Title: Coronavirus
Post by: countrygirl12 on January 30, 2020, 05:35:53 am
So I saw a news story today about this virus in China and posing the question should this be considered a "Global Emergency".  I don't see how you can consider it a GLOBAL EMERGENCY when it is a China problem.  There are a few cases in the US (less than 5).  I don't see that as an emergency.  I would consider the flu more of an emergency.  It is pretty bad in my area.

Do you think this could become a problem in the US?

Do you take any precautions as to avoiding public crowded places because of illness right now?

The only precautions I'm taking is keeping my hands washed and taking vitamins C&D.

I'm not taking more precautions than I usually do.  Every so often I see somebody wearing a mask and I wonder if that really helps?   If you can breathe through it can't germs get through it too?

Of course it could become a problem here in America. Nothing is sure. But this virus, IMO, is a virus similar to other viruses. The flu pandemic killed millions of people, but nowadays we know more about quarantining those infected and taking precautions to take care of ourselves.

The media play up the Coronavirus to sell the story and get everybody riled up. ::) If we were so unfortunate as to contract the virus, we would probably weather it as well as would from the flu if we have a healthy immune system. That being said, I seriously thought I was dying the last couple of times I had the flu.  :crybaby2:

I just saw breaking news where it has been declared a GLOBAL EMERGENCY.

rghvac69- Washing your hands does not protect you from everything.  And a lot of stuff is airborne so unless you can stop idiots from coughing and sneezing and not covering their mouth you can be exposed.  If you go to Walmart and touch anything you do not know who touched it before.  So you can be exposed.

gwilson31 - You have no idea why they are wearing a mask.  I saw a woman at Lowe's with a mask on.  People would shy away from her.  She had the mask on because she was taking chemo and needed all the protection she could get.  But in that situation I would not have been in public.  But that is just me.

linderlizzie- The problem is people do not know they are infected or think it is just a cold when it first starts and are out spreading their illness.  This is more serious than the flu.  There is a huge discussion on twitter about this.  And it is just the opposite.  They are saying the government is lying and not telling the truth about the numbers and how serious it is.  SO I guess it goes back to the "fake news" like I said before.  You have no idea what to believe.  I am not worried about it.  Just wondered what others think.  But if ignorant people would stay home when they are sick the flu would not get so bad.  All of the schools in my entire area are shut down right now.

This should be moved to off topic . This is for site support no this type of topic. But to ad to the topic keeping clean is your best option & not letting yourself getting paranoid that you might get the virus by over doing it will probably hurt you in the long run if you do

I am not too worried about it YET, but why on earth did they bring all the Americans back to the US instead of quarantining them in China? They have been saying that people can spread it even before they have no signs of the virus themselves.

I spend my worrying time on things I have more control of and deal with the rest when they effect me, if that time ever comes and I can only hope it doesn't.

I was reading that some cultures not only wear masks out in public to prevent getting sick, but also they wear a mask when they are already sick & trying to not give their sickness, whatever it is, to others.   It never even dawned on me that the person wearing a mask potentially was already sick, I thought they were trying to prevent getting sick... live & learn.

Keeping your hands "clean" does not keep you from getting sick.  Germs are not absorbed thru your skin.  A lot of stuff is airborne.  Even if people try to say it is not.  When you cough and sneeze and blow spit across the room and people breathe that in it can make them sick.  If you are in public you cannot avoid this because there are idiots every where and most do not cover their mouth.  And you need to do so with your sleeve in to your elbow or shoulder.  If you sneeze in to your hand and then touch something the next person who touches the same thing is exposed to your nasty.

I agree, oldbuddy... I will take some precautions but not go out of my way or spend enormous time or worry about it

I agree, why was this started in support?? But I disagree with those that say washing your hands doesn't help... well, it sure as heck can't hurt!! Germs are easily passed by hands, so I say by all means, wash your hands as much as you can! I did not get a flu shot, I rarely do, and I don't notice getting sick any more or less. I haven't been sick for a few years now, hope to stay that way! We just had to sign a waiver at work, saying if we get sick with a fever, cough, nausea, etc., that we are to call in sick to work. Per the health dept. Now in my opinion, most employers expect you to show up pretty much no matter what, so I'm all for this policy! Because if I go to work sick (and I work in the public sector), then I'm giving my germs to many people more than likely!

I did not realize it was started in "support".  It is not that big of a deal.  And I cannot "move" it to any other area.  Not sure why you would have to sign a wavier saying you will call in if you are sick. That does not make sense.

What difference does it make? I cannot move the topic any where.  I did not realize it was started in "support" and most who start something in the so called wrong area probably done the same thing.  Heck, half the crap in all these threads are likely in the wrong area.

I am not paranoid but I do carry sanitizer.  You cannot wash your hands every 30 seconds when you are in public. Like I said I am more worried about people coughing and sneezing all over the place. The majority do not cover their mouth. And spraying them in the face with lysol would be frowned upon I am sure.

It is hard not to be concerned when every news station is saying it is not a matter of IF but WHEN and you need to prepare now.  Then saying "don't panic".  smh  You can't believe most of what you hear any way.  I have even started to see "fake news" in the comments of all the news stories about this virus.

It looks like the virus is spreading worldwide, but I think the Trump Team will do a good job...

I work in a restaurant, and we had to sign to show we had read the health dept policy. But as of yesterday, we are temporarily closed, except for take out only and during limited hours. No employees are working right now until the owners decide if doing the take out is even worth their time. This health dept. form didn't even have anything to do with COVID19, at the time, there were no cases in our state. We are a small town where many elderly people come to eat, so any kind of contagious illness could be deadly for them. I don't want to be responsible for someone else getting sick, no matter who it is, plus I sure don't feel like working when I'm sick. So I am all for it.

This thread started at end of January.  Now it is mid March and the world certainly is in uncertain times.  Pandemic.  Closures of schools, restaurants, fitness centers, etc.  etc.

This certainly has become a problem in the USA and the world.  We are "social distancing" and trying to "flatten the curve" to hopefully spread out the spread of this virus so our health system can keep up with the cases.

Please be safe.

Oh my potluck, are you saying you think both you and your son may have COVID19? I had some difficulty understanding your statement. I too, was sick about 2 weeks ago, although I had a fever and a cough, I was pretty sure it wasn't Corona, because my cough was "loose" after the 1st night, and I took Tylenol for my fever and after 2-3 days was gone. Luckily I did not have to work at that time, although if I had been scheduled, I most definitely would've called in sick, as that is what my employer wants us to do. Several others got sick around that time too, it sounded like much worse than I did, but thankfully not with the new virus. I hope that are not ill with it, it really sounds awful, please take care of yourself and do all you need to do to get better.

Stop watching the news on this. Going to CNN now. I better hit myself every time I go. Worried about grandkids they're not going to school. Yeah they have online teaching,tv video games etc. Worried about the social aspect. We as adults can handle not going anywhere except the store. Yah for grocery stores. They can't understand my daughter won't even bring them to the park.
