I have an automatic car but I have driven a standard shift car in the past. In fact I have also driven a semi-truck which I had pleasure in doing. Automatics are easier but I think in cases when you are stuck in the mud or on ice the standard shift will get you out of the situation faster.
-
I have automatic drive, but I learned many years ago on a standard 3 on the column stick. My boyfriend later had a red Mustang with 4 on the floor, which he taught me how to drive that.
-
Growing up I would shift gears as my parents drove the car. But given my disability I drive an automatic. :peace:
-
My pickup truck has a stick-shift.
-
I can drive both.
-
i can drive both..both my vehicles are automatic..but i learned to drive in a straight drive vehicle..
-
I never learned how to drive a stick shift... Wish I would have learned. Too hard to learn now that I am old! lol
-
I learned how to drive using the standard shift vehicles. I prefer automatic drive!
It is one of the things a person gets used to. It isn't hard.
-
I like a nice stick. And my first three cars had a manual shift. Now I have a truck with automatic. By the time I heft myself in the truck, I'm too tired to deal with a stick shift.
-
Yep, can do do both! :-X
-
I learnt to drive a stick shift in the United Kingdom. In the UK if you pass your test in an automatic vehicle you are then only licensed for automatics. If you pass your test using a stick shift, you are licensed for both. I was amazed when I met my husband and he told me he passed his test in an automatic and is licensed to drive both, so when I took my test in the US, I took it in an automatic. I love the fact that it is almost impossible to stall an automatic and that waiting at a junction which is on a slight hill, you don't slip backwards!
-
I learned on a stick shift, while I prefer that, I can no longer drive them due to arthritis in both knees, so drive an automatic now
-
I have a stick shift on my car but automatic on my SUV. I'm getting to the point that I would prefer automatic.
-
I drive an automatic but I always wanted to drive a standard.
-
Learned to drive using manual transmissions, automatics were not all that common then! Still prefer manual over automatic but these just can't be found in the cars I buy, instead they have all gone to the 'paddle type' auto/selective type transmissions. I agree that having a manual gives the driver a LOT more capability and flexibility in controlling their vehicle.
-
I grew up with stick shift. Drove pickups, cars and grain trucks. Our old bronco is also stick shift. But now the car and pickup is manual. Sometimes I would still rather drive stick. But alas the old body is giving out and it is hard to shift the stick now. Think I will just sell the bronco.
-
I grew up using standard shift vehicles and still own a couple, but I prefer automatic now. I agree that standard shift is better at getting you out of jams, like getting stuck in mud or snow. And it saves on gas too better than automatic. I made my kids learn standard shift and had them taken their driving tests on standard shift just to make sure they know how to drive standard if they are ever in an emergency situation when a standard shift vehicle is all that is available. But they both drive automatic now mostly.
:monkey:

I used to use standar, I was fine with that, Then now I am using automatic, i dont thing will be brave to use the standar again :)
-
I am able to drive both. I would rather drive an auto matic these days just cause I am lazy. ;D Actually I don't drive anymore.
-
My parents tried to teach me how to drive our stick shift back when I was fifteen but they scared me so bad. It was my best friend who actually taught me how to drive it. But I prefer an automatic!!!
-
My ex convinced me stick was better so that's what I drove for about 25 years. Too many years for my knee. I don't have a car right now, but my next one will be an automatic.
-
I failed my first driving test using a stick shift; my preference will always be automatic.
-
I prefer AT (automatic transmission). I prefer automatic because is safer.
-
I tried to drive a stick shift but I didnt like it so now I only buy a automatic car
-
I currently drive a manual shift car, have since I started driving. I prefer the control when driving, and like the better gas mileage I get.
-
I learned to drive manual stick shift when I was 14, then dad taught me how to drive a push button transmission (anyone remember those?) at 16, and dad once owned a DeSoto that could be automatic OR manual shift. That was one neat car.
My first car and 5 cars after that were stick shifts, on the column, and hubby taught me 4-on-the-floor at 18. I felt like a queen when I bought my first automatic car and it felt great to not slide backwards at a red light on a hill when trying to go forward on the green. LOL
-
i can and have both I can drive a semi to
-
Automatic thank goodness...one less hassle
-
automatic. i dont have patience to learn to drive a standard.
-
I only know how to drive an automatic, but I really wish I knew how to drive a stick.
-
I know how to drive a standard but wouldn't want one. To much trouble imo.
-
I can drive either but drive automatic
-
Automatic but eventually I do want to learn how to drive a standard as well.
-
Yeah in fact I went back to autistic and had a brainfart. I was trying to shift gears.
-
Unless and until I can afford a Ferrari, I refuse to learn to drive a standard.
-
It's not hard. Good luck
-
I drive an automatic, I haven't driven a stick shift since I was young, probably couldn't do it now.
-
My first vehicle was a standard shift, a 5-speed stick on the floor. I loved driving with it so much every vehicle I bought up until my most recent one was a standard shift. I always felt it helped to focus more on driving; maybe I can attest to that by saying I have had only one accident in the 40+ years I've been driving.
-
I drive a stick shift, but obviously know how to drive an automatic.....honestly, i'm not a huge fan of the stick shifts, especially in traffic/bad weather, but it's definitely good to know how to drive one....and apparently, they are better for the car (not quite sure how though)....
-
I have never learned how to drive a standard shift vehicle. I have always had automatic vehicles.
-
I actually took my driving test on a standard shift vehicle. I prefer them to an automatic.
-
I can drive both automatic and standard shift. I prefer automatic. After 20 years of driving, I still get nervous when you stop at a traffic light going up a hill while driving a standard shift.
-
I know it sounds weird to some but I don't know how to drive a standard shift vehicle simply because I have never tried to. At this point I doubt that will ever change.
-
I haven't driven a standard shift since I was a teenager.My first car had a 4-speed stick.All the rest have been automatics.
-
I drive an automatic. Tried that standard before and so far rather stick to automatic
-
I've only driven automatic all my life. One of these days, I'd love to learn how to drive a stick just incase. I tend to have a lot of things that I want to know just in case I need to know it. Stuff like picking a lock, hotwire a car, make a fire, etc. There are plenty of others but of course they aren't coming to me at the moment.
-
I never learned how to drive stick. I always drove automatic.
-
automatic car but know how drive the stick :glasses-nerdy:
-
I will look forward to learn how to drive standard vehicles sounds really challenging.
-
My first car was a standard shift......I still know how to drive one....I would love to learn how to drive a big truck....
-
I think U are wright about that.
-
I drive both so I can switch off. It gives me a change.
-
I took a few lessons on the standard by never really mastered it. So I drive an automatic.
-
I only really know how to drive an automatic. Like 10 years ago my brother taught me how to drive a stick but it has been so long so I doubt I still know how.
-
I've only driven an automatic. I haven't learned how to drive standard...yet.
-
I love driving stick shifts. However, I finally gave it up and went back to an automatic a few years back. Getting too old to have to keep hitting the clutch and changing gears. I still have nightmares about being stuck on a steep hill trying to get in gear without rolling back on to the car behind me.
-
I have driven a standard shift in the past. Ever since I got married, I switch to automatic transmission because my wife did not like to drive manual transmission cars.
-
I don't drive anymore, but, I can drive both. Standard is more fun, but, automatic is for us that want to just relax when driving.
-
I only know how to drive an automatic.
-
I drive an automatic, cars will not go into gear for me, have tried for years to do that. I have no trouble with the 8 gears on the John Dear.
-
I drive a manual. I will never go back to driving an automatic, unless the manufacturers stop making them. I love driving a stick!
-
I know how to drive a manual, but very much prefer an automatic.
-
Man... I don't know anything about cars
-
I know how to drive both. My truck is a standard and my girlfriends car is an automatic. The standards are not that difficult to learn how to drive. You always start is first gear and you let off easy and go and than you will need to shift into second almost immediately. The trick is to listen to your motor when you hear the motor starting to wine you shift into a higher gear and once you are confident in driving a standard you'll find that you are skipping second or third but the trick is using your feet off the clutch while pressing on the gas. I think you can save a little in gas with a standard rather than an automatic. Now this was interesting and I enjoyed explaining this it felt good. I hope you try and practice driving a standard I think you will like it better.
-
I drive both. But i prefer to drive stick shift. It's more fun and costs less when you buy a car. Also, learn to drive stick shift so you can drive any type of car in case of emergency.
-
Shift seems too intimidating!
-
I do not drive any more. im too olod
-
I never try the manual car, I `d like to try it but my husband don`t want me to practice to his car, He is afraid I`ll ruin it.
-
Automatic here. Stall it all the tim with manual.
-
I earned extra money for a while shuttling vehicles for a car dealer, so I am comfortable with anything that has wheels.
-
i have an automatic, but i can drive pretty much anything you stick me into if need be
-
I once drove stick shift but I regret it I changed all of my driving to automatic transmission
-
When I learned how to drive there was no choice, automatic transmission was not an available option.
-
I only drive Automatics. Standard shift vehicles are just too hard to maneuver unless that is the only kind you have only driven.
-
I drive an automatic and have always wanted to learn how to drive a standard stick shift just never got the chance!!!
