Title: Do You Have a Green Thumb?
Post by: JaniceSW on June 01, 2020, 06:35:26 am
Now, this is what I wish I had. A green thumb!! I would like to be able to grow just about anything with no problem.  I would like to see flowers and plants flourish.  However, I can kill off almost anything.  I also, believe it or not, almost get a little anxiety when I buy and try to care for plants.  I feel like the pressure is on to keep them alive.  I never have more than one plant now.  With artificial plants and flowers as beautiful and realistic as they are today, I have fake plants.  I even have a neighbor who uses a lot of artificial greenery outside intermixed with real plants and flowers.

I have always had a green thumb and can get almost anything to grow. But in the past few years, I have had such a problem with animals eating my plants, I have given up on trying to garden any more.

I love plants.  I have 14 indoor plants (I just counted them). lol. I love to plant outside.  I have 6 gardens (my husband was thrilled to death when he had to make them), not really, 😁 and I plant annuals and perennials, I also have 5 hanging baskets.  I love flowers in the summer.  I don’t plant vegetables there are too many animals in my yard, deer, wild turkeys, bunny’s, etc who love to eat them.

Some things do really good and some things not so much.  I don't have indoor plants because I have pets inside and pets tend to chew on plant leaves.  A lot of them are poison to a pet.  Cat or dog.

We have some veggies but so far none of the wildlife has really gotten in to them.  We also have deer, coyotes, bears, and smaller critters.  And don't let my name fool ya I do not live in the country.  Sometimes I wish I did.

My grandma has one, but my mom and I never did. We still try to plant some simple things like tomatoes though.

I have when it comes to taking care of my house plants, never really tried much to grow a garden. In our area we have such a problem with deers so they are sometimes attracted to our outside area, I generally let the hubby take care of outside plants and i do the house plants.

Very true about houseplants.  Just do research and it’s easy to find non-toxic indoor plants. We moved from the city to where we are now, but thinking it again, I wouldn’t mind living in the country either.

I would rather they did not chew them up and then puke them up anyway lol.  I just keep stuff outside.  They would be digging and throwing dirt every where too.  I saw recently where a woman was warning people about some plant she had in her house and her dog ate a few leaves and the dog died.  She had no idea it could kill per pets.

I have a little green thumb.  I can grow some plants as long as I remember to water them like I'm suppose to.  My grandmother on the other hand could grow anything.

Very true you have to be careful.  I have researched all plants before I buy them.  I have several hanging baskets in my house which is impossible for the cats to get to.  Some on the  fireplace mantel and a few on tables.  I’m very lucky my cats could care less about plants, and my dogs could care even less.  One day I was at a plant store and a lady was looking at a plant.  I figured she was a cat person because her purse had pictures of cats on it.  I said I hate to overstep but do you know that plant is toxic to cats?  She looked at me and said I’ve got lots of plants and if they eat them they haven’t died yet.  Unbelievable I was speechless.

For most of the time.  Then there are times that no matter what I do, the plant stops growing and just give up.

Your second sentence describes my attempts at growing anything perfectly.  I'm afraid if I had to grow my own food I would starve.  Funny maybe, but not funny!

Yikes.  I would appreciate someone telling me that. I tend to talk to people so I would strike up a conversation. :D
I have had random people tell me stuff about plants they saw me purchasing.  I had no problem with them talking to me.

Growing a garden is a lot of work.  But for some it is super easy.  Some work harder.  A lot depends on the dirt you are growing in.  There is a guy at church that can grow some of the biggest veggies I have ever seen.  There was a woman at the end of the road I live on that had a smaller flower pot and had a tomato plant in it and I swear her tomatoes were the size of baseballs.  smh  I don't know how she had such huge pretty tomatoes.

I don't have one but have been trying to grow more things lately.  My veggies and plants are green so we shall see in a few weeks.

This post made me laugh as I have certainly not got a green thumb.  We used to joke that my deceased granny could stick a dry stick in the ground and it would come up a beautiful plant.  After she passed my husband started planting stuff which always thrived.  Then we joked she left her green thumb to him.

I have been planting a garden for over 20 years and I usually get very little. Because of the quarantine this year I feel like I am a step ahead of where I usually am and am hoping this will be my year to get something out of the garden. Wish me luck.

Sometimes I do and there are the times that I have a brown thumb.  I think it depends on the plant.

I would say I do not have a green thumb.  I don't have plants indoors.....mostly due to lack of space and a good location to have the plants.  The kids gave me a potted plant in September.  It lasted until May.

Good Luck.

I have a green thumb.  I am already getting so many yellow squash and zucchini that I am having to freeze them.  I can see lots of tomatoes, green beans and green peas very close to needing picked.  My garden is doing really well early this year.  I guess because of the stay at home it got a little more attention than usual.

I come from a long line of gardeners.  I like to think I have a green thumb, whatever that means.  Growing a garden is a lot of work...tilling, planting, mulching, watering, weeding...but I can't imagine not having a garden.  We grow tomatoes, beans, beets, radishes, cucumbers, watermelon, squash, carrots, peppers and hot peppers, sweet corn, and herbs.  We also have our own asparagus patch.   Every year I look forward to fresh vegetables.  I also have 4 flower beds. I'm exhausted just telling you about it.

I grew an apple tree from a seed a couple years ago and it's still around! Other than that, I'm not great with plants unless its a really basic plant

Sometimes it takes me 3 or more times to get some kinds of plants to live.  I used to not have a green thumb.  I think that had to do more with time to pay attention to my plants.  I am not good at flowering plants.  Like a Christmas Cactus.  But edible plants other than your normal veggies I am ok at. I used to think.  Until I joined groups on fb. I then realized people really take this seriously.  I am awe at their knowledge and expertise.  So I just take enjoyment in my accomplishments.

I haven't intentionally tried to grow anything in a while but I did manage to sprout onions in my kitchen without planting them and without water years ago. My friends were fascinated.

Definitely haven't always been, but I'm working on getting better at it. Still not a master gardener but I'm doing way better than I was a few years ago. I take notes and everything otherwise I'll keep doing the same things wrong over and over.
