I'm also upset that they've stopped doing theatrically released 2D animated films.

I grew up watching the 1994 Disney version, so I am trying not to be too biased. I will be honest, though, one of the main reasons I want to watch it is because Beyonce is involved.

I want to see the new version, but I'm also afraid it will be bad despite pretty good reviews.

In this one the animals looked so close to real (in an uncanny valley way) that it was like watching nature footage, they did not really emote the way the cartoons could with full-on facial expressions, and for that reason I felt a lot of the emotional resonance was sucked out of it, for example Mufasa's death felt about a tenth as sad. I am not on the Beyonce worship train and was not impressed by her or really anyone's voice acting in this. And they all but scrapped the only musical number I ever kind of liked.

Final verdict: okay but inferior. Save your money and wait til it shows up on netflix.

I also have a funny lion king ringtone that goes, I don't know what the words really are. Backup singers: That's ok, we'll make them up. No one knows a what we are saying, but it's fun to sing it anyway uh
