Turkeys Have Nothing to Do With Chickens
There’s a common misconception that turkeys are just overgrown chickens. In fact, the two distinct species are separated by 45 million years of evolution.
We Almost Ran Out of Turkeys
Today, there are 7 million wild turkeys roaming North America, but a century ago, they were hard to find. Humans almost hunted turkeys to extinction in the early 1900s, but imaginative conservation efforts brought them back from the brink. Thanks to the invention of a cannon-fired net that captured turkeys unharmed for relocation to areas where there were none, the species — and Thanksgiving — endured.
Turkey Droppings Reveal Their Gender
You can tell a lot about a turkey by the droppings it leaves behind. Male turkeys leave droppings shaped like the letter “J.” Their female counterparts leave droppings in a spiral shape — and droppings can clue you into the turkey’s age. Older turkeys leave droppings with a wider diameter.

I use to raise turkeys!
By raising turkeys, it is more juicier than you buy in the stores! 1st time we had raise turkeys - it weight about 42 pounds before stuffing it. My dad did worked for the LAFD. He had borrowed it from his station & returned it his next shift!
So the juice has filled the roasting pan. Mom had to take the juice out & let it fill up again!

This year my turkey came with a tag with the information of its' home the feed and the happiness level this turkey got to witness. That is a first.
Let me tell you a story, since I am getting on in years, When I was a child, one saying that I heard of is that you have to buy a turkey that will fit in our oven or you will have to cut it in half and that wont be pretty on our table. A long time ago restaurant ovens were huge enough for those 65 and up pounders. wow can you imagine sight of your home grown 45 pounder turkey - can you imagine the turkeys reached over 65 pounds. but farmers knew about price of feed time to grow and than get to the market now today. They do have a restaurant on east coast (look it up on the internet) where you can see those big turkeys and the ovens for them, but you have to get the restaurant reservations about 2 years in advanced.

I have heard that turkeys will drown in the rain, they just keeping holding the heads up with their mouths open. Don't know if that is true, but I have heard it from ranchers before.

We have lots of turkeys in the wild here there foot prints are bigger then my hand. They are very nosy. is you sat still in the woods and just make a little bit of noise they will came to see what you are doing.

Actually the smaller turkeys (like 12 pounders) are the juiciest because they don't dry out. :turkey: :turkey: :turkey:

I don't really like Turkey, it's usually really dry.
