bring her own lunch since the food is less to be desired. (I'm okay with that) i can't imagine foster care being a threat over lunch money dues. How could it have gotten so out of hand to begin with?

Better plan is actually home school your kids, not just threaten. You can instill your values and know that they're not being taught things you don't approve of.
My daughter is still home-schooling all nine of her children through high school. Then they CLEP out of many college courses. Don't ever think you can't do it. It's definitely doable. :highfive:

The school has accepted the offer. The debt is paid off and everything is fine.

Everyone can't home school. Most parents have to work and are not able to stay home with their kid.
I can see both sides. If parents do home school they need to make sure the kid has interaction with other people and kids so they know how to act when they get out in the world. I have seen where they are so sheltered they either go completely wild when they get away from the parent or they are so backward they do not know how to even talk to anyone.

never did public schools

never did public schools
You are lucky. Everyone doesn't have that option. Of course public school was not that bad before all the cry babies started with the not my kid and you could no longer punish kids or make them mind and have to pass them whether they do the work or not.
