Do you have lightning bugs in your area?
I always thought lightning bugs were everywhere. This week I found out that my niece and my nephew do not have lightning bugs in there areas. Niece lives in South Dakota. Nephew lives in Twin Cities area in Minnesota.
There children had a blast catching the lightning bugs at my folks' farm this past weekend.
-
No lightning bugs in my area of MN. They have them where my in-laws live in IA.
-
We have fireflies here in MA.....I used to like catching them when I was a child. We used to try to catch enough in a jar to read by. LOL :glasses-nerdy: :glasses-nerdy:
-
We have lightning bugs everywhere in NJ. Kids love catching them.
-
They are plentiful here in Tennessee. I always start anticipating them right before they appear, usually around the first of June. It's an event to spot the first one of the season! I caught them as a kid and I still like to catch one occasionally, say hello, and let it go. So fun!

:monkey: :) :monkey: I do have lighting bugs in my area. I lived in other states of the United States of America and those places don't have lighting bugs. I watch them early evening. :monkey: :) :monkey:
-
Yup, they are here in eastern PA sometimes.
-
I caught lightening bugs with my grandson last week. First time I had done that in many years (since my daughter was young). We have plenty but not as many as when I was growing up. I guess we must have caught most of them.
-
I haven't seen any in the city since we moved from the country.
-
We don't have them here. Until I was in my teens I actually believed they were fictional because I saw them on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland and thought they were some made up magical thing. Still haven't seen one in person but I would like to!
-
We totally have them in our area. It's so cool when they are lit up.
-
I live in South Carolina and I have never seen them here. I have only seen them once in my life and that was in Arkansas.
-
I am in Tenn. also we have lots of them here, love to sit on the front porch and watch them.
-
We have them in Florida, but I have never seen so many as in North Carolina.
If you see an entire lake of them reflecting over the water, THAT is something to see!
-
I'm in California, and unfortunately, we don't have them. I went on a cross-country road trip a few years ago and I was lucky enough to see them up close. They look so cool, but they are ugly bugs (when not they aren't lighting up).

I hope that after you watched them light up the jar, that you let them go so they can spread the light around.
Letting them die in a jar is rather cruel. I don't think kids realize this when they put them in jars.
-
Yes we do but I feel like there were so many more out when I was a child.
-
I saw my first one of the season last week. When I was a kid I used to catch them and put them in jars and turn off all the light and watch them light up.
-
We have them here in Georgia. love to sit and watch them.
-
love them
-
We usually do, but I haven't seen any lately, but then again we're not out often at night. Hopefully we can catch some on the 4th.
-
yes we do..we have lots of them,,,my cat chases them,,, :star:
-
You bet! They come out every summer in Madison, WI (where I currently live).
-
I live in South Carolina and I have never seen them here. I have only seen them once in my life and that was in Arkansas.
I'm in the upstate of South Carolina, we have lots and lots of them. So fun to look out in the backyard at night and see so many of them twinkling. It brings back lots of fun memories of catching them and and putting them in jars. Of course we always let them go before we went in for the night.
-
We have lightning bugs in Ohio. I sit on the back porch in the evening and watch them. I used to catch them in a jar when I was a kid which was many, many years ago lol
-
We have 'em here in Georgia. My boxer loves chasing them.
-
That's amazing. I really thought they were everywhere too! We have them all over the place here.
-
We have them at our place. Sometimes we sit on the deck in the evening with a glass of wine and enjoy the light show.
-
I had one crawl up me :o :o :o :o :o
-
Here in Georgia, we have the largest population of lightning Bugs you ever saw. As a child, we kids would get together and catch them in jars with holes in the lid where they could breathe. We would use them as night lights when we went to bed at night. :)
-
i live in sc..when we were kids we use to catch them...so many fond memories
-
Yup ... Lightning bugs here in PA. The little girl next door was trying to catch them the other night.

I like your way of enjoying the evening light show! Sitting outside in the evening (if the skeeters aren't too bad) is such a wonderful way to spend an evening. I also notice when the bats wing over head.
-
Do any one of you know what do lightning bugs eat? ???
-
No, I don't have them here. My mom got to see them when she was young though in Missouri.
-
Not in southern California! :(
-
I don't think my grown grand-kids have ever seen one. They grew up "in town".
It was such fun catching them...before cell phones and tv. Back when we used to read paper (gasp) books to entertain ourselves.

Some fireflies here but not many.
-
We have lots of them, here, in WI.

Yes we do!!!!!!!!! I like lightning bugs. There was one in my home the other day and I put in outside so he could be with his friends.
-
I live in Ohio ,,,,, We have those little cute things by the millions. They light up my front yard every evening. I have a plant on my front porch they must really like because they tend to get into it and the plant is always blinking off and on all night LOL
-
No lightning bugs here, when I visited my grandparents they did, so I got close to them, geeze scary looking bugs I could not catch or touch them. :-[
-
My grandson and I are going to Charlotte, North Carolina in a couple of weeks, I cannot wait to show him the lightning bugs. I think he will really be interested in them.
-
I've never seen lightening bugs in my area
-
Just went out and caught some the other night.

It's weird and I never thought about it since I moved to Florida, but I don't think I've seen one here.
-
Maybe it’s because of climate change is the reason why they don’t exist in other areas of the world.
-
I can remember catching them when I was growing up. That was before computes and cell phones. Those were good day. Have a good week.
-
I am in California and have not seen any recently but I love them they are awesome
-
As a kid living in Texas I did a show and tell about lighting bugs. They are also know as Fireflies, they are not flies or bugs but actually a beetle. The species found across Texas is Photinus pyralis. It's a narrow creature about half an inch long. Texas lighting bugs emit a yellow flash.
-
I don't see as many lightning bugs now like I use to see when I was a kid. Of course when I was kid I was outside more at night and I use to catch them.
-
Wow I never knew that they didn't have lightning bug everywhere .. We have them here on the East Coast.. I'm guessing the climate in different areas are why they don't have them.
-
None here, when I went to my grandpa's house I seen them so wonderful.
-
I used to see them all the time when I visited family in New York. I never see them now.
-
They were so fun to catch, chase when I was a kid.
I don't think my grand-daughters have had that experience.
I grew up in Illinois, and think they are all over the MidWest. In the country though, not too much city.
:rose:
-
Love lightning bugs! My sister and myself use to catch them and place them in jars with grass and seeds and try to keep them as pets but they eventually died..lol. Sad but true.
-
They show up in my current area of residence (Madison, WI, USA) every summer.
-
i live in illinois so we definitely have lightning bugs
-
None here in Boston Ma. When we would go to my Dads home town in NC I use to love catching them in a jar with holes in the top. I wanted to bring them home to Boston but they never made it :(
-
Yes we do have lighting bugs here in PA. They start coming out in June and I would say they go on there way sometime by September.
-
Yes, I have lighting bugs in my area. The colors are so beautiful at night. ;) ;) ;) ;)

Yeah, but I haven't seen very many this year.
-

Honestly, growing up in VA, I only saw lightning bugs once flying around in my backyard. I don't know if they are dying out or just prefer certain regions to others.
-
No i don't have lightening bugs here in the city. But when i go to long island u sit outside just to watch the lightening bugs
-
We saw a lot last year but not as many this year. I grew up in South Carolina and we had tons of them. We'd catch them and put them in jars to light up our clubhouse lol.
-
In long island I see a lot of lightening bugs
-
I only see them occasionally here in Florida, and it's never very many at one time.

No we don't see lighten bugs in my area, but I wish we did. The first time I saw a lighten bug was when I went to visit New York and I was 8 years old. I was so amazed, I wish my kids to experience that.
-
In Georgia and I saw some as I was out last night.
-
We have some but not as many as I remembered as a child.
