Title: Another phrase i dislike
Post by: hitch0403 on March 04, 2018, 10:53:05 pm
The saying pertaining to a loved one that has died."They are looking down on you"

First off, that must be one heckuva telescope.2nd,why bother going to the cemetary then? They would be able to see us in the living rm watching tv right? So why bother going somewhere they are dead?

Just mixing humor with truth.

Gen 3:19 You will have to work hard and sweat a lot
to produce the food you eat.
You were made out of the ground.
You will return to it when you die.
You are dust,
and you will return to dust.”

Ecclesiastes 9:5 King James Version (KJV)
5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

That is an amusing point. There's a lot people say in the name of comforting the bereaved. No matter what anyone believes, it is still a loss and very difficult to manage for the ones left behind. It's nice people try to comfort.

Yes your body is dead and returns to dust but what about your soul?

That is a funny truth.  Not something ya ever really think about.  Your soul goes to Heaven. It always hurts my heart and makes my brain angry when I hear non-believers say when they die it's over...ur just done.  What would be the point in doing anything than?  Without faith life would be meaningless.  Now on the other side of things when someone dies and people say... well they're no longer in pain.  They are in a better place.  How do we know that? If that person wasn't saved than that's not my idea of a better place.

We just had the second of a five part lecture series about the Catholic Mass and how many churches' architecture was designed for the congregation visual focus to be lifted UP - with the idea that Heaven is often figuratively thought to be "up there"...

The priest was pointing straight up as he was making this point; then made the observation that people in China would be pointing in an opposite direction when they pointed "up".  This was all to make the point that it's not really a physical location/place in our limited understanding of three dimensional space - yet it is still easier for us to visualize or conceptualize Heaven as being "up there".

I love that phrase,,,  "they are always watching you"...  I hope so.  I want my mom and dad to always watch over me and know that I am dong my best at the things I do.  I didn't get to say good-by to my mom or dad before they passed,,,  so I always say I hope they are watching me,,,, so I can tell them I love them  <3

Keep in mind (if you are a prayerful person at all) that prayer has no time boundaries, so you can still pray for your parents' peaceful passing over - even though from your earthly perspective that has already happened in the past.

The phrase that I hate:  When someone on TV always say when questioning a suspect, "you have an answer to each question".  Well don't ask if you don't want any of the answers.  That galls me.

Then show them this.....
Christ himself when on earth performed resurrections. (Lu 7:11-15; 8:49-56; Joh 11:38-44) Only through Jesus Christ can resurrection, with everlasting life thereafter, be possible.—Joh 5:26.

Yes your body is dead and returns to dust but what about your soul?

Soul is what you are. When Adam was created he became a living soul. What you are now.Not a separate thing. Not a biblical teaching.God said dust when u sin....ur soul doesnt leave..it dies when u die.

The soul that sins dies says Ezekiel 18:20

Dust isnt life either. What did Lazarus say after Jesus resurrected him?He didnt speak of a heavenly bliss or hell....he was asleep as Jesus said right before he resurrected him.

So answer this...if Adam and Eve didnt sin would they have died?NOOOOOOO!!

God didnt create man to die and go to heaven. The earth is our home.

Hope NOT BS is best way to go

Much of the world profits on how the dead still influence their loved ones.

My father-in-law passed away in 1999.I remember going to the undertaker with my wife and he was showing us all the different caskets.I felt like i was in a used car lot with a salesman. They put you in a wall now and if you want a picture of your deceased love one you might pay $400 just for that. They suck the blood out of you cos they know you are vulnerable.

Jesus said when you know the truth it will set you free from all this nonsense and tradition. He said to mourn with those that mourn and they will be comforted for being that way.

Its almost that saying reminds me of how u teach children about Santa, the easter bunny or tooth fairy.Tell the ones the truth from the bible what happenes at death and there is a hope of seeing them again as promised by Jesus in the resurrection.Jesus being resurrected from the death offered him to say RE death and Satan,"I have conquered the world now by dying and being brought back to life"

I answered and dont see post...lemme try again....after 40 days seeing the resurrected Jesus the apostles see him go upward and then covered by a cloud.....so heaven clearly pictured upward by that scripture.

For me personally the phrase doesn't bother me. I find it a little comforting. Although it can never replace having the person there with you physically. I understand the point, I went to a Christian school and when talking about Heaven it was always up.

Yeah.  I always wonder about some of those things.  When I was in my Catholic Highschool, they talked about how if you didn't go to Church every Sunday, you wouldn't make it into Heaven.  My first thoughts went to, "so, because I had a life threatening injury and had to have surgery on Sunday (missing Mass) to save me, I don't get to go to Heaven."

There are so many things like that that don't really make sense yet so many just do them anyway.  I figure if I think about someone who has died, that's the same as going to their grave because, as you said, why go if they can see me all the time?  I feel like if you want to visit the grave, do it, if not, don't.  Really the only thing that visiting the grave, or bringing flowers to put on it does, is show others who visit the grave that others care about this person.

I hear ya.I was brought up a catholic and remember being taught if u died with a mortal sin you went to hell.I always thought that made God look wicked he would do that to his creation. And eating meat on Friday was considered a mortal sin.I remember thinking,im going to burn forever for eating a ham sandwich???

What nonsense!!Plus the masses were said yrs ago in Latin. You had no idea what was being said. They changed that now and say them in English and they still make NO sense!!Bring back Latin!!!LOL!

You only go to Heaven if you are saved.  If you are not saved you go to Hell.  Why would someone who does not believe in God go to Heaven?  As for no longer being in pain, again, only if they were saved.  If they were not saved they are just now experiencing real pain.  I think it just makes people feel better so they say it.  But if you tried to tell the ones remaining the truth then everyone would get mad at you and say you were a horrible person.

I agree, just because it feels like they are writing off your grief. Nothing helps, least of all claiming you are being watched.

I believe that your soul lives on and yes that phrase may seem a little far fetched but our body's (the shell) is no longer here but our souls remain whether it be "up there" or "around us" .. they are still with us watching over us. Something to look forward to I guess, we will find out one way or another...lol

I agree with that...but we also tell kids to be good cos Santa is watching them. That isnt the truth....correct?But they do it out of tradition for Xmas which in itself isnt supported by bible.

So if u support bible why dont u just agree what God told Adam? You will go back to dust.He never said anything about going to heaven or hell.He told Adam u will go back to dust and dust isnt life!!And the other examples that show death is a state of non-existence or sleep as Jesus said before he resurrected Lazarus. He said he was asleep i will awaken him.And then Lazarus came to life again and spoke of no heaven or hell cos he didnt exist while he was dead.

The bible says Jesus wept when he heard of Lazarus death.

He shoulda been jumping for joy instead if he went to heaven.

The bible is also clear on NO man has entered heaven.Jesus was only man to do so.

Glad to always support scriptures to those that wanna see them.Ive already put them up in other topics but just a friendly reminder.

The Genesis scripture is talking about the human body. Those who knew and loved the Lord....their spirits are in heaven.

Since the Bible teaches that Heaven is God's throne, and the earth His footstool, I understand looking up...not to China, to a heavenly kingdom.

Our departed loved ones looking down is for comfort after losing a dear one. I lost my son. I don't look up, I just cry when I think of him. Almost 5 years now, and it never gets "OK".
