Title: Dumb Question
Post by: Nancy5 on July 14, 2020, 10:04:02 am
I have both a landline and cell phone.  I don’t know what’s going on but for the past week I am being bombarded with phone calls from telemarketing, or there was United States, and some even say Spam Risk.  I’m talking about 15 to 20 a day on each phone.  I don’t answer them but they still ring and it drives me nuts.  I tried blocking, but of course they are always different numbers.  Does anyone know of anything I can buy that will stop the calls so I don’t have to constantly hear the phone ringing.

I know how you feel. I have half a mind to just change my number but this will be a hassle to update my number on others sites since I've had this number for years. But, I've gotten better at knowing which numbers are which and just ignore them in addition to blocking the others.

I sometimes want to throw my phone out the window like right now.  Would rather use smoke signals. Oh gotta go now My phone is ringing.

I don't know how to stop them but I wish I did.  I don't get that many calls but would like to stop the ones I do get.  If you answer its a computer saying things like they saw online that you had requested information on certain topics that I know I never asked for.

I don't really think there's any way to block them, since they use different numbers all the time. Verizon will automatically block them from calling if they know it's spam. I'm not sure if other service providers do the same.

If one is a smartphone, there are a few apps that are supposed to help filter out spam, but they might just label the call "spam" while letting it ring which is still 99% as annoying.

I get phone calls and texts both, incessantly. I block and delete them but they keep coming. There used to be do not call places to report them, but they never worked for long either. I wish I could help you, but I'm in the boat with you.  :turkey:

BTW; not a dumb question.

I know what you mean, I finally got rid of my land line but the calls are a bunch.  Try Registering your phone number on a Do No Call Registry from the FTC, it helps with must of them,

I get a lot of them also, my cell phone tells me it's a scam and my landline I can see who is calling if I am watching TV other than that I just do not answer.

I am registered with Do Not Call Registery and double checked today, still registered.  It’s 11 am and I got 5 on my cell and 2 on landline 🤬

Unplug your phone or turn it off. smh  That is about it.  I had not been getting as many the past couple months. Never got as many as 20 a day.  Use to get quite a few. If it is your cell just silence it as soon as you see the number. Send it straight to voice mail. Landline you could pick up and hang up.  It is a robo call most likely so they won't know the difference.  Some people answer but do not say anything. Just be quite.

What good will that do.  They are not calling YOU specifically.  They just call numbers. So they will call the new number as well.  And if you change your number you have to deal with people calling looking for the previous owner.  When I got my first landline the previous owner of the number was a dead beat who did not pay his bills and I have to deal with bill collectors calling and harassing me for 2 years.  I told them they had the wrong number and I had just got the number but they did not believe me and called again the next day.  IF that happened today I would report them. At the time I was young and did not know I could do anything about it.  Esp when they are not even looking for ME.

Do not call places? There still is.  You can go to donotcall.gov but it is a waste of time.  Esp since a lot of the calls are spoofed. In other words YOUR phone number can be used to make this type of call.  I know 2 people personally whose number was used.

I’m on the do not call list, I just checked to make sure.  It’s 1:30 and so far I received 7 on my cell and 6 on landline.  I always got them, but never like this.  Hopefully it will slow down.

Yeah, I am too. I still get calls. If they originate from another country, and most do, apparently there is nothing the US can do about it. ::)

lol True but apparently you can't do anything but ignore the calls. Some people answer and argue with and troll the caller. Mess with them and keep them on the line being stupid. Waste their time. But sometimes that backfires too. There was one man who done something to make one of them mad and he got over 75,000 texts in just 24 hours. He ended up having to change his phone number. I have had my number a long time and don't want to change it. If I don't know the caller I do not answer. If the phone is by me I just silence the call or send it to voice mail then block the number.

I don't have a helpful answer but mine was doing that (cell not landline I don't have a landline) and yes of course always a different number.  It was totally and completely aggravating.  I just kept blocking - I probably have a zillion blocked numbers but finally it has tapered down or stopped.

But I am receiving the calls nonetheless. I figured the possibility exists that maybe the amount of calls coming in now can be less to what could be if I were to change my number, comparatively. I mean, anything to help if even just a little.

One of the reasons I'm still with Comcast/Xfinity is because of the call blocking. I had signed up with Nomorobo when they first offered (free) and my calls went from 20 a day to 5. Political parties were still allowed to get through, but they were blocked too. When a unwanted call came in, it would ring once, then go to the trash pile. Now they have updated their program even more. I'm down to 2 a day IF THAT. Some days no calls. If they happen to be my area code, they will get through but I don't answer.  I let them go to the answering service. If it's important, they'll leave a message but 9 out of 10 won't. I have peace every day now.

Not sure...my phone tends to detect spam, but every so often I receive a message and then try to block the number and it still sends messages later on....

You could try downloading nomorobo software and signing up for it. I tried it with my phones and it stopped quite a few of the robocalls. Not all of them, but a good percentage. It would certainly be better than what you are experiencing now.

When I had my landline I paid to have it unlisted and still got tons of calls, then a couple of years ago for some error when the install my new floor my actual line in the house got cut, I still had a Landline but no phone connected to it, so I transferred the land line calls to go to my cell phone and the call never stopped.  I registered to a call cehck from AT&T and they actually tell you if they call is an Spam, Political, etc.  Now that I finally cut the land line my calls have decreased to about 2% of what they were before. It goes to show you that no matter if your line is private or public they can still call you
