Title: Trying to Quit Smoking
Post by: tuffys_daughtr on July 19, 2019, 09:53:29 am
Hey all so I got a prescription for Chantix finally and started it a couple days ago. I've heard there can be some pretty nasty side effects but so far I'm fine. I've smoked for about 45 years, all of my adult life, and I'm long overdue to know what it feels like to be a non-smoker. Just curious if anyone has had success with Chantix, or other forms of help, and if so, what side effects you may have experienced? My daughter is getting married in a week, and also I want to move to Iowa to be near my other daughter, and being a non-smoker would sure make things a lot easier, not to mention of course the health benefits, and saving money. Thanks!   :highfive:  :)

A friend of mine quit smoking by using Chantix.  She was skeptical about the side effects that she heard of.  But she did not get any of them, she felt fine and now is smoke free.   My mom quit with Nicoderm and she too is now smoke free and enjoying all the money she is saving.    Good luck to you :)

My husband tried Chantix.  He couldn't take it very long.  It really messed with his personality.  He became very hateful and mean.  He finally quit (after 51 years) by using the generic patches from Walmart.  I quit by using the Kroger generic nicotine gum.

Ah wow, thank you all for your your well wishes and suggestions and input!! Very much appreciated! Yes I had a friend who had some nasty rash appear after trying Chantix so she had to quit. But I know a couple people who just had crazy dreams and got through it and quit, however both started smoking again within 3 months :(  Yes, I know Iowa is the land of corn but I've lived there before, and the thing is, where I live now, small town, MT, there's nothing. We have not even 1 stop light, almost zero for jobs, and it's my original hometown and too many people compare me to my sister and I'm sick of it! My mom lives here and she is quite elderly, so I feel bad to consider moving away from her, but I know my sister will see to her and her hubby, who really needs to go into a home.

Good Luck, I have never been a smoker but know several people who have tried and tried to quit smoking, but seem to fall back into it. I also have some friends who have been able to quit.  It is a tough thing to do, so I hope your can do it too!

I wish you the best of luck with quitting smoking. You will be so happy to call yourself a non smoker. I did not use Chantix but i did use Nicoderm patches. I smoked for 20 years and quit 17 years ago. Its the best thing I ever did.

I have been checking out the products and because of  a few medical problems I  am afraid to  use  Chantix, although my daughter-in-law  quit on it, after the tired  time of it. Made  her sick and dizzy at first.  So am thinking about just  using the OTC. But I also have a major problem. My husband is a  smoker and  it is hard to quit around one. I  have tried twice.  So he is  going to have to try at the same time, Not  sure how that will work because  anytime something is going  wrong  he  is quite short with  people.  But we will see.

I didn't use anything to quit.  One morning I smoked the last cigarette in my pack and never bought another.  I didn't even decide to quit.  I just did.

I quit Cold Turkey on July 4, 1964 and it truly was my Independence Day. I had two younger siblings that couldn't make the grade to quitting and they both passed away many years ago now. I guess it boils down to every smoker is going to quit sooner or later, but you can choose how long you will live if you decide to do it sooner.

I quit with the help of the patch.  I had no side effects and that was in 1999.

My son just switched from smoking cigs to vaping which also has some negatives said about it but I would rather him do that that smoke a million cigs a day.  Well best of luck to you I smoked a lot for years and finally was able to quit and now I can't imagine smoking.

:o Wow awesome stories of success, thank you all! And Vicki Sue, I know what you mean, there are 2 other smokers in my household right now, but if I can move away from here, I hope it will help. Plus I'll be busier with my new life. So far I have no side effects from the Chantix, but not feeling like I'm gaining any ground either. But again, it's still early. I wish I had the will power to just stop and never pick one up again. But I'm not there yet. Thanks again everyone!   :)

Good Luck to you.  I was a smoker and it was hard quitting, but I really enjoy not having to smell like smoke and I did not like that I gained 10 pounds, but it is so worth it. Do it for your health also.  Smoking for that long your lungs are really black, but once you quit it can regain the way it is suppose to look.  Good Luck again!!

Good luck with the smoking.  45 years is a long time to try to change.  I don't know anyone who has used Chantix but it is good you don't have any side effects.  Also - I grew up in Iowa and am proud of it  ;D  The midwest people are the best!

Hi!

I smoked at least a pack a day for maybe 11-12 years and tried other methods first and never made it longer than a few weeks before relapsing.

I quit smoking using Chantix nearly twelve years ago. It was very expensive at the time and not covered by any sort of insurance. I think I smoked a few days after I started taking it and like they advertise, you just "lose" the taste/interest in it.

I did NOT have any adverse side effects. I took full dose for the first month and weaned myself off it within a few months. I have NEVER relapsed. December 1 will mark my 12 years quit.

You can do this! I think the first step is actually WANTING to quit. Also important is motivators (like moving near family) and having a support system.

(Edited to add after reading comments - I was still married when I made the decision to quit and my husband still smoked. We never smoked in the house/car, so it wasn't a big issue. We separated and divorced within a year of quitting. It can be hard if you are constantly around other smokers, but stay strong!)

If you already motivated, now you just need to find some hobby, first time will be difficult, but from day to day you will can do it,never give up,hands up,till your bone collapse

I smoked for 32 years but quit 20 years ago by using the Nicoderm patch. I really really wanted to quit. I didn't take anything by mouth like Chantix, just used the patches. But I found that running 2-3 miles per day also really helped while using the patch. Everytime I wanted to smoke, I either drank a glass of water or went out for a run to get my mind off it. Just find something you can do every time you want to smoke that would take your mind off smoking.

Did anyone mention avoiding the situations in which you formerly smoked?

If not, that's a really good suggestion.

Addiction to anything is really hard to break.  Now a days, lung cancer is not just the cause of the negative side affects.there are many other side affects that is even uglier & deadlier, I say, try small in the beginning........... say, switch to vaping, the patch, staying away from other smokers, getting rid of all smoking items around you, cutting out smoking items from you're budget, chew gum, watch really gross don't smoke commercials like the one where a woman lost her jaw due to smoking & has to use a straw to eat & use a speaking device to able to talk. Anyway, I wish you luck in your quest. If you fail, try, try, try, again.
