Too many to name. I think the choice might depend on the decade (as with 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s and beyond). You could just start with a name like, Nat King Cole when he sang "Unforgettable," and it truly was. Certainly Michael Jackson defined himself as part of the Jackson Five, but broke out on his own with unending talent singing and dancing like no other {"Billie Jean"}.
Frank Sinatra turned a corner in his singing career working with veteran big-band musician, Billy May, on a pair of albums including "Come Fly With Me" in 1958 and another couple of albums with arranger-composter, Gordon Jenkins, who used string arrangements effectively. One of his best known with Jenkins was "September of My Years" in 1965. These albums were just the precursor to the amazing music spanning 20 years in collaboration with arranger, Nelson Riddle, producing such recordings as "I've Got You Under My Skin."
