Title: Puppy
Post by: cateyes1 on August 15, 2019, 05:01:42 am
Our puppy was so good when she first got here last Thursday. The breeder who had her trained her well, she was going on the paper pee & poop which was GREAT !! now that she has been here a week it seems as though she is saying in her little head " these people are dummy's I can get away with anything here" so now she pees on the paper still but poops where she pleases UGH :dog:...HEEEELP, what do I do ??????????????????

Just like with a toddler trying to potty train ~ keep at it!

We have a puppy that took forever to train, then we got a kitten and it all went out the window and there was pee and poop all over the place all the time.  Now, it seems, that she is finally coming around, again, and doing better.  Just keep at it.

Personally I'm not a fan of paper training. To me, it seems like you're training them to potty INside the house instead of outside. I would take your puppy out every one to two hours and immediately after waking up, playing and eating. Then when she goes potty outside, give tons of "good potty" or "good girl" praises and treats! She is still a baby, so it will take time and patience. Puppyhood is both annoying and a blessing.  :)

I need more advice. I left the back door open for our puppy so she can go out, and she went to the back door but she still pooped in the hall way....what am I doing wrong? I cant be watching her 24/7. HELP !!

You really do have to watch puppies 24/7. LoL! They are a lot of work. You can't just leave the door open. She won't know what that means until she learns that outside is where she goes potty. You just have to keep taking her outside and wait for her to do her business. Bring her to a particular spot every time. And when she does it, give her lots of praise and a treat. Use a special treat that she LOVES, and ONLY use that treat for doing potty outside.

Some other ideas:

You can hang a bell by the door that she can reach. Every time you take her outside to potty, ring the bell. Eventually she will learn to ring the bell when she has to go out, and you should be able to hear it.

You can also tie her leash to your belt, so she has to follow you around all day. Then she can't sneak away when you're not paying attention. If she's near you, you will be able to see that she's about to go potty. Watch for sniffing, circling, squatting, whimpering. Then quickly take her outside.

If she tends to potty in the same spot in the house, it may be that she can smell where she went last time. Use an enzymatic cleanser, like Nature's Miracle, to get rid of the smell.

Do you have a crate for her? Crate training can be great for some dogs. They learn that is their safe spot, like their own little personal bedroom. And crates are helpful when you can't keep an eye on her. It should only be big enough for her to stand up, turn around and lay down. Not too small that she's uncomfortable. But not too big, or she may potty in one corner and lay down in another. And don't leave her in the crate for too long, or she will associate it as a negative place.

I know it's frustrating, but don't give up! Some dogs take longer than other to figure it out, but someday she'll get it. Dogs like schedules. Feed her at the same time every day. Potty immediately after waking up, after eating, after playing, after walking, before bed. Consistency is the key.

Be consistant! Don't give up! The puppy will learn eventually. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

We still keep a few papers down and she peed on them YAY, BUT, I fed her and waited and hr and then took her out in the yard for 20 minutes and nothing. I come into the parlor and she didn't follow me like usual. So I went out into the kitchen to see what she was up to and she pooped on the floor UGH, this just after being out for 20 and hr after she ate GRRRRRRRRRRR....and it wasnt on the paper !!...thank you all for your tips I see this is going to take awhile, I will NOT let her win LOL

I have a friend who has puppy pad trained her small dog.  I have heard you can train them to use a litter box as well.

I always crate train, they stay in the crate unless they are going outside. They usually learn pretty fast and as they get older you can let them out of the crate longer and longer inside.

It took forever, but I trained my little dogs and eventually they became house broken.  Till they got old, then started having accidents everywhere.

Puppies are so much work!

Are you planning on keeping them pad trained or eventually taking them outside?

She does both right now. Yesterday I brought her out for 20 min after an hour when she ate. She did nothing in that 20 minutes and shortly after we brought her in she pooped in the kitchen Ugh...we want her to go outside for sure. Now this morning I fed her and then brought her out and she pooped out side...it is a work in progress

I meant to mention that the other day when Sasha (puppy) went off the papers my BF stuck her nose to it . Now this morning she went out into the kitchen and was very quiet, she came back into to me with her ears down (oh oh) SO, I went into the kitchen and she pooped and peed on the papers YAY. I think sticking the nose to it had an effect, we shall see...she will also bark and go to the door so we let her out as well...we are getting there :)

I don't have pets because I am not in the mood to have to clean up after them like a child.  Nope not me.

Keep at it. A suggestion may be is to get a little bell, put a long ribbon on it and put it at the doorknob. Train it to when it needs to go poppy to nose the bell.

Thanks we may try the bell. We did see someone on YouTube do that with their dog and it seemed to have worked :)
